Overall, a good place for one night as a solo traveler. The bed was amazing and breakfast was varied and tasted fine (also a surprise because they don't let you opt out of it?). The clean wasn't great - I found rubber hair bands on the floor in my room from a previous guest that hadn't been swept up. The showers don't get very hot and water pressure is pitiful. Finally, the staff left a lot to be desired. I certainly don't need overly friendly but they could at least pretend that they're not annoyed to have to interact with guests.

citizenM Boston Back Bay hotel Introduce

For those navigating the "Hotels Near Of Me" landscape in Boston and seeking a blend of modern design, innovative technology, and a prime location, the citizenM Boston Back Bay hotel stands out as a unique and compelling option. Located at 408 Newbury St, Boston, MA 02115, USA, this hotel is part of the distinctive citizenM brand, known for its "affordable luxury" concept, which streamlines traditional hotel services to offer high-quality accommodations in vibrant urban centers.

The citizenM Boston Back Bay hotel, opened in 2024, is situated within the new mixed-use development, Lyrik Back Bay. This 15-story tower is citizenM's largest hotel to date, featuring 399 signature rooms. The hotel's design, crafted by citizenM's long-standing partner concrete Amsterdam and local architecture firm Elkus Manfredi, reflects a contemporary aesthetic with a focus on smart design, technology integration, and inviting communal spaces. From the moment guests step through the trademark red-tinted revolving door, they are introduced to a different kind of hotel experience.

Environment and Location

The hotel's location on Newbury Street in the historic Back Bay is exceptionally desirable. Newbury Street itself is renowned for its charming Victorian brownstones, which house an eclectic mix of high-end boutiques, art galleries, lively cafes, and diverse restaurants. Guests can easily explore this iconic street, perfect for shopping, dining, and people-watching, right outside the hotel's doorstep.

Beyond Newbury Street, the citizenM Boston Back Bay offers fantastic accessibility to many of Boston's key attractions. It is just steps away from the Hynes Convention Center (a 1-minute walk to the Hynes Convention Center Station and a 5-minute walk to the center itself), making it incredibly convenient for conference attendees. Fenway Park, the beloved home of the Boston Red Sox, is only 0.6 miles (approximately an 8-minute walk), while Northeastern University is about a 10-minute walk. Copley Square, with its architectural masterpieces and vibrant public spaces, is also within a 15-minute stroll. The hotel's position within the Fenway–Kenmore neighborhood means excellent access to various public transportation options, including the "T" (subway) line, ensuring seamless travel throughout the city.

The hotel's interior environment is designed to be vibrant and engaging. The lobby, referred to as the "living room," is the social hub of the hotel, encompassing the entire second floor. It's a stylish, multipurpose space filled with cozy seating areas, communal workspaces, quirky artwork, and curated books. This "co-working space but with comfy furniture" atmosphere is ideal for both relaxation and productivity. Floor-to-ceiling windows often overlook the lively Back Bay, enhancing the urban connection.

Services and Amenities

citizenM is built on a self-service, tech-savvy model, aiming for efficiency and modern convenience. While there is a 24/7 front desk with "ambassadors" available for assistance, the check-in and check-out process is primarily self-service via computer kiosks in the lobby. Guests can also use the citizenM mobile app for check-in, room controls, and various requests, ensuring a streamlined experience. It's important to note that while staff are present, their interaction style is often direct and efficient, which some guests appreciate for its lack of "overly friendly" pretense.

The guest rooms, though compact (typically 151 sq ft), are ingeniously designed to maximize space and comfort. All 399 rooms are identical and feature:

  • XL King-Size Beds: The focal point of the room, these wall-to-wall beds are equipped with premium bedding and pillow-top mattresses, consistently praised by guests as "amazing" and "super comfortable."
  • Smart Room Technology: Each room is controlled by an in-room iPad or the citizenM app. This allows guests to effortlessly manage lighting (including mood lighting with changeable colors), curtains (blackout blinds), temperature, and entertainment (43-inch LED TVs with premium channels, Netflix, and casting options).
  • High-Pressure Rain Showers: Bathrooms feature rainfall showerheads and eco-friendly toiletries, along with large, fluffy towels and full-size hairdryers. While some guests have noted issues with water pressure and heat, this is not a universal experience.
  • Connectivity: Free super-fast Wi-Fi is available in all rooms and public areas, supporting multiple devices for seamless connectivity.
  • Storage: Smartly designed deep storage drawers under the bed and wardrobes/cupboards provide ample space for luggage and clothing.
  • Other Conveniences: Rooms include a mini-fridge, in-room safe, and a desk/laptop-friendly workspace. Ironing rooms ("Iron Heaven") with irons/ironing boards are available on each floor, as in-room irons are intentionally omitted to encourage use of communal amenities.

