The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful — we loved the historic vibe and the location overlooking Gay Street. The space and layout of our room were great, and the views were a highlight. However, there were some major drawbacks to our experience. As longtime Bonvoy members, we had requested an early check-in, which was declined due to a full turnover (understandable). We were assured the room would be ready by the standard check-in time, but it still wasn’t available even an hour later. They explained they were short-staffed, with only one person handling all the rooms — still frustrating after a long travel day. Once we got to the room, the issues continued. The bed was very worn, with large dips on each side that made it uncomfortable to sleep. We also found hair on the bed at arrival, and the TV had major sound issues — volume had to be cranked up to 80 just to hear it. At one point, we were grateful for the loud TV to help drown out the very audible sounds of a neighboring guest’s “good time” through the thin walls. She was at least enjoying the bed. Valet, well, a bit disappointed here. I had left something in my car and stated I needed To grab it. The valet comes out with the keys and her phone giving me directions to the parking lot a half mile away. On a personal note, I walk with a limp due to nerve damage in my right leg, but that didn’t seem to faze her. She handed me my keys and sent me on my way to find my car. For $38 a day, go get the car! Overall, while the potential is absolutely there — the hotel is charming and in a great location — the maintenance, staffing, and room conditions really need attention. We decided not to stay for our second night. With some improvements, Hotel Cleo could truly be an amazing place.

Hotel Cleo, Knoxville Downtown, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel Introduce

Hotel Cleo, Knoxville Downtown, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, offers a distinctive and historically-rich lodging experience in the heart of Knoxville, Tennessee. Situated at 428 S Gay St, Knoxville, TN 37902, USA, this boutique hotel is a captivating option within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category, appealing to travelers who seek a unique blend of historical charm, thoughtful design, and a vibrant urban setting. As part of Marriott's Tribute Portfolio, it aims to provide independent hotel experiences with the backing of a global loyalty program.

For direct inquiries or to make a reservation, the hotel can be reached by phone at (865) 390-2536 or via mobile at +1 865-390-2536. These contact details are available for guests to obtain information, make bookings, or address any specific needs during their stay.

Environment: Historic Charm Amidst Downtown Buzz

Hotel Cleo's environment is defined by its prime location on Gay Street, one of Knoxville's most iconic and lively thoroughfares. This central position provides guests with immediate access to a bustling downtown scene. The hotel itself is housed in a building with significant historical appeal, which guests find contributes to its "beautiful" and "historic vibe." Its setting "overlooking Gay Street" offers dynamic views of the city's activity.

The hotel's proximity to Market Square is a major draw. Just steps away, Market Square is a vibrant hub of restaurants, bars, independent shops, and hosts numerous events and farmers markets throughout the year. This walkability allows guests to immerse themselves in Knoxville's urban culture effortlessly. Other key downtown attractions such as the Tennessee Theatre, the East Tennessee History Center, and the Knoxville Convention Center are also within easy walking distance. While the hotel's location is ideal for experiencing the city's pulse, it also comes with the caveat of noise, particularly from Gay Street on weekend nights, which some guests have likened to "staying above a frat house." There's also mention of "noise from other rooms," suggesting that sound insulation might be an issue.

Despite potential noise concerns, the hotel's interior design is highly praised. "The space and layout of our room were great, and the views were a highlight." The overall aesthetic is described as "thoughtfully designed," with "everything flow together beautifully," from the lobby to the rooms, elevators, and staircase. This commitment to visual appeal and ambiance contributes significantly to the hotel's unique character.

Services: Boutique Offerings with Room for Improvement

Hotel Cleo aims to provide personalized services typical of a boutique hotel, leveraging its affiliation with Marriott. While guests appreciate the potential, some recent reviews highlight inconsistencies. The front desk staff's demeanor has been described as "not overly welcoming upon entering," though efforts were made to resolve issues like room discrepancies. The hotel's reliance on a limited staff, with "only one person handling all the rooms" for turnover, led to delays in check-in, which was frustrating for guests after long travel days.

Valet parking is offered, but a customer's experience revealed a significant shortfall in this service. Despite paying "$38 a day," a guest with a limp was given directions to retrieve their car from a parking lot half a mile away instead of the valet bringing the vehicle. This indicates a notable disconnect in service delivery, especially given the premium cost.

For dining and beverages, Hotel Cleo is typically associated with upscale offerings. Guests often have access to Oliver Royale, a renowned restaurant, and Peter Kern Library, a popular speakeasy bar. However, one review noted an "unhappy bartender" and a "big cardboard box sitting on the bar," diminishing the experience. Complimentary Wi-Fi is generally available throughout the hotel, and while not explicitly stated, common boutique hotel services like concierge assistance and a 24-hour front desk are usually expected.

A concerning issue raised by a long-term Marriott Bonvoy member was a room mix-up, where a King, City View room reservation was given to an Ambassador member, leaving the original guest with a Queen room. While an attempt was made to rectify this, the subsequent room was noisy, and the promised follow-up from management never occurred. This highlights a need for better communication, adherence to bookings, and responsiveness to guest complaints, especially for elite loyalty members.

Features: Unique Design and Essential Comforts

Hotel Cleo offers a limited number of unique and beautifully designed rooms, often ranging from 16 to 20 keys, emphasizing an exclusive feel. The rooms are praised for their "great space and layout" and "views." However, a significant drawback noted by guests is the condition of some in-room amenities. A "very worn bed, with large dips on each side" made sleeping uncomfortable, and issues like "hair on the bed at arrival" and a TV with "major sound issues" (requiring volume at 80 just to be audible) point to maintenance and cleanliness concerns. The "visibly dusty/dirty" bedframe further underscores these points. The thin walls are also a notable feature, leading to "very audible sounds of a neighboring guest's 'good time.'"

