Don't even go near this property. The disclaimer of no elevator or ADA is strategically hidden in the description so that no one notices. I had to pay 100% cancellation because of suffering an injury and realizing I cant go up 3 floors. The property did not help one bit to arrange a room on the ground floor or even at any other sister property. Essentially I lost over $3K and booked another place last minute. Try calling the help line and you would be lucky to get through before 45 mins of wait. Their verification system is a pain and a petty thing like checking in can take hours. The worst of the worst.
For individuals and groups seeking accommodation in the "Hotels Near Of Me" category in Boston, Sonder The Magnolia Apartments Back Bay, located at 234 Newbury St, Boston, MA 02116, USA, offers a unique aparthotel experience. This property, managed by Sonder, aims to provide modern, design-forward apartments with the convenience of a hotel, situated in one of Boston's most iconic and vibrant neighborhoods.
The environment of Sonder The Magnolia Apartments Back Bay is intrinsically linked to its prime location on Newbury Street. This renowned Back Bay avenue is characterized by charming storefronts, leafy trees, and historic red-brick Edwardian exteriors. The apartments themselves are designed with a contemporary aesthetic, featuring individually decorated and furnished spaces that aim for comfort and quality. Guests can expect a modern, stylish interior with designer details, and while the layout and design may vary from unit to unit, a consistent quality is promised by the Sonder brand. However, it is crucial to note a significant environmental factor mentioned in guest reviews: the building is a four-story property with "stair-only access" for most units, as the elevator is "solely reserved for the Studio - Disability Access." This means upper floors are only accessible by stairs, which can be a considerable challenge for guests with mobility issues or heavy luggage. Additionally, one particular unit, Room #21, has been highlighted for significant noise issues due to its proximity to a Shake Shack restaurant below, playing music from 10 AM to 11 PM daily. While the location on Newbury Street offers an abundance of shopping, dining, and cultural experiences right outside the door, potential guests should be aware that it is a lively neighborhood "prone to noise from nearby nightlife."
In terms of services, Sonder operates with a digital-first approach, which differs from traditional hotel models. There is "no front desk" at this property. Guests receive check-in instructions and an access code via email (typically 3 days before arrival) and are encouraged to download the Sonder mobile app for assistance. This enables "contact-free check-in/out" and "24/7 virtual support," allowing guests to manage their stay, schedule housekeeping services on-demand (for a nominal fee and 24 hours in advance), and request extra items through the app. While this system offers flexibility and independence, some guests have reported long wait times on the helpline and a frustrating verification process, making simple tasks like checking in lengthy. Concierge services are available, presumably through the virtual platform, to assist with planning. The property offers luggage storage. For accessibility, the Studio - Disability Access unit is specifically designed for guests with disabilities, featuring a transfer shower and ample space. However, as noted, this is the only unit with elevator access, and the building's overall lack of elevators for other units is a critical piece of information that Sonder states is "strategically hidden" in their description, leading to significant disappointment for some guests. Pets are not allowed, with the exception of service animals.
The features of Sonder The Magnolia Apartments are designed to provide a self-sufficient and comfortable stay, resembling an apartment more than a traditional hotel room. Each of the 11 smoke-free apartments includes a private bathroom with designer toiletries, a hair dryer, and towels. Kitchenettes are a standard feature, equipped with a full-size refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, electric kettle, and essential cookware/dishes/utensils, although there is no oven or stove in most units. This allows guests to prepare their own meals and store food. In-suite laundry facilities, including a washing machine and dryer, are also a significant amenity, particularly for longer stays. For entertainment, units come with 40-inch flat-screen TVs offering digital channels and Roku streaming services (no cable TV). Air conditioning and heating ensure comfort year-round. Free in-room Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Individual furnishings and decor give each unit a unique feel. While there's no on-site parking, guests are in a metropolitan area where parking is challenging and often expensive, necessitating the use of paid parking garages nearby. Cribs/infant beds are available free of charge upon request. The property is a smoke-free establishment. Safety features include carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors. The varied sizes of the apartments, from studios to superior suites with sofa beds, cater to different group sizes, though the overall number of units is limited (11 units across 5 floors).
