Location, Location, location This is a very old hotel that has never been closed for remodeling. The rooms are stark, small and often noisy, but clean and supply everything you need for a great visit. We walked everywhere, including museums, tours, and restaurants. The staff was a high point because they were friendly and tried to accommodate any need that they could. Don't be afraid to ask! It's definitely a trade-off; a reasonable price and a great location but not a particularly nice room.
For those of us living in the District of Columbia or looking for a truly authentic D.C. experience for visiting friends and family, Hotel Harrington offers a unique glimpse into the city's rich past. This venerable establishment is not just a place to sleep; it's a piece of Washington's history, having welcomed guests for over a century. While it may not boast the sleek, modern aesthetics of newer hotels, its enduring charm and, most importantly, its unbeatable location, make it a compelling choice for exploring the nation's capital.
Hotel Harrington has been a fixture in downtown D.C. since 1914, and its long operational history is part of its allure. It’s known for its classic, no-frills approach to hospitality, prioritizing practicality and affordability in a city where accommodation can often be quite expensive. Guests often describe the rooms as "stark," "small," and echoing the hotel's age, but consistently praise them for being "clean" and providing "everything you need for a great visit." This honest trade-off – a reasonable price for a simple room in a fantastic location – is a key aspect of its appeal.
A consistent highlight mentioned by visitors is the staff. Reviews frequently commend the team for being "friendly" and always striving to "accommodate any need that they could." This personalized, accommodating service can make a significant difference in a guest's experience, turning a basic stay into a truly pleasant one. The hotel embraces its historical identity, and while it may not have undergone extensive modern renovations, it provides a functional and well-maintained base for exploring the city.
For locals, whether you’re planning a staycation to delve deeper into D.C.'s offerings without the daily commute, or need a central and cost-effective option for visiting relatives, Hotel Harrington presents an intriguing alternative to more conventional hotels. Its historical character, combined with its prime location, allows for an immersion into the city that is both convenient and memorable.
The location of Hotel Harrington is arguably its most significant asset, truly living up to the adage, "Location, Location, Location." Situated at 436 11th St NW, Washington, DC 20004, USA, the hotel places guests directly in the vibrant heart of downtown Washington D.C.
Its prime positioning means that many of D.C.'s most iconic landmarks and attractions are within comfortable walking distance. Guests can easily stroll to the White House (approximately 4-5 blocks away), the National Mall, and a myriad of Smithsonian museums, including the National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Ford's Theatre, the National Archives, and CityCenterDC are also just a short walk away. This unparalleled accessibility significantly enhances the visitor experience, minimizing travel time and maximizing exploration.
For public transportation, the Hotel Harrington is incredibly convenient. The Metro Center Metro Station is just a short stroll (around 260 meters to 1 block) from the hotel, providing direct access to Washington D.C.'s extensive subway system. This makes navigating the city effortless, connecting guests to other neighborhoods, attractions further afield, and major transportation hubs. Union Station, a key rail hub, is also approximately 1 mile away.
For those arriving by air, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is the closest major airport, approximately 3 miles away. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) are further out but still accessible by various transportation options. While the hotel offers on-site parking (with an additional charge, and height restrictions for vehicles in the garage), its central location and proximity to public transport mean that a car is often unnecessary for sightseeing, a definite plus for navigating D.C.'s sometimes challenging traffic and parking.

Oct 21, 2023 · Linda WagnerOld hotel and quite historical. They need to renovate the rooms. The location is great
Jan 12, 2025 · Silvia FrutosLove the location because it’s centrally located downtown and landmarks. Oldest hotel in DC so it’s expected to not be the best place you’ll stay due to needing upgrades. Rooms were super quiet & quaint at least the area of the hall we stayed in. Harry’s is a fun “dive” bar that’s connected to the hotel. It’s open til 3am on weekends and Bartender Linda will have you in stitches. Front desk overall was Fantastic! We found them polite, resourceful and personable. Checked in our room at 930am (instead of 4pm) which was Major convenient! Con- Our room was super arid so maybe have bottled water next to you. Beds were comfy (hard) which we prefer. If you do a Moonlight tour I Highly suggest Sam & Sal’s Moonlight tour(brochure in the gift shop)! It’s more personalized, more site to get out and take pictures, George was hilarious and personable, $59 for 3hrs! Can’t beat that for what you get! Overall we loved our stay at the Harrington and would easily go back there when we do!
Apr 10, 2023 · thedon dawsonWe have prepared before staying at this hotel, and maybe because we have no expectations at all , we can kinda accept the old room. Only soap are offered in the room, but with such great location and price, we have nothing to complain about. They offer to keep your luggage after you check out, which is what we need.
Oct 09, 2023 · Liane LiouThis hotel is exactly average. The rooms are not the nicest rooms ever. The furniture and carpet is stained. Very dated. Not the most comfortable bed in the world. This is balanced by the lower price compared to other hotels in the area and the fantastic location if your goal is to tour attractions. If you just need a place to lay your head at night this is the place. They have restaurants in the bottom for breakfast lunch and dinner but we didn’t get a chance to try them. The staff is friendly and the sheets and towels were fresh daily. We never heard our neighbors unless someone was being loud in the hall. My biggest complaints are when we arrived there was a sign to call the front desk if we needed to adjust the AC. We called and they said it was not on for that room due to the (average) temp outside. They did provide us with a fan for our stay. In the room we would also periodically get whiffs of sewage. I think they had a plumbing problem in our room but it wasn’t unbearable and it wasn’t all the time. And lastly, the restaurant in the bottom has a patio and it stayed open pretty late and it was easy to hear the people on the patio from our room so if you like an early bed time you may want to request being on an upper floor if possible. All in all would I stay here again? Probably, just for the location and price alone. Public transit it pretty good, so if you wanted to stay a little further out it’s totally doable but we really liked everything being in walking distance.
