Writing this review years later but I absolutely loved this hotel! I was lucky enough to stay here my first trip to New Orleans with a best friend of mine. The room was adorable & the windows opened for fresh air throughout. It was chilly so we called room service who gave us extra blankets in lightning speed (plus they were warm!) The hotel is haunted (I say this because I saw a ghost!) so if you like that kind of stuff this hotel is perfect for you- & me! Happy Haunts! This hotel closed down for a while (about 6 years I think) & every time I went to visit Nola again I’d look to stay here but they were closed. I’m so excited they’ve opened back up! St. Helene Introduce

Hello, fellow Louisianans! When planning a trip to our magical Crescent City, New Orleans, you often seek a place that offers more than just a bed; you want an experience that truly embodies the city's unique spirit. If you're drawn to historic charm, a prime French Quarter location, and perhaps a dash of the supernatural, then St. Helene might just be the perfect spot for your next adventure. This boutique hotel, nestled on a historic street, offers a distinct character that sets it apart from more conventional accommodations.

New Orleans is a city steeped in history, mystery, and vibrant culture. Whether you're exploring its iconic architecture, soaking in the jazz melodies, or indulging in its world-renowned cuisine, having a base that feels authentically "NOLA" can make your trip unforgettable. St. Helene, with its charming rooms and central location, aims to provide just that. While it has recently reopened after a period of closure, it's quickly regaining its reputation as a beloved choice for those seeking an intimate and memorable stay. Let's delve into what makes St. Helene a noteworthy option for your next New Orleans visit, from its prime location to its unique features – including, as some guests suggest, a few friendly spirits!

St. Helene is wonderfully situated at 508 Chartres St, New Orleans, LA 70130, USA. This address places it directly in the heart of the iconic French Quarter, arguably the most sought-after location for visitors to New Orleans. For us locals, this means you are immediately immersed in the historic charm, vibrant atmosphere, and legendary attractions that make this neighborhood so famous.

The hotel's location offers exceptional accessibility to a myriad of popular landmarks and experiences:

  • Bourbon Street: As noted by guests, the hotel is just "two blocks away" from the legendary Bourbon Street. This allows for incredibly easy access to its lively music clubs, bars, and entertainment, while still offering enough distance for a slightly quieter retreat when desired.
  • Jackson Square & St. Louis Cathedral: You are mere steps away from the iconic Jackson Square, with its majestic St. Louis Cathedral, street performers, and local artists. It’s a perfect spot for morning strolls and soaking in the Quarter's artistic vibe.
  • Mississippi River: The mighty Mississippi Riverfront, including popular attractions like the Shops at Jax Brewery and steamboat docks, is within a short walking distance, offering scenic views and recreational opportunities.
  • Café Du Monde: Indulging in a classic New Orleans experience with beignets and café au lait at the famous Cafe Du Monde is just a brief stroll away.
  • Art Galleries & Shopping: Chartres Street itself, and the surrounding blocks, are home to countless antique shops, art galleries, and unique boutiques, perfect for leisurely exploration and finding that special souvenir.

For those traveling from other parts of Louisiana, navigating to the French Quarter is straightforward. While parking directly in the Quarter can be limited, the hotel's central location means most attractions are walkable, reducing the need for a car once you've arrived. Public transportation options like streetcars and buses are also accessible nearby, connecting you to other districts of New Orleans. The hotel's prime spot ensures you are truly at the epicenter of all the action and charm the French Quarter has to offer, making it an excellent base for exploring the city on foot.

St. Helene offers a range of services aimed at providing a comfortable and uniquely New Orleans experience for its guests.