Despite these specific issues, the inherent design of the rooms aims for an elevated experience. Guests can expect unique decor that complements the hotel's historic charm. While specific amenities like a fitness center or pool are not detailed in the provided reviews, boutique hotels of this caliber typically offer at least a fitness facility. The hotel's connection to the broader amenities of Peter Kern Library and Oliver Royale provides in-house dining and entertainment options.

The hotel is also pet-friendly, welcoming canine companions with a $100 pet fee per reservation. They even offer a 'Pet Package' with amenities tailored for pups, including dog bowls, waste bags, and blankets for the room, making it a convenient option for pet owners.

Promotional Information: Marriott Bonvoy and Boutique Allure

As a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Hotel Cleo participates in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. This allows members to earn and redeem points for stays, and potentially receive benefits like upgrades or late checkout, depending on their elite status. However, the reviews suggest that elite member recognition, particularly for Ambassador status, might be managed differently in a small boutique setting, potentially leading to disappointment if expectations of upgrades are not met, or if standard room types are prioritized for higher-tier members, bumping others.

The primary promotional appeal of Hotel Cleo lies in its unique "historic vibe," "beautiful" design, and "great location." These aspects often attract travelers seeking a non-chain, character-filled experience in downtown Knoxville. The presence of well-regarded dining establishments like Oliver Royale and the speakeasy Peter Kern Library also serves as a significant draw, often featured in promotional materials to highlight the hotel's comprehensive lifestyle offerings.

While specific package deals are not detailed in the provided information, boutique hotels like Cleo may offer curated experiences, such as romance packages, culinary packages, or special event rates. Guests interested in a stay at Hotel Cleo should check the Marriott website, specifically for this Tribute Portfolio property, or contact the hotel directly to inquire about the latest offers and to ensure they receive the best possible rate for their desired dates. The hotel's strong reputation for its "historic appeal," "great location," and "exceptional service" further serve as compelling reasons for guests to choose Hotel Cleo for a memorable and refined stay in downtown Knoxville. However, the hotel appears to be undergoing a period where improvements in consistency of service, room maintenance, and addressing noise concerns are crucial for fully delivering on its luxury boutique promise and satisfying loyal guests. The decision by one guest to "not stay for our second night" and another to move to a different hotel after one night underscores the importance of these operational improvements for future guest satisfaction and reputation.

I'm sorry to say this was one of the most unpleasant hotel experiences I've had in a while.  We reserved a King, City View room.  We checked in and went to our room only to discover it was a Queen.  I went back downstairs and the gentleman at the front desk said "sorry but the room you booked is not available; I should have told you".  He went on to explain that a Marriott Ambassador bumped me out of it.  Bear in mind, this is a 16-room boutique hotel, not a typical 300-room Marriott.  Allowing Ambassador bumping in such a small place is simply wrong. I returned to my room and 5 minutes later the front desk called and said he "felt bad about my situation" and was moving me to a King room reserved by someone who hadn't checked in yet.  Unfortunately the new room overlooked Gay Street, which was incredibly noisy on a Friday night.  It was like staying above a frat house.  The next morning I raised my concerns with the front desk and she said "most of our regulars know better than to book a room facing Gay Street".  Street noise wasn't the only problem.  There was also noise from other rooms.  This is simply a noisy hotel. We left after one night and moved to the Embassy Suites across the street, and it was great. The first gentleman at the front desk assured me his manager would follow up with me about the situation, but they never did.  Really inexcusable.  This is why I'm writing the review. I should add that I've had Marriott Elite status since the 90s.  I've been loyal to this hotel chain for many years.  It's not the Marriott I used to know and love.

Sadly, as charming as the hotel is, it was spoiled by the unprofessional and poorly trained staff. The man at the reception desk was flippant and rude. The next morning, we came down at 7:30 to have breakfast and was told to have a seat and someone would be right with us. 5-10 minutes later my husband went back to the reception desk to ask when a waiter might be helping us, the same person tells us “oh, I don’t think they open until 8.” She then recommends a restaurant directly across the street “to the left”. We walked for 3 blocks, couldn’t find it. Passed the Embassy Suites hotel and asked someone inside. They told us it was in the opposite direction. VERY sketchy neighborhood. 8:00 AM and no one out and about. The only positives of the Cleo were the room; quite well appointed and lovely. And the young valet the morning we left…he was delightful. But we will never return to this hotel. Unfortunate.

I had an incredible stay at Hotel Cleo, a charming French-inspired boutique hotel that exceeded my expectations. The room was cozy and inviting, with a beautifully designed bed and stunning glass doors that added an elegant touch. The staff went above and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed, offering friendly and hands-on service throughout my visit. The location couldn’t be better—right on Gay Street, making it easy to explore the area and enjoy everything the city has to offer. If you’re looking for a unique and comfortable stay with exceptional service, I highly recommend Hotel Cleo!

Upon arrival staff sitting down and preoccupied with their phones. You would expect top-notch service at the price I had to pay not staff that looks like they rolled out of bed and came to work. The room was nice but the bathroom had an awful sewer smell. No privacy due to the fact you can hear everything happening in the room next to you or in the hall. Will not be staying here again in the future
