I worked with Barncastle as the photographer for an intimate wedding they held there. The staff was so incredibly helpful and kind to both me, the couple getting married, and their guests. They created an amazing full weekend experience for the couple and their guests. I absolutely loved working with Barncastle and I can't wait to photograph there more!

Barncastle Hotel + Restaurant Introduce

In the "Hotels Near Of Me" category, we are thrilled to introduce Barncastle Hotel + Restaurant, a truly unique and highly acclaimed establishment located at 125 South St, Blue Hill, ME 04614, USA. This historic boutique inn and restaurant, easily reachable at (207) 374-2300 or +1 207-374-2300, stands as a beacon of culinary excellence and gracious hospitality in the heart of coastal Maine. Guests consistently laud Barncastle for its stunning venue, exceptional food, and staff that are "beyond helpful and kind," making it a top choice for special occasions, intimate weddings, and memorable dining experiences.

Barncastle, also historically known as Kline Cottage, is more than just a hotel and restaurant; it's a piece of Blue Hill's rich history. Built in 1884 to a design by acclaimed Boston architect George Asa Clough, it was one of the earliest and grandest summer cottages in the area. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it masterfully blends its Shingle Style architecture and original features with modern comforts, offering an experience that is both elegant and inviting. The current owners, Lizzie Szczepaniak and Owen Royce-Nagel, who bring backgrounds as a sommelier and chef respectively, have enhanced its reputation, making it a year-round destination.

Environment: Architectural Drama and Historic Charm in a Coastal Town

The environment of Barncastle Hotel + Restaurant is defined by its dramatic architecture and historic allure. As an 1880s boutique inn, it exudes a timeless charm with its distinctive Shingle Style design. The building itself is a landmark, featuring idiosyncratic elements like a central staircase that rises in stages to an interior window and balcony, and a modest bellcast-topped turret. This architectural grandeur creates a unique and captivating atmosphere for guests.

Situated at 125 South Street in Blue Hill, the hotel is nestled in a serene part of this charming coastal town. Blue Hill is known for its artistic community, scenic beauty, and tranquil pace of life. While the hotel does not boast direct ocean views, it offers a peaceful setting surrounded by gardens and greenery, providing a sense of seclusion and relaxation. The outdoor patio dining area, for instance, allows guests to enjoy the fresh Maine air in an elegant setting. The interior, particularly the dining room and pub, features a cozy wood-paneled ambiance, often enhanced by a working fireplace, creating an intimate and inviting space. Despite its historic nature, the property is thoughtfully maintained, offering a blend of rustic decor and elevated dining experiences.

The location in Blue Hill places guests within easy reach of the town's galleries, shops, and the vibrant local community, while also serving as a convenient base for exploring the wider Blue Hill Peninsula and attractions further afield, including Acadia National Park (approximately 24 miles away).

Suites 2 and 5, and Turret Room 3, also include microwaves and pull-out sofas, making them suitable for families or those needing extra space. Rates generally include a continental breakfast.

  • Award-Winning Restaurant: The on-site restaurant is a major draw, consistently hailed as one of the best in Maine. Open Wednesday-Sunday evenings, it specializes in scratch cooking with a wood-fired oven, utilizing locally-grown and organically-raised ingredients. The menu is known for being "fantastic," "incredible, unusual, and well thought out," with dishes intended to be shared. It caters to diverse palates with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, along with innovative mains like roast chicken and schnitzel. The service in the restaurant is also consistently described as "fantastic" and "attentive."

  • Intimate Pub & Beverage Program: The on-site pub provides a cozy setting for drinks. The beverage program is curated with a focus on natural and biodynamic wines (primarily from France, Germany, and Austria), classic cocktails, and a rotating selection of craft Maine beers on tap. This offers a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere for mingling.

  • Event Hosting & Coordination: Barncastle is a highly sought-after venue for intimate weddings and other special events. The staff, including dedicated coordinators, are "beyond helpful in every aspect," guiding couples through planning and ensuring a "full weekend experience" for guests. This comprehensive service includes food, drinks, and attentive serving staff. The "Barn" area is particularly suitable for events.

  • Guest Comforts: Beyond the rooms, the hotel provides amenities such as a garden, a fireplace in the lobby, luggage storage, a library, and coffee/tea in a common area. This is the best restaurant in Maine. The menu is always fantastic. Service is always fantastic. I wouldn't go anywhere else for a special occasion.

Stayed overnight at this lovely inn, but the highlight was dinner. What a wonderful meal! Started off with a unique Japanese custard-like dish - cannot remember the name of it, but it was uniquely flavorful. Then had an equivalent of a flat bread pizza that was equally tasty. Worth a visit for dinner whether or not you stay there.

Stayed at Barncastle in August with my wife and our boys who are both under 7. We were in room 2, which I would highly recommend if traveling with kids. It was great for them to have their own area to sleep. The room was quiet even on the nights when the restaurant and bar were open. In general the room was comfortable, classic, and more than met our needs. There is also a library stocked with board games, books, and local pamphlets. The board games turned out to be more of a hit than we thought. There were some old ones that were fun to learn and have our kids play. The grounds of the inn are also a highlight. Lots of lovely plants and a large open field that was perfect for kicking a soccer ball around. One of the biggest highlights for us was the restaurant and bar. Not only was the food great, but I love a place where you can ask for any type of drink (wine/beer/cocktail) suggestion and you end up with the perfect drink. They even made great mocktails for our boys. We ordered a bunch of things from the menu, with a few modifications for our kids, and everything came out delicious. Service was wonderful, both in the dining room and when I grabbed drinks for us later at the bar. There is a lot to do in Blue Hill if you're looking to spend time outside. There are a number of hikes in the area good for kids, and there is also a large playground a few minutes away next to a lovely water view. I could probably go on more about this place, but the biggest takeaway is that my family had a wonderful time and we can't wait to go back. Lizzie, one of the owners, is an absolute gem and did everything from help us find hikes to help us find the perfect wine. Perhaps one of the easier five star reviews I've written.

Our stay was fantastic! This was our second time staying here, and the quaint atmosphere paired with amazing customer service always makes our stay comfortable. An added bonus is the delicious food, and the restaurant staff is so friendly, going above and beyond to make you feel welcome. The owner always makes us feel like family and goes the extra mile to make our stay memorable. Thanks again! Cheers until next time.