  • Room Service (for amenities): One guest praised the "lightning speed" of room service when they "called room service who gave us extra blankets...plus they were warm!" This indicates a responsive and helpful staff willing to provide comforts.
  • Responsive Staff Assistance: While not a full-service hotel in the traditional sense, the quick response for extra blankets suggests that the staff is attentive to guest needs and readily available to assist.
  • Outdoor Pool Access: The hotel features an "outdoor pool," often nestled within a charming courtyard. This provides a refreshing amenity, particularly welcome during New Orleans' warm weather, offering a place to relax and cool down.
  • Secure Access: Some information indicates the property utilizes a secure entry system, possibly with codes or mobile keys, for guest access and peace of mind.
  • Complimentary WiFi: Modern travelers can expect complimentary wireless internet access, allowing them to stay connected during their stay.
  • Self Check-in (Implied by some current operations): While one review notes an older experience with front desk staff, some newer information suggests a self-check-in process (e.g., "access will be through a private entrance" with "check-in instructions"). This points to a streamlined and independent arrival.
  • Air Conditioning & Heating: Rooms are equipped with air conditioning and heating, ensuring comfort regardless of the New Orleans weather.
  • Coffee/Tea Maker in Room: A convenient amenity for guests to enjoy a hot beverage at their leisure.

It's important to note that while one review mentions "customer service gives ZERO cares about your stay once they get that money," this contrasts with the positive experience of the first reviewer regarding room service responsiveness. Given the shift to a potential "Roami" (apartment-style) operation, the service model might emphasize independence with support available remotely or by limited on-site staff.

St. Helene is brimming with features and highlights that contribute to its distinctive charm and appeal, particularly for those seeking an authentic and memorable New Orleans experience.

  • "Adorable" Rooms with Fresh Air Access: Guests have raved about the rooms being "adorable," with the added bonus that "the windows opened for fresh air throughout." This allows guests to truly experience the ambiance of the French Quarter.
  • Charming Courtyard with Outdoor Pool: The hotel boasts a lovely "charming courtyard" with an "outdoor pool." These courtyards are a quintessential feature of French Quarter architecture, providing a serene oasis amidst the city's bustle, perfect for relaxation.
  • Historic French Quarter Ambiance: The hotel is described as having "beautifully updated rooms that preserve the building's timeless character," reflecting a blend of "historic elegance and modern comfort." This commitment to maintaining the original character adds significantly to the authenticity of the stay.
  • Proximity to Key Attractions: Its location makes it "just a 5-minute walk from Bourbon Street and Mississippi River," providing unparalleled access to the French Quarter's most famous landmarks, dining, and entertainment.
  • The "Haunted" Element: For those who love a thrill, one reviewer excitedly notes, "The hotel is haunted (I say this because I saw a ghost!)." If you're a fan of the supernatural, this unique and intriguing aspect could be a major draw, adding a layer of mystery to your stay.
  • Cleanliness and Nice Decor: Despite some other concerns, the rooms are generally described as "clean" and having "nice decor," indicating attention to presentation and basic comfort.
  • Mobile Key / Secure Access: Information suggests a secure entry system, potentially with mobile keys, offering convenience and peace of mind for guests accessing their rooms.

However, it is crucial to highlight a significant concern from one review: the severe lack of soundproofing in balcony rooms. This reviewer explicitly states, "Do not stay in a room with a balcony. Unless you drink in excess, blackout and can sleep through anything. Don’t get a balcony room." They detail hearing "trucks driving by picking up trash and recycling" and "Cars honk at all hours of the night for unknown reasons," leading to "some of the worst sleep I’ve ever had." This is a critical point for potential guests, especially light sleepers, and indicates that while the location is prime, certain room types may come with considerable noise challenges. The "sticky floors" in bedrooms were also noted as a "disgusting" detail, suggesting inconsistent cleanliness in some areas.

While specific, named "Promotions or Special Offers" are not directly provided in the customer reviews for St. Helene, properties like this, especially those operating under a model like "Roami at St. Helene" (which appears to be its current operational name based on search results), often have dynamic pricing and may offer deals through online travel agencies or their direct booking platform. For locals in Louisiana looking to experience this unique French Quarter stay, it's highly recommended to check current availability and pricing directly.

Common types of promotions you might encounter for boutique or apartment-style hotels in New Orleans include:

  • Advance Purchase Rates: Discounts for booking your stay well in advance.
  • Seasonal Discounts: Offers tied to specific times of the year, although in a city with year-round events like New Orleans, peak season pricing can be a factor.
  • Extended Stay Deals: Reduced rates for booking multiple nights, which could be appealing given the apartment-like setup of some rooms.
  • Direct Booking Incentives: Sometimes, booking directly through their official website (or the Roami platform) can unlock exclusive rates or perks compared to third-party booking sites.
  • Last-Minute Deals: If there's availability, you might find discounted rates for spontaneous trips.
  • Membership Discounts: While not a major chain, if Roami has a loyalty program or partners with any discount programs, these could be worth exploring.

