Don't confuse Old World Charm with Old and in need of repair. The drawers in our room would not open and close with ease. The mattress did not fit the bed as there was a gap at the top where the pillows would fall in the crack as there was no headboard. Only 1 chair in the room with 2 guests and the mirror above the fireplace was not useful as you could not use it to see anything. The only towel rack in the bath was over the toilet where the 2 towels provided were hung and not reachable from the small shower. A towel rack near the shower and sink would have been helpful. Breakfast was basic and the exact same every day of our stay which was 4 days. Most of the staff were not friendly. When they would enter a room in the morning, they didn't even say good morning. Not once did anyone ask if we had everything we needed. I never saw the host. After sightseeing around town, there were so many other nice places to stay but the website was attractive. Don't be fooled by pretty pictures.

Environment and Location: Stepping into Historic Newport

The Yankee Peddler Inn is deeply rooted in Newport's history, originally built in the 1830s for a Boston mariner and naval officer. This early Victorian home, along with its adjacent ivy-covered carriage house, offers guests a sense of stepping back in time. The inn is nestled within Newport's peaceful "Historic Hill" neighborhood, an area renowned for its architectural and cultural richness. This prime location is arguably the Inn's strongest asset, placing guests within easy walking distance of a multitude of iconic Newport sights.

Its situation on Touro Street means guests are just a few blocks from the waterfront, Thames Street, and Bellevue Avenue. This allows for convenient exploration of:

  • Touro Synagogue: The oldest synagogue in America and a National Historic Site, practically at the Inn's doorstep.
  • Thames Street & Waterfront: Home to a bustling array of shops, boutiques, art galleries, and diverse dining options, all within a short stroll. Bowen's Wharf and Bannister's Wharf, popular for harbor activities and seafood, are also easily accessible.
  • Newport Mansions: Many of the famous Gilded Age mansions, such as The Breakers, The Elms, and Marble House, along with the scenic Cliff Walk, are within a few minutes' drive or a longer, pleasant walk.
  • International Tennis Hall of Fame: Also within comfortable walking distance, appealing to sports enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
  • Trinity Church and Queen Anne Square: Architectural gems and central landmarks featured in films, located just a few blocks away.

While the building's historical nature means some elements might reflect its age, its location provides an authentic Newport experience, offering an oasis of calm while being incredibly central. The inn also features a rooftop deck, which offers a pleasant outdoor space for guests to relax and enjoy the ambiance of the historic surroundings. There is also a garden area for guests to unwind.

Services and Amenities: Essentials for a Historic Stay

The Yankee Peddler Inn aims to provide comfortable, casual charm with essential amenities for its guests. The inn offers 19 guestrooms, including standard rooms, superior rooms, and a Carriage House, each with a private bath. The rooms are described as having a Victorian style with antique-style furnishings.

Standard in-room amenities typically include:

  • Private Bathrooms: Each room comes with a private bathroom, generally equipped with a shower (some may have small stand-up showers) and complimentary toiletries, along with a hair dryer and towels.
  • Climate Control: Air conditioning is available in rooms for guest comfort.
  • Entertainment: Flat-screen TVs with cable channels are provided for entertainment.
  • Connectivity: Complimentary in-room Wi-Fi ensures guests can stay connected.
  • Conveniences: Free bottled water, iron/ironing boards, and free cribs/infant beds are available. Some superior rooms may offer mini-refrigerators.

Beyond the individual rooms, the Inn provides several common services:

  • Complimentary Continental Breakfast: A key amenity, offered daily. Based on guest reviews, the breakfast is described as "basic" but "decent," typically including boiled eggs, yogurt, danishes, breads, oatmeal, milk, juice, coffee, and fruit. While some guests find the selection consistent, it provides a convenient start to the day. The breakfast room is located in the basement of the inn.
  • Free On-Site Parking: A highly valuable amenity in downtown Newport, where parking can be scarce and expensive. The parking area is located behind the inn on Mary Street. While some guests note that parking can be tight, the availability of free parking is a significant advantage. The policy states one car per reservation.
  • Rooftop Deck: A popular feature for guests to relax and enjoy views.
  • 24-Hour Front Desk: Ensuring assistance is available around the clock.
  • Luggage Storage: Convenient for guests arriving early or departing late.
  • Free Newspapers in Lobby: A small touch for guests to stay updated.
  • Tour/Ticket Assistance: Staff are available to help guests plan their local activities.
  • Afternoon Cookies and Tea: Some sources indicate that freshly baked cookies and assorted teas are offered in the afternoon, along with a complimentary wine hour on Friday evenings.

It is important to note that the Inn does not have an elevator, as it is a historic property with multiple floors. Guests with mobility concerns or heavy luggage should be aware of this. Housekeeping is provided daily.

