I rarely leave reviews, but my experience at Hotel Mint JFK Airport was bad enough that I feel obligated to warn others. First off, this hotel is not what it looks like in the photos. The building is old, outdated, and poorly maintained. Our room was far from clean there were cigarette butts behind the TV, and the ice bucket was scorched and full of weed residue. The so-called “renovated” space looked like it hadn’t been updated in years. We requested a room change due to the condition of the first room, and the front desk flat-out refused to move us. We had to spend the night in that unacceptable room before they finally agreed to transfer us the next day. There was zero room service, the ice machine was broken, and basic amenities were either missing or unusable. To top it all off, there is no designated parking for guests. We parked directly in front of the hotel (as many would reasonably assume is okay) and ended up with a $115 parking ticket no warning, no signage, and no help from the staff. This hotel is misleading, poorly managed, and definitely not worth the price. Don’t be fooled by the online pictures it’s nothing like what’s advertised. Spend your money elsewhere.
For local users and travelers searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" with a primary focus on proximity to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), the Hotel Mint JFK Airport in Far Rockaway, NY, positions itself as a practical consideration. Hotel Mint JFK Airport is situated in Far Rockaway, Queens, an urban neighborhood. While the hotel is marketed for its proximity to JFK Airport, it's important to note that it's not directly on airport grounds but rather a short drive away, approximately 2.8 to 3 miles. The hotel may offer a 24/7 complimentary airport shuttle service every 30 minutes, which can be a convenient option for travelers needing direct airport transfers. This makes it accessible for airport travelers via car, taxi/rideshare services, or the provided shuttle.
A significant environmental factor for guests is its location directly across from the Far Rockaway – Mott Avenue A train subway station. This provides a direct subway connection to various parts of Manhattan, offering a budget-friendly way to explore New York City for those who don't mind a longer commute (typically 30-40 minutes on public transit from JFK to the hotel, or about an hour to Manhattan). This proximity to public transport means that guests can reach destinations like Times Square, Midtown, and the Financial District by subway. However, some reviews suggest that the immediate neighborhood around the subway station and hotel can be perceived as less safe, especially at night, and some guests have reported concerns about noise from the train.
The surrounding area offers some local amenities. Within walking distance, guests might find convenience stores and fast-food options. It's also relatively close to Jamaica Bay and Gateway National Recreation Area, offering natural spaces for those seeking outdoor activities. Rockaway Beach is also within an 18-minute walk (or about 1.5 km), providing an option for beach access during warmer months. Other nearby attractions include Belmont Park Race Track and Aqueduct Racetrack, both about 10 miles away. However, the overall aesthetic of the building and its immediate surroundings are described in some reviews as being older and not always reflecting the polished look presented in online photos. It is a 73-room, two-story property that was last renovated in 2005.
The Hotel Mint JFK Airport provides a range of basic services typically expected in a budget-oriented hotel. The front desk operates 24 hours a day, providing continuous support for check-ins, check-outs, and general inquiries. Multilingual staff, reportedly fluent in English, Spanish, and Hindi, are available to assist diverse guests.
Key services include:
Customer reviews highlight a varied experience with staff responsiveness. While some guests have praised staff as "hospitable" and "very enthusiastic," others report instances of front desk staff refusing room changes despite valid concerns about room conditions, and a general lack of helpfulness regarding issues like parking.
The Hotel Mint JFK Airport offers 73 air-conditioned guestrooms, with options including Queen Rooms (approx. 28 m²), King Rooms (approx. 28 m²), and Deluxe Quadruple Rooms (approx. 33 m²). The design and condition of the rooms are a recurring theme in customer feedback, with a notable discrepancy between online photos and actual experience, with some reporting rooms as "old, outdated, and poorly maintained."
Standard in-room amenities generally include:
The hotel is listed as a non-smoking property, though reviews indicate issues with pervasive cigarette smoke odors throughout the hotel, even in non-smoking rooms. While the hotel advertises 24-hour room service and an ATM, the consistency of these services and the overall condition of facilities like the ice machine and vending machines are questionable based on customer experiences. There are no prominent recreational features like a gym or pool mentioned for this hotel, focusing primarily on providing basic lodging.