Given the specific issues highlighted in some reviews (e.g., soundproofing), it might be worthwhile to call the hotel directly to inquire about specific room types if a quiet stay is a priority. This would also be the best way to ask about any current promotions not widely advertised. You can reach them using the contact information provided below.

For reservations, inquiries, or to learn more about the distinctive St. Helene (also referred to as Roami at St. Helene), you can reach them through the following contact information:

  • Address: 508 Chartres St, New Orleans, LA 70130, USA
  • Phone: (504) 302-2517
  • Mobile Phone: +1 504-302-2517

The hotel's location on Chartres Street in the French Quarter makes it easy to find via any standard GPS or mapping application. While the nature of the "front desk" may vary (some sources suggest a virtual or limited presence for Roami properties), these phone numbers should connect you to their support team for booking assistance, questions about specific room features, or to inquire about any current promotions.

For us locals here in Louisiana, St. Helene offers a unique and distinctly New Orleans experience for those seeking a French Quarter getaway, especially for visitors who appreciate historic charm and aren't afraid of a little character (or potential spectral activity!). Its suitability for locals hinges on understanding its particular strengths and being mindful of some reported quirks.

Firstly, the unbeatable French Quarter location is a significant draw. Being on Chartres Street means you are literally in the heart of all the action – steps away from Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, the Mississippi River, and countless incredible restaurants, bars, and shops. For Louisianans looking to immerse themselves fully in the quintessential New Orleans experience, this immediate accessibility to the city's vibrant core is invaluable. You can walk everywhere, soak in the atmosphere, and truly feel like you're living the Quarter life for a few days.

Secondly, for those who love a bit of history and the unconventional, the hotel's reported "haunted" nature is a truly unique selling point. As one reviewer excitedly shared, seeing a ghost makes it "perfect for you - & me! Happy Haunts!" If you're a local who enjoys exploring the spooky side of New Orleans, or simply appreciates a hotel with a compelling backstory and unique atmosphere, St. Helene offers a memorable and intriguing stay that goes beyond typical accommodations. The "adorable" rooms and the ability to open windows for "fresh air" also add to the intimate, historic charm.

However, it's crucial for locals to be aware of the significant concerns about noise, especially in balcony rooms, and potential inconsistencies in cleanliness ("sticky floors"). If you are a light sleeper or prioritize absolute quiet, a balcony room at St. Helene might not be the best fit. Given its French Quarter location, some street noise is always expected, but the specific issues with soundproofing for certain rooms are important to note. Despite these points, for the adventurous local who values prime location, historic ambiance, unique character, and perhaps a ghostly encounter over absolute quietude, St. Helene presents a truly memorable and authentically New Orleans experience that's hard to find elsewhere. It's the kind of place you'll be talking about for years, whether for its charm or its spirited residents.

This place is beautiful but oh sweet Jesus is it loud and customer service gives ZERO cares about your stay once they get that money. Do not stay in a room with a balcony. Unless you drink in excess, blackout and can sleep through anything. Don’t get a balcony room. There is literally no sound proofing in the rooms with a balcony. All night long you can hear trucks driving by picking up trash and recycling. Cars honk at all hours of the night for unknown reasons. Legitimately some of the worst sleep I’ve ever had in my life was at this hotel. There was ZERO warning about how poorly sound proof the balcony rooms would be. I cannot fathom owning this establishment and being so heartless and disrespectful towards patrons staying. I’m not complaining about people walking by drunk being loud, Bourbon street is two blocks away and it’s to be expected. Don’t be cruel to yourself. Find somewhere else to stay. Do not give this agency your money. The floors are sticky in the bedrooms. Which is a bit disgusting.

