The Inn at St. John is an amazing gem in Portland. The value of a hotel like this when traveling can’t be understated. The room is spacious. The private bathroom was also a nice size and offers the privacy you’d like to have when on vacation. Cameras throughout the grounds assures you of an additional layer of security. They also have snacks, etc. available in the lobby 24/7. The only concerns would be the tight parking (arriving earlier in the day if possible will always alleviate this (not just for their hotel, so this isn’t a knock against this lodging.)) Also, be aware that the facility only has stairs, and there is also a chance that the private bathroom is not in the same hall as your room. We got lucky with 9B that our bathroom was steps away, but I didn’t see the bathrooms for the other guests, so I know they had to walk a bit further but I’m sure it’s still functionally close. Overall, look no further than this hotel when traveling !

The environment of The Inn at St John is steeped in history and character. Built in 1897, it proudly stands as one of Portland's oldest continuously operated hotels. Guests can expect a beautifully decorated Victorian-style ambiance, featuring classic and elegant decor throughout the property. This independent and locally owned inn is situated in downtown Portland's West End, a convenient location that offers easy access to the city's rich cultural scene. While it's noted that the surrounding area is close to a hospital, which means occasional ambulance sirens might be heard, guests often describe the overall atmosphere as quiet and conducive to a pleasant stay, especially if prepared with earplugs for light sleepers. The building itself is described as "old and quirky," contributing to a unique and memorable experience rather than detracting from it. The public areas, including the lobby, often feature a cozy fireplace, providing a welcoming spot for guests to relax. Security is also a consideration, with cameras reportedly throughout the grounds, adding an extra layer of assurance for guests.

The services at The Inn at St John are designed to provide a comfortable and welcoming experience. A significant highlight, frequently praised by guests, is the complimentary continental breakfast, served daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM. This breakfast is noted for its variety, often including fresh pastries, coffee, tea, and even gluten-free and dairy-free options, offering a satisfying start to the day. The Inn provides free in-room Wi-Fi, allowing guests to stay connected, and a computer station is available for those who need to work or browse. A 24-hour front desk ensures that staff are always on hand to assist with guest needs, provide local recommendations, or offer concierge services. Daily housekeeping maintains the cleanliness and comfort of the rooms. The Inn also offers complimentary self-parking on-site, a significant benefit in a city setting like Portland, though it's advised to arrive earlier in the day if possible to secure a spot due to potential tightness, especially during peak seasons. Importantly, The Inn at St John is a pet-friendly establishment, welcoming dogs upon request, though charges may apply.

The features of The Inn at St John contribute to its unique appeal and guest satisfaction. The Inn offers a variety of individually appointed room styles, catering to different preferences and budgets. Many rooms are spacious and feature comfortable beds, climate control (air conditioning and heating), flat-panel TVs with cable channels, coffee/tea makers, and eco-friendly toiletries. Some superior rooms even offer jetted bathtubs. Plush bathrobes are provided in most rooms, adding a touch of luxury. For accessibility, it's crucial to note that the facility only has stairs, with no elevator access to upper floors, which is an important consideration for guests with mobility challenges or heavy luggage. Despite this, positive reviews often highlight the comfort and cleanliness of the rooms. The historic architecture, dating back to 1897, imbues the Inn with a distinct character that appeals to those seeking an authentic and charming stay. The property also offers practical amenities such as luggage storage, a front-desk safe, and a shared microwave in common areas.

Its historic Victorian setting, combined with thoughtful services like complimentary breakfast, 24/7 lobby refreshments, and free parking, offers a compelling value. While it retains the quirks of an older building, such as the absence of an elevator and varying bathroom configurations (some private but detached, others en-suite, and some shared), these aspects are often seen as part of its unique charm by guests who appreciate its authenticity. I had a pleasant stay at this hotel. The staff were always welcoming and friendly, we had no issues parking in the lot (we did stay in the off-season though), and our room was clean and had everything we needed. The building is definitely old and quirky, but it made for a unique stay. It is close to the hospital, so you will hear ambulance sirens - if you’re a very light sleeper like me I’d just recommend coming prepared with earplugs and/or a portable sound machine (I brought both and slept fine). I’d stay here again!

We had an excellent time at the Inn at St. John. The staff was super friendly, the room was clean, comfortable and a good value, and the continental breakfast was decent (they even had gluten-free and dairy free options, which I really appreciated). Staff were all super friendly, helpful and accommodating. About a 25 minute walk to Monument Sq down Congress St, and very close to everything. Will definitely plan to stay there again, next time I'm in Portland.

Its an older hotel, so.rooms are a bit dated, but it also makes it cool. I feel like Wyatt Earp is going to walk in. The price is so good. It is clean and they take care of you. The staff is phenomenal. Very flexible and helpful. Very convenient to Maine.Medical Center. Dunkin right behind. Good Thai food a block away. Bar/Cafe next door.we did not try. Dollar Tree and Shop and Save nearby. Burundi coffee we did not get to try but looks good.

Cool looking, historical inn which had a small, but as advertised room. Arrived by bus at around 8:30-9 after an overnight layover in Boston and was given a hard time by an older man behind the desk, confused to why I would arrive at such a time. Was able to explain eventually that all I needed was to store my bags until check in time. Room smelled like cigarettes but otherwise everything else was fine and the rest of the staff were polite. Free cookies.
