Cute boutique hotel in a prime location at a great price. Everything was clean and well maintained, however, the walls are incredibly thin. That was rough when you wanted to sleep in but was hard when you hear people in the bathroom or talking in bed. Lastly, don’t book through a third party due to the way the hotel uses a contactless check-in. There isn’t always someone who works in the building available when you need it if anything were to happen with check-in. Despite that, I’d still suggest this place as a great place to stay.
For those exploring options under the "Hotels Near Of Me" category in Boston, the No. 284 Back Bay Hotel, Sonder offers a distinctive and appealing choice. Situated at 284 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA 02115, USA, this Sonder property is a charming boutique hotel housed in a beautiful five-story, red-brick building constructed in 1880, embodying classic Georgian architecture. It provides a unique blend of historic charm with modern, tech-forward amenities, making it a compelling option for both leisure and business travelers.
No. 284 Back Bay Hotel, Sonder operates with a distinct approach to hospitality, emphasizing a mobile-first, contactless guest experience. This means that while there may be a staff member available in the building for assistance, the primary mode of check-in and communication is digital. Guests receive special check-in instructions and an access code via email prior to arrival, allowing for seamless self-entry. This system, while convenient for many, does mean that those accustomed to traditional front desk service might find it a different experience.
The hotel's location in the prestigious Back Bay neighborhood is undoubtedly one of its strongest assets. Commonwealth Avenue, known for its tree-lined mall and magnificent brownstone residences, offers a picturesque setting. This prime address places guests within a very short walking distance to some of Boston's most popular attractions and vibrant areas. Newbury Street, famous for its high-end boutiques, art galleries, and diverse dining options, is just a minute's walk away. The Hynes Convention Center is also very close, about a 5 to 6-minute walk, making it convenient for convention-goers. Copley Square, with its architectural gems like Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library, is approximately a 10-minute walk. Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, is about a 15 to 19-minute walk, and Northeastern University is also within easy reach, about a 13-minute walk.
The immediate surroundings provide a rich urban experience. The Commonwealth Avenue Mall itself is a lovely green space for strolls. The Shops at Prudential Center, offering extensive retail and dining, are a mere 2 to 4-minute walk. The area is brimming with restaurants and cafes, allowing guests to easily find a wide variety of culinary experiences. From contemporary Greek cuisine to cozy coffee houses and casual bars, there's something for every taste just steps away.
The building's historic character is preserved, but the interiors are designed with a plush, contemporary aesthetic. The rooms feature modern furnishings and a clean, well-maintained environment. While the rooms are described as cozy and well-laid out, some guest reviews mention that they can be on the smaller side, especially for more than one person, though still comfortable. The presence of a shared courtyard offers a serene outdoor space for guests to relax.
No. 284 Back Bay Hotel, Sonder focuses on providing essential modern conveniences with a self-service model. Key amenities across its 23 individually furnished guestrooms often include:
One aspect noted by guests is the lack of a traditional restaurant or bar on-site. However, this is largely mitigated by the hotel's location in a neighborhood renowned for its dining scene. The convenience of having numerous eateries within a stone's throw means guests have endless choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The "Sonder Standard" is a key feature, promising consistent quality, designer details, keyless entry, fast free Wi-Fi, and 24/7 digital concierge service across all Sonder properties. This makes No. 284 a reliable choice for travelers familiar with the Sonder brand or those who appreciate a modern, tech-integrated stay.
The historic brownstone setting combined with contemporary interiors creates a distinctive "boutique hotel" feel. The thoughtful inclusion of kitchenettes in many units, coupled with the self-service model, makes it particularly suitable for longer stays or those who prefer more independence than a traditional hotel. The secure entry system and digital communication are also highlighted as advantages by some guests who value convenience and privacy.
While the contactless check-in is lauded for its efficiency, some reviews suggest that booking directly with Sonder might be smoother than through a third party to ensure proper access information. Guests planning to arrive outside of normal check-in hours receive explicit instructions and an access code, and are encouraged to download the Sonder mobile app for a seamless experience. A damage deposit is typically required upon booking, collected by credit card.
Sonder properties, including No. 284, often appeal to travelers looking for a blend of hotel comfort and apartment-style living. While specific flash sales or promotions were not detailed, guests often highlight the "great price" for the prime location, suggesting good value for money. The ability to cook some meals in the room can also lead to cost savings compared to dining out for every meal.
Reviews consistently praise the hotel's "perfect location" and "cleanliness." The staff, even if primarily accessed virtually or on an on-demand basis, are noted as helpful and friendly when interaction occurs. The occasional challenges mentioned by guests include noise, particularly from the restaurant alley below (even from higher floors), and the thinness of the walls, which can lead to hearing neighbors. However, the provision of a sound machine in rooms demonstrates Sonder's awareness and attempt to mitigate this issue. For guests traveling with teenagers, the pull-out sofa beds in suites are noted as "a bit uncomfortable" but generally "not horrible."
Overall, No. 284 Back Bay Hotel, Sonder is highly recommended for its excellent location, stylish design, and convenient contactless experience. It is an ideal choice for travelers seeking a modern, independent stay in the heart of Boston's historic Back Bay, offering a compelling alternative to traditional hotel accommodations for those searching for "Hotels Near Of Me."

Feb 24, 2025 · Piso MPerfect location. Pull out sofa was a bit uncomfortable for my teenager, but not horrible. It is small, but well laid out. You can hear noise from the restaurant at the alley below in the middle of the night (even from 4th floor), but they have a sound machine to counteract. Place was clean, had plenty of towels, etc and there is a staff member. Overall would def recommend esp for the location.
Apr 20, 2025 · N WAlthough Sonder No.284 does not have a Front Desk, I needed assistance with building access. Sean who works in the office during the day was helpful, friendly and altogether outstanding. My corner room had 4 large windows overlooking the pedestrian walkway on Commonwealth. Impeccable cleanliness, very comfortable bed, and ideally located to Newbury and Boylston streets as well as Boston Common. Loved it.
Apr 18, 2025 · Marcia CrawfordPerfect spot to stay in Back Bay! The room was perfect and huge! Matched the pictures exactly! We felt very safe and comfortable during our 4-night stay. The room wasn’t drafty and stayed warm throughout our below freezing temperatures getaway.
