Just had wonderful family reunion here. Like the reviews state, the property is dated and major renovation starts in Sept but the rooms were clean, a little musty smelling but we were 10 feet from the water, in a beautiful shady area. What does one expect? The kids all loved it and there was so much to keep them entertained from dawn to bedtime, we rarely left the resort. All personal we were in contact with were very pleasant, professional and very helpful and accommodating. We are totally hoping to return next year after the upgrade. Mini-golf was the biggest hit after the beautiful and clean pool. Breakfast is just wicked awesome, as they say in ME.
For local users searching "Hotels Near Of Me" in the picturesque coastal region of Maine, the Ocean Gate Resort, situated at 70 Ocean Gate Rd, Southport, ME 04076, USA, stands out as a unique and evolving destination. This resort is more than just a place to stay; it's a sprawling, 33-acre waterfront property designed to offer a classic Maine camp-like experience, surrounded by natural beauty and a wide array of activities. As of late 2023, the resort began undergoing significant renovations and is expected to reopen in June 2025 as LOGE Southport, promising an enhanced "outdoor-adventure-focused experience." Its phone numbers are (207) 633-3321 and +1 207-633-3321.
The Ocean Gate Resort has historically been a beloved spot for family reunions and vacations, drawing guests with its laid-back atmosphere and extensive recreational offerings. While some past reviews indicate that the property was dated and in need of updates, the ongoing renovation signals a commitment to modernizing facilities while retaining its charm and focus on outdoor adventure. This transformation is set to elevate its appeal for those looking for a comprehensive resort experience on the Maine coast.
Environment and Ambiance: A Natural Oasis on the Maine Coast
The environment of Ocean Gate Resort is truly its most captivating feature. Nestled among majestic pines and shimmering white pines, and perched on the rocky coastline of Southport Island, the resort boasts 1,400 feet of frontage on the tranquil Sheepscot River. This creates a serene and picturesque setting with stunning ocean views, where guests can enjoy the quintessential Maine waterfront experience. The resort's layout, with its buildings spread across 33 acres, contributes to a feeling of spaciousness and connection with nature.
Southport Island itself is a quiet, charming locale, just a short drive from the bustling village of Boothbay Harbor (less than 10 minutes away). This proximity offers guests the best of both worlds: the peaceful seclusion of a resort environment, combined with easy access to Boothbay Harbor's vibrant shops, restaurants, art galleries, and maritime activities like whale watching and boat tours. The scenic winding drive under a canopy of leafy trees, past a fishing pond, sets the tone for a relaxing escape upon arrival.
The ambiance of Ocean Gate Resort, even prior to the major renovations, was one of a casual, family-friendly retreat. Guests often described it as having a "camp-like vibe," ideal for those seeking a tranquil escape in nature with plenty of activities. The new LOGE Southport branding suggests an even stronger emphasis on outdoor activities and communal spaces, likely featuring amenities like fire pits and potentially live music, fostering a vibrant, outdoor-focused community atmosphere.
Services and Features: A Hub for Outdoor Adventure and Family Fun
Ocean Gate Resort has always been known for its wide array of recreational amenities, making it a destination in itself. Even as it undergoes renovation, many of these core features are expected to be maintained or enhanced under the LOGE Southport brand. Key offerings include:
The transformation to LOGE Southport will likely bring a renewed focus on communal spaces and outdoor-centric amenities, aligning with LOGE Camps' brand philosophy of encouraging guests to "Live Outside, Go Explore." This might include enhanced fire pits, new food and beverage offerings in communal areas (like a bar and cafe), and improved facilities for outdoor gear.
Promotional Information and Future Prospects
The current promotional information for Ocean Gate Resort primarily highlights its appeal as a family-friendly, activity-rich waterfront destination in Maine. Before the renovation, it was often promoted for its value, extensive amenities, and scenic location, appealing to those seeking a classic, unpretentious Maine vacation.
With the transition to LOGE Southport, future promotional efforts will emphasize the updated facilities, modern design elements, and the enhanced outdoor adventure focus. The LOGE brand aims to provide a lot of value, expanding what's offered for the cost, and appealing to travelers who appreciate outdoor activities, community, and unique, design-forward accommodations. They target locations within a few hours' drive of major metropolitan areas, making Southport an ideal fit.
