Paid over $200/night in June for a room here, when I took the New London Ferry for a daytrip to Block Island. The room wreaked of cigarettes even though it was a non-smoking room. The room was loud with people coming and going at all hours of the night. The room was musty, and the shower smelled like mold. The bed was uncomfortable. This was an unpleasant stay even for one night. I cannot believe the room was $235. This place needs a lot of TLC. I do not recommend!

This harborside hotel caters to guests looking for a functional and often budget-conscious stay, particularly appealing to those who appreciate a maritime setting and proximity to the Thames River and local attractions. Environment and Location

The Thames Inn & Marina boasts a unique and appealing location directly on the Thames River in Groton, Connecticut. This harborside setting provides guests with views of the water and access to its own marina, which can accommodate boats up to 55 feet, making it a "dream destination for New England boaters" and fishermen. This direct access to deep water is a significant draw for maritime enthusiasts. The immediate environment offers a "funky little harborside hotel" vibe, which some guests find charming and unique, distinguishing it from more conventional chain hotels.

Its strategic location on Thames Street places it conveniently close to several key points of interest. It is a short 4-minute walk from the historic Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park, offering a blend of history and green space. The New London Ferry Dock is also easily accessible, approximately a 19-minute walk or short drive, providing a gateway to destinations like Block Island. Other significant nearby attractions include the United States Coast Guard Academy (about a 5-minute drive), the Naval Submarine Base New London (around a 6-minute drive), and the artsy Hygienic Art Gallery. While downtown Groton and its amenities are accessible, guests have noted that convenience stores might be a 30-minute walk, and the bus to New London about a 15-minute walk. For those arriving by train, New London Union Station is approximately 0.8 miles away, and Groton-New London Airport (GON) is about 2.7 miles away. The central location also makes it a suitable base for visiting the major casinos, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino, which are within an 18 to 23-minute drive respectively. The area around the inn also features two restaurants within convenient reach, including Paul's Pasta Shop just a minute's walk away.

Services and Amenities

Thames Inn & Marina provides a range of services and amenities aimed at a practical and independent stay. A standout feature of the accommodations is the presence of kitchens in every room. These are typically equipped with a refrigerator, stovetop, oven, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and basic cookware/dishes/utensils. This makes the inn particularly suitable for guests who prefer to prepare their own meals, which can be a cost-saving benefit. Rooms also generally include air conditioning, private bathrooms with shower/tub combinations and complimentary toiletries, and 50-inch flat-screen TVs with premium cable channels. Complimentary wireless internet access is available in all rooms and public areas, ensuring connectivity.

For guests with vehicles, free self-parking is available on-site, with a large parking lot that can accommodate various sizes of vehicles. The inn also offers laundry facilities, which is a valuable amenity for longer stays or for those on extended trips. Other common amenities include a picnic area and barbecue grills, allowing for outdoor dining and relaxation. Daily housekeeping is typically provided, though some guests have described the decor as "nothing fancy and a little worn," suggesting that while clean, the property might benefit from updates. The front desk operates during limited hours (e.g., check-in typically from 3:30 PM to 8:00 PM, check-out by 11:00 AM), so guests should plan their arrival and departure accordingly. The hotel is also pet-friendly, welcoming dogs and cats for an additional fee per pet per night, with service animals exempt from fees, which is a significant plus for travelers with pets.

Features and Distinctive Qualities

The distinctive qualities of Thames Inn & Marina lie in its unique blend of a motel-style setup with apartment-like amenities and a prime waterfront location. The "funky" or "old-school" charm, as described by some guests, can be a positive for those who appreciate character over modern sterility. The in-room kitchens are a major selling point, offering a level of self-sufficiency not typically found in standard hotel rooms. Each accommodation is individually furnished and decorated, adding to the unique feel, and some rooms even feature private yards, which is a rare and appealing amenity.

Customer feedback about the Thames Inn & Marina is quite varied. While some guests have reported unpleasant experiences, citing issues like strong cigarette smell in non-smoking rooms, noise, mustiness, moldy shower smells, and uncomfortable beds, other reviews offer a contrasting, more positive perspective. Many recent reviews praise the "very clean" rooms, "comfortable" beds, and "friendly and helpful staff." Guests have described the staff as "excellent" and "super helpful," indicating a strong commitment to service from the team. The "beautiful view" of the water and the opportunity to "watch the ships go by" are frequently highlighted as enjoyable aspects of the stay. The "studio apartment" like setup of the rooms, combined with the low pet fee, has been described as a "great deal for the price" and a "hidden gem" by some. This disparity in reviews suggests that the experience can be inconsistent, but that recent efforts or certain room types offer a much more positive stay, particularly under the lens of appreciating a more rustic, non-chain hotel experience.

Promotional Information

Thames Inn & Marina often appeals to travelers seeking value and a unique experience rather than traditional hotel luxury. While specific promotional offers may vary by season or booking platform, its competitive pricing, especially for rooms featuring kitchenettes, can be a significant draw. The inclusion of free Wi-Fi and complimentary parking adds to the overall value proposition. Guests should check various online travel agencies and the hotel's direct contact information for the most up-to-date rates and any package deals that might be available. Given its niche appeal as a harborside inn with self-catering options, it naturally promotes itself as a practical and unique choice for extended stays or for those who prefer more independence during their travels. The pet-friendly policy also serves as a strong promotional point for travelers with animals.

In conclusion, Thames Inn & Marina offers a distinct and often affordable lodging option within the "Hotels Near Me" category in Groton, Connecticut. Its undeniable charm comes from its direct marina access and the apartment-style amenities in its rooms, particularly the kitchenettes. While some past reviews indicate areas for improvement in terms of room condition, more recent feedback points to a cleaner environment and excellent, friendly staff. For travelers who value a unique, independent, and pet-friendly stay with a waterfront ambiance, Thames Inn & Marina presents a practical choice, particularly appealing for its value at its price point.

We liked this place. Funky little harborside hotel, friendly and helpful staff. The place, furniture and decor are nothing fancy and a little worn but we like that kind of place. Convenient to two restaurants, 30 minute walk to convenience stores. 15 minute walk to catch bus to New London. Big parking lot if you are driving (we came on Amtrak and taxied to the hotel).

I have no idea how others are giving this place a positive review. The room we were given was filthy. The room reeked of recent smoke. Everything was falling apart. The bed had two limp mismatched pillows and a threadbare mattress. The bathroom was uncleaned. The furnishings are cheap home furninshings, not hotel style. The door key we were given did not work in our door. We spent about 30 seconds in the room before cutting our losses and going to a real hotel. Avoid this place!

Stayed here for a week. Had a work thing. Very close to my work site. The cost was $650 for the week (so it's not bad). Wifi barely worked, the parking lot needs attention, and remodeling is needed. I really didn't know who was running the place because the owner was on medical leave (as I was told). But the people I did interact with were so kind and polite. Checking in and out was easy and contacting office employees were very easy to get a hold off. The scenery from the parking lot was amazing.

Husband and I stayed here to visit Mystic and Stonington. Thames Inn was much cheaper than other options and it was a great experience for the price. Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and our room was spacious, newly renovated, and very clean. Don’t be fooled by its offbeat location, you’ll be comfortable for the price!