From a promotional standpoint, Sonder The Magnolia Apartments Back Bay emphasizes its prime location on Newbury Street, offering guests direct access to high-end shopping, a diverse dining scene, and Boston's historic charm. It promotes itself as a "modern retreat" that combines the comfort and privacy of an apartment with the reliability of a professionally managed hospitality brand. The inclusion of kitchenettes and in-unit laundry is a key selling point for travelers seeking more than just a hotel room, whether for short or extended stays. The convenience of contact-free check-in and 24/7 virtual support is highlighted as a modern, seamless experience. The property is also promoted for its proximity to major Boston landmarks such as Copley Square, the Boston Public Library, Boston Common, and accessible public transportation (Hynes Convention Center Green Line and Back Bay Orange Line stations). However, based on customer reviews, potential guests should be aware that the promotional information might not adequately emphasize certain critical aspects, particularly the lack of elevators for most units and potential noise from ground-floor establishments. While the location is indeed excellent, the overall experience can be significantly impacted by these factors. Sonder's affiliation with Marriott Bonvoy might also be a promotional draw for some guests seeking loyalty program benefits.
In conclusion, Sonder The Magnolia Apartments Back Bay offers a stylish and well-located option within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category for those visiting Boston. Its apartment-style units with kitchenettes and in-unit laundry provide a degree of independence and comfort beyond a typical hotel. The contact-free, digital-first service model caters to modern travelers. However, it is imperative for prospective guests to carefully consider the practical implications of the "stair-only access" for most units and the potential for noise, particularly from commercial establishments on the ground floor. While the location on Newbury Street is undoubtedly a major draw, managing expectations regarding accessibility and potential disturbances is key to a satisfactory stay at this property.

May 06, 2025 · Bakhtiar WainProbably one of the worst "hotel" experiences I have ever had, in one of the most beautiful locations. Before I continue, it is important to point out that this review is specifically for room #21. If you get this room, your vacation has just drastically changed for the worse. We stayed there during the end of December. We arrived there after our flight at around 10 PM on a Monday. The street on which this hotel is located could not have been more beatiful. It was one of the placed to be in Boston. Shopping, food and parks all in reach. On arrival, first we noticed an elevator in the middle of our living room. When entering the bedroom, the floor was very very cold, as the windows couldn't be shut properly, allowing the very cold Boston winds to enter easily. We thought to solve this the next day, and moved the matress to the living room, since it was impossible to sleep at that temperature, After a few minutes, we noticed loud music coming from the evelavtor shaft. It actually sounded like somebody was listening to music in our own living room. On contacting the hotel via their app, I got a quick reply saying that there was already a complaint and that they would "send security" and find out where the noise was coming from. It then stopped at around 11 PM. The next day at around 10 AM, the sound came back on. And even louder than the night before. After contacting them again, we were told the elevator leads to the "Shake Shack" restaurand below us which plays music from 10 AM to 11 PM pretty much every day. They "are not the restaurant so they couldn't change the volume". On asking whether we could change rooms, they told us everything is booked but that we "were happy to leave if we wanted", no refund, no other help. The fact that they knew about the restaurant music, proved that they clearly lied to us the night before when they "send security" and just wanted us to be quiet. They claimed there was a noise disclaimer on their website, but nowhere it said there was loud music in the living room from 10 AM to 11 PM. We stayed there for one night and changed hotel the next. We ended up paying half of what we payed there, stayed 2 streets to the south and had a wonderful experience at our new accomodation. All in all, the hotels location is beautiful and I think other rooms here offer a great stay. But to even offer this room #21 on their website should be illegal. This was one of the worst stays I've ever had and the customer support was rude and clearily, we weren't the first guests that complained about this room since it felt rehearsed what they were going to tell us next.
Jan 16, 2025 · M GI really liked this place. It's nice, quiet, bright and conveniently located. Bed was comfortable, shower's water pressure was awesome and the whole place just felt really clean. Communication was fine but not the best. It takes a while for a response. I'm not sure why everyone is complaining and surprised about the stairs and lack of elevator because it's loud and clear on the website. My only complaint is all but one outlet in the kitchen area works. You can't even get the plug in.
Jun 12, 2024 · Stacey BFor one adult and two children, this was an ideal location and setup for a visit to Boston. Newbury street is indeed hopping. Which is fabulous in the daytime, but potentially a noise issue at night. I bought earplugs, which solved the issue of thumping club music at 10:30p. The kitchen is immaculate and bedroom bed very cozy and soft. The sofa bed is a great sofa - but the mattress was so bumpy (coils poking at your flesh) that I asked for an extra duvet to use as a mattress cover, which they promptly brought to us. Overall: we felt safe, the apartment is minimalist chic, and service very responsive. I would return again for sure.
Jun 27, 2024 · Olivia JoffreyLocation was super great. Furnishings were spartan for sure but not misrepresented in listing. A reading chair would have been a nice add. Unit was spacious. Only true misrepresentation was the indication of an elevator. True there was one but not available for use by most guests. So we had to lug luggage up and down stairs.