Features: Historic Charm with Practical Advantages

The Yankee Peddler Inn's defining features are deeply tied to its historical identity and its strategic location:

  • Historic Charm: The Inn's 1830s Victorian architecture, with its period furnishings and original details, provides a unique, "old-world charm" that appeals to travelers seeking an authentic Newport experience beyond a modern chain hotel. The building itself is a part of Newport's heritage, having been built for a Boston mariner.
  • Exceptional Location: Its spot on Touro Street, in the Historic Hill neighborhood, offers unparalleled walking access to Newport's key attractions, including the waterfront, shops, restaurants, and historical sites. This is a significant advantage in a city known for its pedestrian-friendly downtown. Many attractions are within a 5-15 minute walk.
  • Complimentary Amenities: The inclusion of free continental breakfast and free on-site parking adds considerable value, especially given Newport's typically higher prices for these services. Free Wi-Fi is also a standard offering, working well throughout the property.
  • Variety of Accommodations: With different room types, including a two-bedroom suite and the Carriage House, the Inn can cater to various traveler needs, from solo travelers to families. The Carriage House rooms are noted for being more spacious and having more natural light.
  • Pet-Friendly Policy (Though not explicitly in given reviews, online information suggests otherwise): While the provided customer reviews do not mention a pet policy, general information about the Yankee Peddler Inn from other sources indicates that it is not a pet-friendly hotel. Guests should confirm directly with the Inn if traveling with pets, as policies can change.
Promotional Information and Guest Impressions: Location is Key, but Expect a Historic Feel

The Yankee Peddler Inn promotes itself as an "oasis of calm, comfortable, casual charm" in an "ideal in-town location." They highlight the free parking, free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and the rooftop deck. They also emphasize their proximity to Touro Synagogue and their welcoming of Jewish Sabbath observant guests with classic room keys and proximity to kosher options for breakfast.

Customer reviews, while appreciating the historical aspect, also provide a balanced view. The location consistently receives top marks, described as "Excellent Location," "perfect location," "centrally located," and "walking distance to everything." The free parking is also a highly valued amenity, despite some notes about it being tight. Guests appreciate the convenience of the free shuttle bus stopping outside, providing easy access around town.

However, some reviews indicate that "Old World Charm" can sometimes be confused with "Old and in need of repair." Specific feedback includes:

  • Room Condition: Some guests reported issues with drawers not opening/closing easily, mattresses not fitting beds properly (leading to gaps where pillows fall), lack of headboards, limited seating (only one chair for two guests), and less-than-ideal mirror placement above the fireplace. The Carriage House rooms were also mentioned as being noisy due to traffic and passersby, with issues like bugs, non-working radiator knobs for heat adjustment, uncomfortable mattresses, and dirty carpets. The decor in some rooms is described as dated, with old tube TVs and boring artwork, and a lack of natural light.
  • Bathroom Functionality: Specific comments included the only towel rack being inconveniently placed over the toilet and not reachable from the small shower. Some bathrooms are described as small or cramped with tiny stand-up showers.
  • Breakfast Consistency: While free, the breakfast is often described as "basic" and "the exact same every day," which some guests found repetitive over longer stays. The breakfast area itself, being in the basement, is described as dark.
  • Staff Friendliness: A notable concern for some guests was the perceived unfriendliness or lack of engagement from certain staff members, with comments like "Most of the staff were not friendly" and "Not once did anyone ask if we had everything we needed."

Despite these criticisms, many guests acknowledge the Inn's unique character and unbeatable location. Phrases like "Old and charming, clean and comfortable," "Quaint, close to everything," and "The history of it" are used to describe its appeal. While the Inn may not offer the polished modern amenities of newer hotels, its historic character and prime spot in downtown Newport make it a consideration for travelers prioritizing location and a traditional inn experience. Guests often conclude that while there might be minor issues, the location and the value it offers in expensive Newport still make it a worthwhile stay for those who can overlook some dated aspects for a truly historic setting. The overall sentiment often leans towards a good value for money given its prime location, especially with the complimentary parking and breakfast.

We stayed in the Carriage house and it was extremely noisy. People walking at night by the house were loud and all the traffic noise could be heard. The house was not well maintained. There were bugs in the room and the radiator knobs were not working to adjust the heat even though we were told we could adjust them. The mattress was not comfortable and the carpet looked very dirty. We also were not happy with the breakfast as it was the same each day- boiled eggs, yogurt, danishes, breads, oatmeal, milk, juice, coffee and fruit. The only part we were happy with was the location. This was definitely not worth it for the price.

I stayed here for one night. Most of the staff were very friendly. Location was very convenient, a quick walk to lots of restaurants/ shops. The rooms were well maintained, but do have some quirks since it's an older building. For example, the rooms are not very soundproof, so you could hear noise from outside and there wasn't really anywhere to put anything in the bathroom. An empty shelf or cart would have helped a lot. Decent continental breakfast and appreciated that parking was included. I personally wasn't bothered that some had to double park and leave their keys with the staff.

AMAZING. If we return to Newport, I hope we can get a room here again. Very old-school house, so don't expect serious tech amenities, but they definitely do their best. It is charming, the rooms are decorated beautifully, the roof deck is amazing- really worth a stay. The only complaint I have is the lack of ventilation in the bathroom- a steamy shower can be a problem when there isn't a vent or window that opens. If TV is a big deal to you, maybe ask for a room with a larger one. We didn't use the one in our room but it might have been a challenge to view from the bed if we had. Breakfast was lovely- continental, but better than the usual chain version. Service was great. Location was amazing.

Super accommodating, very friendly and helpful staff. Stayed in ground floor, 2 room suite. For those Jewish Sabbath observant: close proximity to Touro Synagogue and walkable sights, kosher options for breakfast, classic room keys for Shabbos.
