The bed itself was comfortable and clean. The room and bathroom were both quite run down. The air conditioner worked, but you definitely want the constant fan on to help drop out the sound of aircraft coming overhead regularly. The front desk people live behind bulletproof glass, and I heard two different arguments that customers had with them. I get the impression some people try to live in this place and barely can afford it by those conversations. The location I give 1 star because NOTHING is within walking distance of this place. I spend $60 in delivery to get food and stuff I'd normally have just gone to the pharmacy for quickly. Also the aircraft going overhead all the time will wake all but the heaviest of sleepers.

The hotel can be contacted at (973) 536-0482 or via mobile at +1 973-536-0482. As part of the Wyndham family of brands, it typically caters to travelers seeking convenient and often budget-friendly options near major transportation hubs. This introduction will provide an objective overview of the hotel, covering its environment, services, features, and any relevant promotional information, drawing from various online sources and a diverse set of customer reviews.
The Howard Johnson by Wyndham Newark Airport is situated on Frontage Road, placing it directly within the immediate vicinity of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This location is its most defining environmental characteristic and primary appeal for many guests. It is exceptionally close to the airport, often cited as being within a 10-minute drive, and less than 1.5 to 2 miles from the airport terminals. This extreme proximity means that guests will experience consistent and prominent aircraft noise, which is a frequently mentioned point in reviews. While the hotel offers soundproof windows in some rooms, the constant hum or roar of overhead planes can be a significant factor for light sleepers, with guests often recommending keeping the air conditioner fan on for white noise. The hotel is located in a business or industrial district, and reviews consistently note that "nothing is within walking distance." This means there are no readily accessible restaurants, pharmacies, or convenience stores for guests who prefer to walk. This isolation necessitates reliance on the hotel's on-site amenities, delivery services, or transportation. For those looking to explore beyond the airport, major attractions like Prudential Center and Sports Illustrated Stadium are within a 5-minute drive, and New York City is about 10 miles away, accessible via shuttle or other transportation options. The physical appearance of the hotel and its surroundings, as described by some guests, can be "run down" or "shabby," with dimly lit hallways and older decor, which contributes to the overall impression of the immediate environment.
The services offered by the Howard Johnson by Wyndham Newark Airport are largely tailored to its role as an airport hotel. A key service, and a consistent positive highlight for many guests, is the complimentary 24-hour airport shuttle service to and from EWR. This service is frequently praised for its efficiency and convenience, being a primary reason many travelers choose this hotel for layovers or early morning/late-night flights. The hotel operates a 24-hour front desk, providing round-the-clock assistance for check-in (from 3:00 PM) and check-out (by 12:00 PM). However, customer interactions with front desk staff receive mixed reviews; while some praise them as "amazing, helpful and kind," others describe staff as being behind "bulletproof glass" and note hearing arguments, suggesting potential security concerns or a challenging work environment for staff. The hotel features an on-site restaurant, Ambrosia Cafe, which serves American cuisine for lunch, dinner, and sometimes brunch. Room service is also available during limited hours. While some guests have had positive dining experiences, others report communication issues with restaurant staff. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in all rooms and public areas, though some sources mention a "1-device limit" for free in-room Wi-Fi. The hotel also offers express check-in and check-out, a business center with a computer station, and a gift shop/newsstand. Laundry service and daily housekeeping are provided. Multilingual staff are on hand to offer assistance, catering to an international clientele. The hotel is noted for implementing heightened sanitation protocols, including daily cleaning and increased availability of sanitization products, and offers a doctor/nurse on call for added safety.
