Nestled amidst the majestic Shawangunk Ridge in New Paltz, New York, the Mohonk Mountain House stands as a testament to a bygone era of grand resorts, seamlessly blending Victorian charm with an unwavering commitment to nature. As a prominent listing within the "Hotels Near Of Me" platform category, Mohonk Mountain House offers an unparalleled experience for local users seeking a distinctive escape, whether for a day of adventure or an immersive overnight stay. This iconic resort, accessible at Garden Rd, New Paltz, NY 12561, USA, and reachable via phone at (855) 883-3798 or mobile at +1 855-883-3798, provides a sanctuary of peace, recreation, and renewal, all within a stunning natural landscape.
The Mohonk Mountain House is not just a hotel; it's a National Historic Landmark, a testament to a family legacy that began in 1869 with the Smiley family, who continue to own and operate it to this day. This deep-rooted history is evident in every corner, from its unique architectural amalgamation of nine adjoining buildings with various turrets and towers, spanning over an eighth of a mile, to its meticulously preserved interiors adorned with original and reproduction period pieces. Hallways serve as a living scrapbook, displaying photographs, paintings, and artifacts that tell the story of this remarkable place. Guests frequently describe it as "memorable" and "beautiful," with many noting the palpable sense of history that enriches their visit.
The environment surrounding Mohonk Mountain House is nothing short of breathtaking. Perched on the shores of the serene Mohonk Lake, the resort is enveloped by 1,325 acres of landscaped meadows and gardens, adjoining the vast Mohonk Preserve, which boasts an incredible 85 miles of hiking trails and carriage roads. The views, particularly from spots like Sky Top Tower, are consistently described as "breathtaking." This connection to nature is not just aesthetic; it’s deeply ingrained in the resort’s philosophy. The Smiley family's dedication to environmental stewardship dates back to the late 1800s, a commitment recognized globally with a United Nations Environment Programme Award in 1994.
Mohonk's environmental practices are extensive and forward-thinking. The spa, for instance, utilizes a geothermal heating and cooling system and features a "green roof" garden terrace, reducing energy use and water runoff while providing a habitat for local wildlife. Six hundred tons of Shawangunk Ridge rock excavated during the spa wing's construction were "recycled" and used to build the interior and façade. The resort also boasts numerous water filling stations to reduce single-use plastic bottles and complimentary charging stations for electric vehicles. Culinary sustainability is a priority, with a significant portion of products sourced from local farms, a robust recycling and composting program for kitchen waste, and an innovative on-site microgreen program. The Mohonk Golf Course has also received Certified Cooperative Sanctuary status from Audubon International for its environment-friendly practices.
Mohonk Mountain House is renowned for its exceptional service, with customer reviews consistently highlighting the staff's genuine concern for guest enjoyment. As one guest enthusiastically put it, "All the staff seem genuinely concerned that you should enjoy your time here." The resort operates on an all-inclusive model for overnight stays, encompassing charming accommodations, gourmet meals, and an impressive array of activities, providing a truly immersive experience.
Dining at Mohonk is a highlight, with an emphasis on elevated, farm-to-table cuisine. Meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, are served in the historic Main Dining Room, featuring cathedral ceilings and original 1893 woodwork, offering panoramic views of the Catskill Mountains. The culinary team pays "great attention to detail in the menu," with options ranging from extensive buffets to a la carte selections, often featuring ingredients from their on-site microgreen program. Afternoon tea and cookies are a beloved tradition, further adding to the resort's welcoming atmosphere.
While rooms at Mohonk deliberately forgo televisions to encourage connection with nature and loved ones, good Wi-Fi is available. The rooms themselves are described as "nice" and vary in size and features, with many offering balconies and in-room fireplaces, providing a cozy and authentic retreat. Guest services also include an ATM/Bank, babysitting/child care, and complimentary onsite parking.
