We are owners of a Wyndam Timeshare and I am embarrassed that this property has the gall to have the Wyndam name. We requested a queen size bed and we maybe got a reduced sized queen bed, it was barely big enough for the two of us. The mattress was like trying to sleep on a board and the pillow was hard too! We could not pass each other in the room due to the small space it was in. We asked for an upgrade as owners of Wyndam and were told it was 35.00 per night more. This place was not worth even close to what we paid. The breakfast was non-existant. NEVER AGAIN!!!
For travelers exploring Hershey, Pennsylvania, and specifically seeking a budget-friendly accommodation within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category, the Howard Johnson by Wyndham Hershey presents itself as an option. Located at 845 E Chocolate Ave, Hershey, PA 17033, USA, this hotel is part of the Wyndham family of brands, aiming to provide essential lodging services to its guests. It is important to approach this property with realistic expectations, as feedback from previous guests indicates a varying experience, often aligning with its economy-tier positioning.
The Howard Johnson by Wyndham Hershey, like many budget-oriented hotels, focuses on providing basic comfort without extensive frills. The property has 77 rooms spread across 2 stories, indicating a more traditional motel-style layout. Reviewers have noted that room sizes can be a concern, with some describing them as "small space" where it's difficult to "pass each other in the room." The furnishings and general upkeep of the rooms have also drawn mixed comments, with some guests expressing disappointment with the "small" nature of queen beds and the comfort level of mattresses and pillows, describing a mattress as "like trying to sleep on a board" and a pillow as "hard." Temperature control in rooms has also been cited as an issue, where it was "either way to hot or way to cold."
The hotel does feature an outdoor pool, which can be a pleasant amenity during warmer months for guests to relax and cool off. However, the condition of the pool or its operating hours are not specified in the provided reviews. The property's exterior and common areas typically reflect its budget category, focusing on functionality over luxury. Guests should anticipate a no-frills environment, designed for short stays where the primary need is a place to sleep.
A notable environmental factor, though not mentioned in the provided reviews, is the hotel's location on East Chocolate Avenue, which is a busy thoroughfare. This could contribute to external noise, which may be a concern for light sleepers, especially given a review noting "hearing everything outside."
The services offered at Howard Johnson by Wyndham Hershey align with its economy brand. The hotel typically provides a 24-hour front desk, catering to varied check-in times. However, the level of helpfulness from the front desk staff has been a point of contention in some reviews, with one guest stating the "front desk was not helpful" regarding a non-functional TV. This suggests that while staff may be available, the resolution of issues might not always meet guest expectations.
Regarding breakfast, the provided reviews indicate a significant area of disappointment. One guest explicitly stated that "the breakfast was non-existant," while another commented, "If your diabetic the breakfast will not be for you!" This strongly suggests that if a complimentary breakfast is offered, it is extremely basic, minimal, or perhaps inconsistent in its offerings, potentially not meeting the expectations of a typical hotel breakfast. Travelers relying on a substantial breakfast should consider alternative arrangements.
The hotel is pet-friendly, allowing guests to travel with their animals, which is a notable convenience for pet owners (it is advisable to confirm any specific pet policies or fees directly with the hotel via phone). Other standard amenities might include free Wi-Fi, though its reliability or speed is not commented upon in the provided reviews. Parking is typically free, which is a common amenity for hotels in this category.
The primary promotional aspect of the Howard Johnson by Wyndham Hershey is its affordability and location in Hershey. For travelers prioritizing a lower price point and proximity to Hershey's attractions, it can be a consideration. The hotel is located conveniently on East Chocolate Avenue, offering relatively easy access to Hersheypark and other popular destinations in Hershey. The contact numbers are (717) 533-9157 and +1 717-533-9157 for direct inquiries and reservations.
However, the value proposition is heavily weighed by the guest experience. Several reviews indicate that the perceived value does not align with the price paid, with a Wyndham Timeshare owner expressing "embarrassed that this property has the gall to have the Wyndam name" and stating, "This place was not worth even close to what we paid." Another guest, despite past stays, mentioned they would "stay again but only if I got a nicer room that things work better in," highlighting inconsistency in room quality and functionality.
For guests considering this hotel under the "Hotels Near Of Me" category, it's crucial to understand that it operates as a basic, no-frills establishment. While it may offer a low entry price, guests should manage their expectations regarding room comfort, amenities, and service levels, particularly regarding breakfast and responsive front desk assistance. It is best suited for those looking for a very economical option for a short stay, where the primary objective is to have a bed to sleep in near Hershey's attractions, and who are willing to overlook potential shortcomings in room quality and auxiliary services. It is recommended for guests to call the hotel directly to confirm specific room types, amenities, and current service offerings before booking.

May 08, 2025 · Theresa RockwellWas disappointed as I've been here before to meet up with friends come back and just sleep but the room was small so it was either way to hot or way to cold and the TV didn't work and the front desk was not helpful. This kept me up so night hearing everything outside as I usually sleep to ambient sound from the TV and getting up to adjust the heat...I would stay again but only if I got a nicer room that things work better in
Feb 09, 2025 · Michael MFirst, I've never stayed at a Howard Johnson so maybe my expectations just weren't low enough. However, for the price ($130/per night) I was greatly disappointed. Front staff was nice. However, breakfast wasn't served until 0700. Thankfully, there was a wonderful "Dessert, etc" across the street that was open. So getting the kid to get Softball games fed, was possible. But my BIGGEST complaint is how DIRTY everything is! EVERY touch surface was grime & dirt! From the lobby, to doors, and don't even get me started on the crap in the rooms. And when I say crap, I mean literal crap on the walls in the bathroom. Mirrors hadn't been wiped down, nor lamps. Was too afraid to look under the bed. There was mold in the shower and the fan. It was just gross. I've never stayed in a motel 8,or 6, or whatever they're called, but for $80/ night, this is what I'd expect. Let's just say... Howard's are a no go for us going forward. I'd rather pay $80 and tell myself I'm camping!
Oct 22, 2024 · E GoedelExtremely dirty. Staff is unprofessional. Manager is extremely rude (Denny/Danny) he refused to give his exact name. Duct tape on doors instead of repairing them. The pictures online DO NOT reflect the actual place. The pictures are edited. The price of the room makes absolutely no sense because you'd be better off at a motel 6 or in a tent. Their rooms smell like mold and mildew. So does the front lobby. It smells strongly of mildew and urine. And that's where they keep the breakfast. The restaurant is in the same building so I can only imagine the lack of cleanliness. I see why business is failing. I would not eat or stay here if you care about your health. FYI I am not usually picky about where I stay & this is the second review I’ve ever posted. So that should tell you something.
Aug 27, 2024 · Heather BryantFor the price and location you can't beat this. Our room was clean the beds were comfortable but the pillows were small. Small outside pool. There was a restaurant/bar downstairs didn't get to visit but it looked nice. Excellent location very close to everything. The staff was nice. Perfect for a place to lay your head especially if you don't plan on being I'm your room much.