To start, I reserved the room and within a hr or so it was cancelled because I hadn’t submitted additional info they needed quick enough. Keep in mind this was the middle of a work day. I had to call to have the room rebooked. The person I talked with on the phone was very helpful. When we arrived the code assigned didn’t work and they had to give us a new one. The room has hot and humid when we arrived. It also smelled fishy. The AC didn’t work efficiently the 3 nights we were there. Every night the temp was 77+. Reached out to the operator and they said someone would come by the check it out. No clue if anyone ever came to the room because we weren’t there if they did and we were never notified if they did. The AC got to 73 for a few hour max during our 4 days 3 nights there. We were unable to lock the door from the inside which made me really uncomfortable. Especially knows that the hotel workers had the code… The person sitting in the front lobby area was not personable nor was she very helpful. When we asked for things, it seemed like we were bothering her more than anything else. The location is great and close to a lot. We stayed in a room with a balcony and were woken up every morning by delivery and garbage trucks om the road. Something to keep in mind if staying here. Unfortunately I will not be staying here again nor will I recommend it to anyone else.

Although this location is listed as a Hotel, it's actually operated through Roami, meaning there is no front desk or person to directly speak to when you arrive. There were issues with our Air Conditioning units as well as our televisions, and while Roami provided us with a phone number to text or call to resolve issues, it did take several hours to receive responses. The building itself was fine. There was no functioning elevator during our stay, so that should be considered if you are traveling with anyone who needs considerations for accessibility. Our room(s) were on the third floor, and upon first glance, were very nicely outfitted with a bed, sofa bed, refrigeration and TV. We had street facing rooms, so they had a balcony facing the street, which was really nice. As for the noise, it actually wasn't bad. There were some loud partiers and cars driving past with loud music between 9ish pm and 12am, but it never bothered us, and yes, there was the nightly garbage truck noise, but that wasn't as bad as I'd expected based on some other reviews. Regarding the room itself, there weren't enough outlets in my opinion. Additionally, the outlets in the bathroom sink area did not work at all. The A/C units in the rooms weren't reliable, often having to be turned off and then back on to begin cooling. I believe that they are set to turn off after a set amount of time or if the units are being overly taxed, so they stop cooling, but the fan stays on. Some nights we would go to bed comfortable and wake up sweating because the A/C turned off overnight. Not a deal breaker at all, but something to consider. The free WiFi was great, but we were not provided the password for it, and had to reach out to Roami via the phone number provided to request it. They did ultimately provide it, but it took a text and phone call to actually get a response. The absolute best part of our stay at St Helene was the pool. It wasn't big, but it is secluded and quiet, and was perfect after a hot day out sight seeing. Having a younger kid with us, this was a saving grace. They loved getting in the pool, and for the better part of a week, we had the place all to ourselves. Location of the place was very good in my opinion. It is a 5 minute walk to Jackson Sq, and a couple of blocks south of Bourbon St, so we felt insulated a bit from all the partying, which, again, was great since we were there with a younger kid. It's located within easy walking distance to Canal St, The Aquarium, Cafe Du Monde, etc., so the location was just right for us. The building does have a security person during the majority of the day, located inside the main entrance, and there was a cleaning staff there most days as well to clean up rooms and common areas. We did need new towels mid-stay and the were happy to provide us with fresh ones. Overall, our stay at St Helene through Roami was fine. Not great, but not bad. Pros: Comfy Beds, Great Pool, Great Location, Quiet (all things considered) Cons: Unreliable A/C, Sporadic Guest Service

The building was cute, great location, and affordable - but the condition of the property was bad. When we arrived the toilet in our room was open and filled with urine. The floors hadn’t been swept & were dirty. The AC thermostat had a recurring error that caused it to blink. There were fan/light combo fixtures throughout the building’s hallways but the one outside of our room was broken and quite loud as a result - making it difficult to sleep - we couldn’t find a way to turn it off. The shower knob was broken and in need of repair and the sink leaked from the fixture anytime you turned it on. Common spaces had ladders laying around, extension cords, debris, trash, etc. - during our stay we never saw any staff, so I’m guessing this debris & trash had been laying around for a while. There was a cabinet for extra towels but every time we checked it was empty. Overall it was a very disappointing stay. The property should be closed for a few weeks while maintenance goes through and fixes the many issues. Pool looked nice & fairly clean, but I didn’t trust it enough to get in considering the condition of everything else at the property. The app had a way to report issues for help, but we didn’t bother considering our issue was that the whole building was dirty & in disrepair.