The Howard Johnson by Wyndham Newark Airport has 162 well-appointed rooms, spread across three floors. The rooms are equipped with amenities designed for a comfortable, albeit often brief, stay. Each room typically includes a Tempur-Pedic bed (in some rooms), ensuring a comfortable sleeping experience, which is frequently praised in reviews for being "comfortable and clean." Other in-room features include air conditioning, flat-screen televisions with satellite programming, microwaves, refrigerators, coffee/tea makers, and private bathrooms with shower/tub combinations and complimentary toiletries. Ironing facilities and hairdryers are also standard. The hotel offers various room types, including king and double bed rooms, as well as studio suites. Connecting rooms are available upon request. While some reviews praise the cleanliness of the rooms and the spaciousness, a significant number of guests report issues with the general condition of the rooms and bathrooms, describing them as "run down," "dirty," "shabby," or not matching online pictures. Concerns about dust, stains (including what appeared to be blood), and pests (like cockroaches and spiders, and even a dead mouse) are recurrent in highly negative reviews, indicating inconsistencies in maintenance and pest control. The hotel has a fitness center, although some reviews suggest the equipment might be old or barely functional. Soundproofed rooms are mentioned, which is a crucial feature given the airport proximity. Other property features include vending machines for snacks and drinks, free self-parking on-site (though some sources mention a daily fee, and extended parking may incur a surcharge), and wheelchair accessibility. Despite some negative comments, the basic amenities for an overnight stay are generally present.
The primary promotional appeal of the Howard Johnson by Wyndham Newark Airport lies in its direct proximity to EWR and its complimentary airport shuttle service. For travelers on a budget or those with early morning flights and late-night arrivals, the convenience of the shuttle and location is a significant draw. The hotel leverages its affiliation with the Wyndham brand, likely participating in the Wyndham Rewards loyalty program, which offers members benefits such as discounted rates and points for stays. While not explicitly detailed in the provided information, hotels of this type often offer "park and fly" packages, combining a stay with extended parking. Reviews indicate that the hotel can be a "cheap room" option, particularly in off-peak months like December and September, with Tuesday and Monday nights potentially offering the best deals. Its presence on major booking platforms like Booking.com, Expedia, Kayak, and Momondo, allows it to reach a wide audience searching for "Hotels Near Of Me." The hotel also highlights its proximity to New York City attractions, positioning itself as a cost-effective base for exploring the metropolitan area, although guests should be aware of the need for transportation for such excursions. Despite some significant negative feedback regarding cleanliness and property condition in certain reviews, the hotel continues to be a viable option for travelers prioritizing airport convenience and value over luxury, with positive mentions for its shuttle service and some staff interactions.

May 04, 2025 · Kevin BerryMy husband and I went to this location just today and found many issues with the room when entering in. We can with my mother and 2 siblings and one had a bad allergy to dust and we had ask that it would not be and the room was filled with dust bunnies and it seems to look like that the sheets weren’t clean. The bathroom was dirty. Half of the counter space was dirty as well. And most of the room didn’t look like the pictures provided to the me and my mother when looking on Booking.com. As well as us finding many bugs and critters inside of their room as well. My Husband found a few bugs and many of them being a cockroach and one may have been a spider that could send you to the hospital. When we were about to leave we saw that there were not only a dead mouse but we found a stain on the bed that looked like blood. Hope they change their ways in the future but we will be contacting this business for a full refund.
Mar 28, 2025 · Brian WalkerThis hotel is a DUMP! The rooms are not kept up well and there is major black dust on the A/C vent. I heard a smoke detector next door and had to ask for another room. They stay behind bullet proof glass. But the worst part of the trip was the loud party music played from 1-3 am, so I didn't sleep well at all. Thankfully I survived and my car was not broke into. Also the stairwell smelled like urine...rooms are disgusting...just a horrible experience.
Mar 10, 2025 · Brad ClareLocation outside is poorly lit. No signs indicating where the "hotel" is located. The staff makes you feel like you are being judge by their looks. The cleanliness is this location is horrible. A/C vents have stuck on dust. They're sticky. The walls look like they have stuck on grease on the base boards. The walls look like they were trying to scrape the paint off. Bathroom is very out dated, cracked tub and the smell of mold intensifies once you put the shower on. This location should be name MOTEL not HOTEL. And is way over priced.
Dec 27, 2024 · LisetteThis place does not resemble the pictures at all. It is filthy and utterly disgusting. Howard Johnson should not be allowed to use misleading images of clean rooms in their advertisements. There is grime on the walls and in the showers, and the bed feels like it was pulled from a junkyard. I don't understand how they can even call this a bed. The toilet seat is barely hanging on, and I found pubic hairs and spiders in the shower, leaving me unsure whether showering would make me clean or expose me to serious health risks. Although the room was designated as nonsmoking, the entire place felt like a smoking dump. This is a health code violation, and they should be held accountable for false advertising.
