Beautiful location, but it’s apparent that management has changed in recent years. Restaurant is a MAJOR disappointment. Very expensive for the product / service delivered. I will never return unless ownership and/or chef changes.
For local users searching on the "Hotels Near Of Me" platform, The Ram's Head Inn on Shelter Island, NY, presents a historically significant and scenically located option. Situated at 108 S Ram Island Dr, Shelter Island Heights, NY 11965, USA, and reachable by phone at (631) 749-0811 or +1 631-749-0811, this inn has long been recognized for its beautiful environment and charm. However, recent guest feedback suggests that while the physical location remains stunning, certain aspects of its services and management may have experienced changes, leading to a mixed guest experience.
Environment and Location:
The Ram's Head Inn boasts a truly "beautiful location" on Shelter Island, specifically on South Ram Island Drive, overlooking Coecles Harbor. This waterfront setting is a significant draw, offering picturesque views and a serene, secluded atmosphere that epitomizes the charm of Shelter Island. Shelter Island itself is a unique destination, known for its commitment to preserving natural beauty, with a large portion of the island dedicated to conservation, including Mashomack Preserve. This ensures a tranquil environment, characterized by lush landscapes, peaceful waterways, and abundant opportunities for enjoying nature. The inn's position allows guests to experience stunning sunsets over the water, a key element of its aesthetic appeal. The overall environment is one of quiet elegance and natural splendor, ideal for those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The island's accessibility, primarily by ferry, contributes to its secluded and exclusive feel, further enhancing the tranquil experience offered by the inn. The surroundings are conducive to relaxation, leisurely walks, and enjoying the island's unique ecosystem. This beautiful natural setting remains a consistent positive aspect of The Ram's Head Inn, making it an attractive choice for those who value scenic beauty and a peaceful retreat.
Services and Features:
The Ram's Head Inn, as a historic establishment, traditionally offers a charming and intimate experience. However, recent guest reviews indicate significant concerns regarding certain aspects of its services. While the staff was not explicitly mentioned, the review highlights a "terrible experience" due to a major operational flaw: a mix-up with room keys resulting in other guests' belongings being found in a checked-in room. This suggests a critical issue with check-in procedures and room management, raising concerns about security and guest privacy, and implying that leaving valuables in the room might not be advisable. This level of "mess with check-in" is unexpected, especially for a property with a "very small number of rooms," suggesting a lapse in standard hotel protocols. In terms of features, the inn is known to have a restaurant. However, recent feedback describes it as a "MAJOR disappointment," citing it as "very expensive for the product / service delivered." This indicates a decline in the culinary experience, suggesting that the quality of food and service in the restaurant may not align with the prices charged. This is a crucial point for guests considering dining on-site. Historically, inns of this caliber often offer a unique, boutique experience with personalized touches, comfortable rooms, and a focus on tranquility. While the natural beauty of the location remains, the recent operational and dining experiences suggest that potential guests should manage their expectations regarding service consistency and the quality of the on-site restaurant. Without further information, details on specific room amenities, common areas, or other recreational facilities are not available, but the core features of a historic inn with a restaurant are present, albeit with noted challenges in their current execution.
Promotional Information and Guest Experience:
For users searching on "Hotels Near Of Me" with an interest in Shelter Island, The Ram's Head Inn's primary promotional strength lies in its "beautiful location" and historic charm. It appeals to guests seeking a tranquil, waterfront escape in the Hamptons area. The inn's secluded setting on Ram Island Dr, offering picturesque views of Coecles Harbor, makes it an attractive option for romantic getaways, peaceful retreats, or those looking to immerse themselves in Shelter Island's natural beauty. However, potential guests should be aware of critical feedback regarding recent changes in management, which appear to have negatively impacted the overall guest experience, particularly concerning the restaurant and check-in process. The explicit statements of "will never return unless ownership and/or chef changes" and "this place is not worth the money you pay for a night there" are strong indicators of significant guest dissatisfaction. This suggests that while the inn's physical assets (location, nature) are outstanding, the operational delivery and value proposition have faltered. Therefore, while promotional efforts might highlight the beauty and historical significance, an objective introduction must balance this with the recent negative experiences. Guests should be advised to manage expectations regarding service quality, especially concerning dining and room management, and to consider the potential for operational inconsistencies. For those prioritizing a stunning natural setting above all else and willing to overlook potential service issues, The Ram's Head Inn could still be a consideration. However, for guests who expect consistent high-quality service, particularly given the potential price point associated with such a location, the recent reviews indicate areas of significant concern that might influence their decision.

May 11, 2025 · Andrew ScottTerrible experience.Despite all the beauty of the location and the beautiful nature around, this place is not worth the money you pay for a night there. We had an unpleasant moment when, having checked into the room, we went for a walk, and in the evening we wanted to change clothes and take a shower, and there were already other people’s things in the room. The number of rooms there is very small and I have never seen such a mess with check-in even at large resorts. Just remember that when receiving the keys to the room, someone else can also get them and you cannot leave valuables in the room.
Feb 18, 2025 · KseniiaWe were there for mother’s day brunch. great food& service. Beautiful place to eat and relax on the lawn afterwards. There’s baby sheep too.
May 11, 2025 · Jay Van DoodTerrible experience. We reserved a two bedroom suite and stayed in rooms 2 - 3. The rates were very high, though comparable for peak season on Shelter Island. However, the room and service were some of the worst we ever experienced. Problems included: 1. No AC: You need to request the AC setting from the front desk. However, it never went on. 2. Room Full of Flies: Upon check-in, the room had at least 20 flies. 3. Window Screens with Holes: Since there was no AC, we opened the windows. All of the screens were very old and full of holes. Most likely the source of continuous flies. 4. No housekeeping: We did not get housekeeping. Front desk women claimed it was a “communication” error. However, they offered no apology. 5. Barely Usable Shower: They water pressure is so low, its hard to wash off soap. 6. Gross breakfast: The “continental breakfast” was nothing more than a Kuerig machine, yogurt and milk. 7. Terrible Service: We knew that this was an old lodge and were not expecting five star accommodations. But no AC, no housekeeping, tons of flies, etc. while still charging so much money felt like we were being ripped off. The front desk woman was dismissive, never followed-up and claimed that the owner would “call us” to discuss. No one ever followed up. We like the property for evening drinks, but would never stay here again.
Aug 22, 2024 · Michael SmithThe Ram's Head Inn is a perfect example of an Inn with everything at it's fingertips, with no idea how to treat its customers. While the grounds and Inn itself are beautiful, I was quite disappointed at the level of service for the rate of over $550 per night. Not only was our room incredibly cramped and small (lacking basic equipment such as hair dryers, iron, etc.), and the service at the restaurant for dinner was painfully slow and inattentive, but the one thing an Inn of this caliber which claims it has free breakfast should provide - a hot, homemade breakfast, was not provided. The cheap, cold bites and Keurig coffee was not a welcoming sight. They clearly wanted us to wait until 11am to buy breakfast from their sub-par, overpriced restaurant. Additionally, the woman behind the counter had an attitude. The whole time I was there, I felt as though I was burdening them by my presence. Save yourself the anguish and don't stay here!
