If you’re visiting Madison and want a relaxing, well-located place to stay, this is a great option.
For those of us who appreciate the best of what our state has to offer, a visit to Madison is often on the agenda. It’s a city that effortlessly blends a vibrant urban atmosphere with the serene beauty of its surrounding lakes. At the heart of this unique mix sits The Edgewater Hotel, a stunning property that serves as a landmark on the shores of Lake Mendota. More than just a place to sleep, The Edgewater is an experience, a destination in itself that offers breathtaking views, exceptional dining, and a sophisticated yet welcoming environment. This article will provide a comprehensive overview of what makes this hotel a premier choice for locals and visitors alike, from its unique location to its standout services and amenities. Whether you're planning a romantic weekend, a special celebration, or a simple "staycation" to enjoy the best of our capital city, The Edgewater promises a memorable and luxurious retreat.
Upon arrival, the hotel's grandeur and thoughtful design are immediately apparent. As one guest noted, you are greeted with a "welcoming entryway and a stunning view of the water." The hotel is comprised of two distinct buildings, both of which are beautifully designed and contribute to its overall charm. The architecture and interior design are modern and clean, creating an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and comfortable. The rooms themselves are a testament to this, with guests consistently describing them as "impressively spacious for a standard layout" and "clean, modern, and comfortable." This attention to detail extends to the in-room amenities, which are "thoughtful" and enhance the overall guest experience. The beds are noted for being "comfy," ensuring a restful night's sleep after a day of exploring Madison's vibrant downtown. While the hotel’s elegance and prime location come with a higher price point, as some guests have observed, the value is found in the quality of the property and the services provided.
The Edgewater is a hub of activity and an ideal place for a night on the town without ever having to leave the premises. The hotel hosts a variety of events, from retirement parties to weddings, which can create a lively and dynamic atmosphere on weekend evenings. The multiple on-site dining and bar options, such as The Boathouse and the sky bar, provide diverse experiences for different tastes and occasions. The Boathouse, in particular, is a local favorite, offering outside seating with live music and a fantastic view of the lake, making it a perfect spot to relax and unwind. The "Wisconsin burger" at The Boathouse is even called out by one guest as being "very tasty," showcasing the quality of the on-site dining. The professional and efficient service at the bars ensures that even when crowds are large, you are well taken care of.
The location of The Edgewater Hotel is arguably its most compelling feature. Situated at 1001 Wisconsin Pl, Madison, WI 53703, USA, the hotel is right on the waterfront of Lake Mendota, offering unparalleled views and a serene backdrop that is unique to Madison. This prime location puts you within easy walking distance of some of the city's most beloved attractions. State Street, with its endless array of shops, restaurants, and bars, is just an 8-minute walk away, as noted by a guest who enjoyed a post-dinner ice cream stroll. This means you can easily explore the vibrant downtown scene without the need for a car. The hotel is also adjacent to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and is a short distance from the State Capitol, making it a perfect base for tourists, business travelers, or parents visiting their college students.
Getting to and from the hotel is relatively straightforward, although some guests have pointed out that navigating the multiple buildings and floors can be a bit challenging at first, particularly for finding the parking, restaurants, and main lobby. One guest mentioned "a lot of stairs" and a lack of maps, suggesting that a bit of patience or a quick question to the friendly staff can help you orient yourself. A key aspect of accessibility, however, is the hotel's shuttle service. The Edgewater provides a convenient airport shuttle service to and from Dane County Airport (MSN) and a local shuttle service within a 2-mile radius, which is a fantastic perk for guests who prefer not to drive. This service is part of the hotel's "resort fee" and is based on availability. For those who do bring a car, on-site parking is available, though it comes with an additional fee.
The hotel’s waterfront position is not just for show; it also offers a variety of activities and a unique sense of place. The large plaza between the two buildings, which is open to the public, is a hub for community events, concerts, and in the winter, transforms into an ice-skating rink. This makes the hotel a destination for both guests and local residents, fostering a lively and inclusive atmosphere.

May 18, 2025 · Ryan SmithWon a free night from work. My wife and I used this as an excuse for a night on the town. Nice hotel and excellent location on the lake. We had dinner at the boat house on site. Outside seating had live music. We are at the inside bar due to the heat outside. The 2 bartenders were very efficient with how they handled crowds. The Wisconsin burger was very tasty. Once the big crowds calmed down it was nice to be able to hold conversation without having to raise your voice. We walked down state street for some ice cream after dinner which was about an 8 minute walk. The rooms were nice beds were comfy. There were 3 events going on the Saturday night we stayed. Retirement party in the sky bar and 2 other wedding events in the other bars. Good Room quality Beds The boat house food. Overall location Could be better For the room value at almost $400 not much was included as shown by the breakfast menu attached. Parking in the parking lot as a guest was a $32 charge that was not expected. The room seemed to have an awkward time regulating temperature through the nice. Air conditioner would turn on and could wake up a light sleeper in the middle of the night The bad The building is difficult to navigate. There are no maps around. Someone who stays there regularly would probably be able to figure it out after 2 or 3 stays. Seemed like we would just take the stairs frequently to try and figure out what floor parking restaurants and main lobby were located. (There are a lot of stairs) The price. As we have just book a wedding at an adults only all inclusive resort in Cozumel. The price of the room we stayed in was almost $100 more per night than the all inclusive resort. Overall. It is a nice place beautiful views and I'm sure if you or your company is able to afford this price point it is a nice option.
Jun 22, 2025 · Steven BunaThe Edgewater Hotel leaves a lot to be desired primarily with their hospitality training (or lack thereof). I had unnecessary issues checking in, and was surprised at the lack of effort from Staff. As someone who has worked in 5 Diamond Hotels, I’m frankly shocked at their current status. No luggage assistance, apologies, or check ins beside an informal text. Upon arriving back in the evening I spoke to who I presume is the Front Desk Manager about the hotel car arrangements to the airport and that my flight would necessitate leaving at about 5:55. He was rude that “No, our guy doesn’t start until 6am, you’ll need to get an Uber”. I had to request a local driver or taxi service. To be clear the minimum expectation of service should be “Of course Mr/Mrs Guest, allow me to explore options. May I give you a call at your room or cell phone when I have setup? If you could kindly confirm your airline and flight number.” Imagine my surprise when I woke up at 5:30am this morning to walk downstairs in the pouring rain to find another couple being ushered under an umbrella to the hotel car that was, that’s correct- taking them to the airport. I waited for a few minutes while my Uber was across the parking lot and then had to run to it myself. I have an upcoming month long stay in Madison and this was to determine if it was the right fit, and it is absolutely not. I won’t stay here again.
Jul 26, 2025 · Shelby BarteltNothing special. You can get a better room at a run down Motel 6. We stayed in a "suite" with a lakeview that supposedly was a larger room. Carpet is dated and worn. Window blind didn't even work. Only thing nice was staff. Don't waste your time and money here.
Jun 16, 2025 · Jay XiongLovely historic hotel in a breathtaking location overlooking Lake Mendota in Madison. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, and my room was prepared and ready prior to the check-in time, which is lovely after an early flight. There is a cute gift shop on premises, and two restaurants (I think). The prices are quite a bit higher than neighboring hotels, so this would not be the place to stay if you were budget-conscious, but it's a wonderful splurge and upscale experience.
