Independence Inn is nestled in a rural area of Strafford, New Hampshire, offering a peaceful and picturesque environment. The inn itself is an older building, dating back to 1832, which contributes significantly to its unique character and charm. While acknowledging the "challenges of such" an older building, guests appreciate that the management is "responsive and forward-looking with good customer service," ensuring a well-maintained and enjoyable stay.
The location, though described by some as "not being near well populated areas," is precisely what appeals to others seeking tranquility and a connection to nature. It provides an "ideal home base for exploring the southeast quadrant of New Hampshire." The inn is notably "near the beach," with Bow Lake just 0.2 miles (0.3 km) away, offering easy access to water activities and scenic views. The property includes a charming garden, picnic area, firepit, and outdoor furniture, inviting guests to relax and enjoy the serene surroundings. There's also a walkway leading to the water, emphasizing its connection to the nearby lake.
Despite its rural setting, the inn is strategically located to offer a balance between seclusion and accessibility. Within a 30-45 minute drive, guests can reach various attractions including the beautiful Atlantic coastline beaches, the vibrant shops and restaurants of Portsmouth and Dover, Lake Winnipesaukee for summer cruises, Gunstock Mountain for winter skiing, and the state capital in Concord. Local activities such as hiking/biking trails, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and horse riding are also available nearby, ensuring there's plenty to do for outdoor enthusiasts.
Independence Inn focuses on providing a comfortable, home-like experience, particularly suited for longer stays or larger groups. The inn features "six cozy, renovated colonial-era rooms," including one two-room suite. Each room is individually decorated and furnished, offering a unique charm. Key amenities in the rooms typically include a private bath, comfortable bedding (with premium bedding and down comforters), a mini-fridge, and a coffee maker.
A significant service offering is the availability of a "shared kitchenette right across the hall with snacks" and a microwave, toaster oven, and electric kettle. This allows guests to prepare simple meals and snacks, providing flexibility and potentially reducing dining costs. Complimentary continental breakfast is served daily from 4:00 AM to noon, ensuring guests start their day refreshed. While one review noted bananas being "a bit too ripe," the provision of snacks and a shared kitchenette is a highly valued amenity, especially for those in larger suites or staying longer.
A notable feature of the Independence Inn is its self-service check-in policy. As one reviewer mentioned, "self service check in was a good set up." This provides guests with convenience and flexibility, regardless of their arrival time. While this might mean less direct interaction with staff (as one guest didn't "see any employees"), reviews still praise the "good customer service" and responsiveness of the management, implying a well-organized and supportive system behind the scenes. Housekeeping is available upon request.
The inn is also pet-friendly, with "Luxury Room - Pet Friendly" as an explicit room type, making it a suitable option for travelers with furry companions, though it's always advisable to confirm specific pet policies and any associated fees when booking.
One of the standout features of Independence Inn is its capacity to accommodate larger families or groups, particularly highlighted by the "penthouse suite." This "very large loft area with plenty of beds" is described as a "full apartment" offering ample space and privacy, which is a rare find in many traditional inns. Another guest praised "room #4" for its "king sized bed," "clean and comfortable" feel, and the "propane fireplace" that kept them "warm and cozy." This suggests a variety of well-appointed room types, catering to different needs and preferences.
The inn maintains shared common areas, including the space that was "formerly occupied by our restaurant." While the restaurant operation may have closed due to the rural location, these common areas are still "open for the use of our guests," providing additional spaces for relaxation or gathering. This adaptability of the space also points to its potential for hosting events. Guests have expressed hope to "attend more events there going forward," indicating its suitability for private gatherings, workshops, or small celebrations.
Connectivity is provided through complimentary wireless internet access in public areas and rooms, and smart speakers are available for entertainment. Each room also includes a separate sitting area, adding to the comfort and functionality of the space.
The historic nature of the building itself is a feature, offering a unique ambiance that cannot be replicated by newer constructions. It provides a glimpse into New England's past while offering modern conveniences.

Get directionsI enjoyed their penthouse suite, a very large loft area with plenty of beds to accommodate a large family or group. A full apartment and the inn has tons of amenities. I heard the restaurant closed, sad but expectable due to the location not being near well populated areas. It is nice and I hope to attend more events there going forward. It is an older building with all the challenges of such but they seem responsive and forward looking with good customer service.
Nov 27, 2024 · Sedgefield StratfordWe enjoyed our room #4 in this quaint old home! It was better than their presidential suite room #5! The king sized bed was clean and comfortable. The propane fireplace kept us warm and cozy! We loved the idea of a small kitchenette right across the hall with snacks, although the bananas were a bit too ripe for our taste. We wish bottled water had been supplied. We didn’t see any employees, therefore we could not attest to service, but self service check in was a good set up.
Dec 17, 2023 · Sandra FortierIt’s from Gilmore girls ! I love Gilmore girls ! But shouldn’t it be closed when in season 4 Sookie and Lorelai bought their own inn . Independence inn , Michel speaking
Jan 04, 2025 · Eliška PittrováThey just began serving brunch- on Easter. Their work flows weren't quite in place and we waited a long time for pancakes and eggs and each of us had something amiss with our order. The girl was young and had never served during this meal time before and there were new systems in place due to the new meal seating they had just started. Love the barrel chairs though. And the hostess/ Supervisor was attentive in checking in on us
Apr 16, 2024 · Kristy HillsgroveWe loved our stay at the Independence Inn! It was just what we were looking for during our autumn trip to New England. The character of the old Inn was warm, quaint, and inviting. We stayed in room 2 and found the king bed very comfortable and loved the fireplace. We wish our stay could have been longer. This is a great place to stay if you want to feel like you had a small town, old-timey New England experience on your travels. And the price was right and the food at Heartwood was delicious. We would definitely come back here!