For dining, the hotel's signature canteenM operates 24/7, offering food and drinks at all hours. A daily buffet breakfast is available (for a surcharge, typically around USD 20 per person), featuring a varied spread that often includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Reviewers describe the breakfast as "varied and tasted fine" and "awesome." The canteenM also serves a range of international cuisine for lunch and dinner, along with a coffee shop/cafe and a bar/lounge area. While the breakfast is generally well-received, the 24/7 food and drink offering provides flexibility for travelers with varying schedules.

Additional amenities include a 24-hour gym with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Back Bay, featuring modern exercise equipment including Peloton bikes, smart treadmills, a water rowing machine, and dumbbells. There is also an expansive rooftop (open seasonally/in winter) offering unparalleled city views, and an outdoor patio overlooking the Back Bay, perfect for enjoying a drink or a snack.

Features and Unique Aspects

The core philosophy of citizenM revolves around "affordable luxury" and a streamlined, technology-driven experience. The compact, modular rooms are highly optimized for comfort and functionality, proving that "small but designed extremely well" can make a significant difference. The ability to control almost everything in the room via an iPad or the mobile app is a distinctive high-tech feature.

The emphasis on communal spaces, particularly the extensive "living room" lobby, encourages a social atmosphere, blurring the lines between a hotel lobby and a vibrant co-working space. This design choice is intentional, catering to modern travelers who appreciate shared spaces for working, relaxing, and socializing.

Sustainability is also a focus for citizenM, with practices like using eco-friendly cleaning products, LED lighting, water-efficient showers, and recycling programs integrated into the property's operations. The hotel also boasts a diverse and welcoming staff, referred to as "ambassadors," who are trained in multiple roles to provide comprehensive assistance.

Parking is a key consideration: the citizenM Boston Back Bay does not have on-site parking. Guests who are driving are advised to use third-party services like SpotHero to reserve a spot in nearby garages, which is a common practice in downtown Boston.

Promotional Information and Guest Insights

While specific daily promotions vary, citizenM frequently offers loyalty programs such as mycitizenM+ membership. This membership (available for an annual fee) provides significant perks, including 15% off all stays (up to 30% during sales), free late check-out until 2:00 PM (instead of 11:00 AM), 15% off food and drink (excluding breakfast and alcohol in Boston due to state rules), and early access to sales. This program is particularly beneficial for frequent travelers to citizenM properties.

Guest reviews consistently highlight the hotel's "great location" and "gorgeous" aesthetic. The "phenomenal" views from higher floors are a recurring positive. The comfort of the XL king-size beds is a universal praise point. While some guests have noted minor issues with cleanliness (e.g., missed items) or staff interactions (perceived as less overtly friendly), the overall consensus remains highly positive, with many expressing intent to return and explore other citizenM locations. The hotel is particularly well-suited for solo travelers, couples, and those on business trips who appreciate a modern, efficient, and centrally located base in Boston.

In conclusion, for those searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" who prioritize a smart, stylish, and technologically advanced stay in a vibrant urban setting, the citizenM Boston Back Bay hotel offers an attractive and well-regarded option, combining convenience with a fresh approach to hospitality.

After staying at the citizenM NYC Bowery location, we decided to book this for our trip to Boston. Location was great, in walking distance to Fenway/HoB, and the hotel was really gorgeous and what I expected. View from floor 12 was phenomenal and I'll definitely keep this hotel in my back pocket for next time we're back. Make sure if you are driving in that you rent a spot with spothero, because there's no on site parking, but it was no big deal because we knew to reserve something ahead of time. Really love this hotel chain and looking forward to staying with them at other locations.

Amazing location, this amazing view. Very small room (similar to Tokyo hotel size) Everything controlled by an iPad in room, would be a good experience if all things go well, which is not the case for us. AC stopped working on our second night, was told maintenance order can only be put the next morning, so we live in a small room with no window and no ventilation. The next morning no one contacted us, we called front desk again and was told to wait for maintenance for few hours. And finally after no AC and ventilation for 24 hours were offered to switch to a different room.

Great location and hotel. Stayed for 2 nights. Have to give it 4 starts though due to housekeeping issues. Firstly, no one told us you had to order housekeeping on the iPad. Assume this would be included (especially as we were paying over $500 per night). We ordered house keeping for the 2nd day. Before we left for the marathon, we put all our towels on the floor. After we arrived back (we were out from 6am-2:30pm), housekeeping hadn’t come. We left again at 3:30pm and came back around 6pm. Still no house keeping. We asked front desk and they said cleaners had left for the day. Also, there are numerous taxes that the hotel didn’t tell me about prior to booking (e.g convention centre tax?). Would have been good to get a heads up.

Thoroughly enjoyed the stay and would definitely come back again! Location was great and room was comfortable. We were hesitant initially based on reviews of the small rooms, but felt very comfortable for two people. I would recommend stay here as long as it is only 1-2 people only and you are okay with technology (Self check in, tablet for lights in room, etc).