For local users filtering for "Hotels Near Of Me" with an emphasis on affordability and direct access to JFK, Hotel Mint JFK Airport might appear as a potential option. Its primary promotional appeal lies in its relatively lower price point compared to hotels directly at the airport or in more central parts of New York City.
Key points of promotional relevance include:
However, prospective guests should proceed with caution and manage their expectations very carefully, given the significant volume of negative customer reviews regarding cleanliness, room condition, noise disturbances (from train and other guests), and inconsistencies in service. Some reviews suggest that even for an overnight layover, the issues encountered might make "sleeping in the airport" a preferable alternative, despite the financial cost. Furthermore, a critical point highlighted by guests is the lack of clearly designated general guest parking, leading to unexpected parking tickets for street parking. It is imperative to confirm parking arrangements directly with the hotel. While accessible parking is noted, general guest parking may be limited to street options in a crowded residential area. The hotel appears to be aimed at travelers for whom the lowest possible price and basic proximity to the airport outweigh concerns about comfort, cleanliness, and overall guest experience.

May 20, 2025 · Bethanie ParkinI don’t tend to leave bad reviews, but man… you should probably avoid this hotel entirely. First room I checked into, you could hear a couple moaning and slapping as you walked down the hall. I requested a different floor and they obliged, but upon entering the room, there was nothing but a thin sheet on the bed. Had to request a comforter, and when the guy brought it to me, he literally handed me a blanket that was all bunched up. Still not sure if it was fully clean or not. Around 4am, someone was knocking loudly on several doors.. not sure why, but there’s no way anyone could sleep through that. I stayed here as an overnight layover and spent over $100 on Ubers back and forth to JFK and another $110 on the hotel. Might have just been better sleeping in the airport.
Apr 06, 2025 · Ian SmithI booked this hotel for my wife during a long flight layover. When she got to the hotel, they claimed to have no record of her booking (via Hotels.com) and insisted that she pay if she wanted to stay. As she was exhausted, she gave in and when she went up to the room, it was 80plus degrees and had a weird smell. To make matters worse, 2 days later she was covered with bedbug bites. She would have been better off sleeping on a bench at the airport. Avoid at all costs! Dishonest & dirty!
Mar 27, 2025 · Mike ONot a great experience. We stayed in this hotel for one night due to our flight being cancelled and this being only hotel with availability. Room was $180 and for what you get, I think it's a rip off. The hallways smelt of weed, which although legal in US (for over 21s) you don't want to be smelling as soon as you leave your room. The maintenance of the room was poor : cracks in bathroom sink, cracks in ceilings & wall, various different paints on the ceiling and charging ports not working. The area did not feel safe to me and me and the people with me. The hotel however does have good access to JFK. A bus takes you straight to JFK (for free) and then it's $8.50 for the train to your terminal.
Feb 10, 2025 · April ArthurComing from a long flight at 5 in the morning we called to make a reservation. On the website, for a room with a Queen bed, it is $89. When we called them, it’s $129 with breakfast, fees and taxes. And we asked if we can do early check in. They said that it’s a $50 fee. And the person on the phone guaranteed a parking space for customers. We got there and there was nothing but street parking. We had to drive around until we found a parking garage. When we were checking in, the guy said “I don’t know who you were talking to but it’s a $100 CASH ONLY for early check in.” We didn’t want to wait till 11am for check in, so we payed the $100. So right there and then, we payed $229 for a room that smells like smoke, has sticky floors, the roughest towels. And the breakfast that came with the reservation? NON-EXISTENT. They also didn’t mention to us that the remote for the tv needed a $10 deposit in cash (which gets returned at the end when you give it back at check out). FYI, they do have a mini fridge in the rooms but no microwave. There was also a closet by the bed, which still had make up products (probably was left by the previous guests which means it wasn’t cleaned thoroughly) and there were drawings on the lampshade. Honestly would give this zero stars if I can. Worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. Stayed there from 6am yesterday, January 17, 2025 until 7am today. Left early because of how bad it was.
