Historic Tapoco Lodge Resort is a true mountain treasure. Nestled along the river and surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Smoky Mountains, this place is both charming and unforgettable. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the history and care that’s gone into preserving this incredible lodge and its welcoming atmosphere. We dined on the outdoor patio by the river and the experience was phenomenal. The food was creative, fresh, and packed with flavor. The blackened fish with hummus salad was light yet filling, the burger with mushrooms and onions was juicy and rich, and the BBQ-loaded fries with pulled pork, cheese, and green onions were indulgent in the best way. Everything was beautifully presented and came out hot and delicious. Even the sides, like the cheesy hash brown casserole, were crave-worthy. The service was warm and attentive, and the setting made everything feel like a little mountain escape. You’re surrounded by the sounds of the rushing river and the cool breeze, all while enjoying fantastic food and drinks. This is a must-visit if you’re in the area. Whether you’re stopping in for a meal, a drink by the river, or planning a stay at the lodge, Tapoco delivers on all fronts. I can’t wait to come back!

More than just a place to stay, Tapoco Lodge is a cherished mountain treasure, steeped in history and surrounded by the awe-inspiring beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cheoah River. Guests consistently rave about its charming atmosphere, exceptional dining, and the opportunity to truly disconnect and unwind in a serene natural setting.

The environment of Historic Tapoco Lodge Resort is, without a doubt, one of its most compelling attributes. Nestled on 120 acres within the lush Nantahala National Forest, the resort is bordered by the cascading Cheoah River, creating an incredibly peaceful and picturesque backdrop. Guests can expect to be surrounded by the soothing sounds of the rushing river and enjoy cool mountain breezes, especially when dining on the outdoor patio overlooking the water. The lodge's historic architecture, dating back to 1930, exudes a timeless charm, allowing visitors to feel a strong connection to the past while enjoying modern comforts. The property itself is a sanctuary of natural beauty, offering private hiking trails (nearly a dozen of them, including one that runs along the river), lush greenspaces with Adirondack chairs overlooking the river, and a hammock cove for ultimate relaxation. This immersive natural setting encourages guests to "unplug" and truly be present. Furthermore, the lodge's unique location at the end of US 129, famously known as the "Tail of the Dragon" with its 318 curves in 11 miles, makes it a favored destination for motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts, adding an element of thrilling adventure to the serene environment. Whether it's the vibrant colors of spring, the lushness of summer, or the breathtaking autumn foliage, the natural beauty around Tapoco Lodge promises an unforgettable experience in any season.

The services at Historic Tapoco Lodge Resort are designed to offer a comprehensive and attentive guest experience, blending rustic charm with refined hospitality. Guests consistently praise the "warm and attentive" service, with staff members like Libby, Melissa, and Destiny being singled out for their pleasant, friendly, and helpful demeanor. This focus on personalized service contributes significantly to the welcoming atmosphere.

  • Dining Excellence: The resort offers two on-site dining options. The Cheoah Dining Room serves a "delightfully scrumptious breakfast" with fresh, locally-inspired ingredients, including a complimentary coffee bar. The Tapoco Tavern, perched directly above the Cheoah River, is a lively gathering spot that offers "creative, fresh, and packed with flavor" lunch and dinner options, ranging from blackened fish with hummus salad, juicy burgers, and indulgent BBQ-loaded fries, all "beautifully presented and came out hot and delicious." The Tavern also features a full bar.

However, it's worth noting that lodge rooms typically do not have TVs, and Wi-Fi connectivity can sometimes be intermittent due to the remote mountain location, reinforcing the theme of disconnecting.

  • Nightly Bonfires: A beloved feature, nightly bonfires with available s'mores kits create memorable evenings under the stars.

The features of Historic Tapoco Lodge Resort highlight its unique blend of history, comfort, and outdoor adventure. The resort offers various accommodation types to suit different preferences:

  • Lodge Rooms & Suites: Located in the historic main building, these rooms are elegantly rustic with locally sourced wood, often featuring king beds and some with private patios. Due to the historic nature, children under 12 are generally not permitted in lodge rooms.
  • Cabin Rooms: These separate cabins provide a more private and spacious experience, often with breathtaking views of the Cheoah River or surrounding mountains. Many cabins are pet-friendly, catering to guests traveling with their furry companions. For example, some cabin rooms feature king beds, full private baths, and river or mountain views.
  • Offsite Properties: For larger groups or those seeking more seclusion, some offsite properties are available, offering additional space and amenities like fire pits, and convenient access to rafting and hiking.
  • Recreational Amenities: Beyond hiking trails, the property features a hot tub/whirlpool, a hammock cove, tennis courts (with equipment), a games room, and shared lounge areas with books and board games.
  • Dining Venues: The Tapoco Tavern, with its dual-level outdoor patio overlooking the river, offers a unique dining ambiance. The Cheoah Dining Room provides a cozy setting for breakfast.
  • Historic Elements: The lodge proudly preserves its history, featuring original elements like old metal P.O. boxes and former Texaco gas pumps, contributing to its "charming and unforgettable" character. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The entire property is designed to provide "adventure and sanctuary," ensuring guests have ample opportunities for both active pursuits and peaceful relaxation.

My husband & I stayed 4 nights at Tapoco Lodge (March 13-16) for his birthday. We are from Murphy NC but wanted a quiet, relaxing place to unwind and we found it!! We stayed in a cabin. It was perfect & the porch overlooked the Cheoah River. The sound of the river was so peaceful, just what we wanted. The cabin was spotlessly clean which I loved and the bed and pillows were so comfortable!! All the staff were so pleasant, friendly and helpful!! Libby, Melissa, Destiny, several workers in the Tavern that I don’t remember their name. We would give our stay 4 out of 5 stars!!

An incredible place to eat, stay, and relax. Lovely staff, Great food (dinner and breakfast), excellent beer, and exceptionally comfortable rooms. Plus, I was able to plug my car into one of four charging stations located in a charming setting.

Stopped in for lunch after seeing the advertisements at the end of Tail of the Dragon. The dry rub wings were excellent. The homemade potato chips were cooked perfectly crunchy. Couldn't ask for a much better view while sitting next to the creek.

We stopped through here for a late breakfast on our way to explore the Fontana Dam area. Our server was a really nice guy who checked on us regularly. I had the Dragon's Nest and my wife had french toast which had pecans on it, which made it extra tasty.