The positive sentiment from a family who "loved it and there was so much to keep them entertained from dawn to bedtime" and their hope to "return next year after the upgrade" clearly indicates the strong potential for the revitalized resort. While the negative review detailed significant issues with dated rooms, maintenance, and noise, these are precisely the areas that a $5M+ renovation (starting in September 2023 and leading to the June 2025 reopening) is designed to rectify. The property's commitment to "updated design, equipment and furniture for guest rooms" and changes to "public areas – inside and out" directly addresses past criticisms.
For local users searching "Hotels Near Of Me," the Ocean Gate Resort (soon to be LOGE Southport) offers a compelling option for a resort stay that combines the natural beauty of the Maine coast with a wealth of on-site activities. Its location provides easy access to Boothbay Harbor, and the upcoming transformation promises a refreshed and even more engaging experience for all types of travelers seeking an outdoor-focused retreat. Guests are encouraged to check the official website for the latest updates on the reopening and specific new features.

Aug 08, 2024 · Susan ThomsonWe stayed at Ocean Gate in Room 224 this past week. The roads leading in and out are full of pot holes. The tiny landing at the top of the stairs set up with 2 chairs as a makeshift patio. The room was worn and dated. The TV didn’t work, we found it unplugged and an air freshener plugged into the TV outlet. We removed the air freshener and plugged in the TV. The TV operated. We showered after traveling most of the day. The bathroom did not have an exhaust fan. So mirror was useless. The bathroom sink was clogged. The shower surround was cracked. We complained about the sink a couple times. We were told the manager had someone put in Draino to clear the drain. But that didn’t work. On top of all these problems. The walls are hollow and you can hear the conversation from the room next door clear as ever. Try to get some sleep with screaming kids next door. The pillows were tiny. They appeared to belong on a kids twin bed. You have to ask for towels and sheets. They will drop them off and you have to change your own sheets. They also will not pick up the used towels. So get used to the mildew smell in the room. The outlet would ground fault from all the moisture in the bathroom and would not reset. My wife had to do her hair in the dark corner by refrigerator (the was a mirror on the wall). We had to unplugged the AC unit and refrigerator to use a hair or curling iron. You’re probably better off camping than staying at Ocean Gate Resort.
Aug 20, 2024 · Vito KeburisWe read great reviews and booked a room. Then on the way, read some awful reviews and were worried. We got our dates mixed up and were a day earlier than what we reserved but the kind staff were able to find us a nice room in building 13. The room was spacious and just steps from the dock. How awesome - there were canoes, double and single kayaks, stand up paddle boards, life jackets, ping pong, and corn hole. I believe there are bikes for guests' use. Also a pool. Breakfast was nice and you can eat outside or inside. We had a nice little balcony. Canoeing and kayaking is so great, with the pretty rocks and woods, islands, ospreys, ducks, cormorants, and seals. We got to watch lobstermen checking their traps. I really wish we had been able to stay longer than just one night!
Jul 15, 2024 · Out Hiking!Website is deceiving as the rooms look nicer than they actually are. We arrived late booked via chase travel and no one was working and no key in the mailbox. We called and quickly received our key. Got to our room and the screen door fell off on the way in. No switch for the outdoor light, room smelled extremely musty, spiders, sink barely drained, no soap in the dispenses, mold in bathroom ceiling. The grounds were nice and scenic, but the rooms were not. The renovations and status of the rooms should be clear on their website, or they should expect more poor reviews and unhappy guests. I think they are justifying the high price for the amenities of the place (kayaks, small pool, mini golf, etc). Breakfast was not anything too appealing. It is a nice location and I am sure it was great and it may be worth the cost after the renovations?
Aug 27, 2024 · Adam BrownYes, the place might be on the older side, but the rooms are quite nice and roomy. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. Not like some other places that are nicer. The staff was very friendly and anything you needed you got. Breakfast was very good and a lot of food. Over the Fall and through the winter the whole place is getting a complete reno. Hopefully the prices won't go up to much. Give it a try, don't let resort through you off.
