If you know what to expect and are prepared it's a place to sleep that's free. It's a cross between an old YMCA and a army barracks. It's old and seen better days. No staff on weekends or after working hours. Just be prepared to bring everything with you. They don't provide anything - not even shower soap. If your coming in by shuttle there's no place close for food or supplies so prepare accordingly. They do have a kitchen you can cook in if you bring all food stuffs necessary and feel up to it . The rooms are decently clean and towels for showers are provided . The staff mostly stay in the office and aren't expected to offer any assistance. Off hours check in at hospital with security for a key. If an extended stay staff offer meals on wheels (馃あ馃ぎ)

Huntington House Introduce

When searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" in the Boston area, it's important to recognize that not all lodging options fit the conventional hotel mold. Huntington House, situated at the VA Medical Center, 150 S Huntington Ave STE 377, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130, USA, serves a very specific and vital purpose: providing free, temporary lodging for eligible VA patients and their caregivers who are receiving outpatient medical treatment at any of the VA Boston Healthcare System campuses. While it differs significantly from a commercial hotel, understanding its unique environment, services, and features is crucial for those it aims to serve. For inquiries, you can reach them at (857) 364-4087 or +1 857-364-4087.

Environment and Location:

Huntington House is located directly within the Jamaica Plain VA Medical Center campus. This means its environment is primarily that of a medical facility, not a leisure destination. Its primary advantage is its unparalleled proximity to VA Boston Healthcare System services. For patients and caregivers needing to be close to medical appointments, this location eliminates significant commuting burdens and costs associated with travel and parking in a metropolitan area like Boston. The Jamaica Plain VA Medical Center is a comprehensive facility offering a range of primary care and specialty services, including mental health, laser therapy, cancer treatment, and spinal cord injury treatment.

The surrounding area of Jamaica Plain offers some local amenities, but as noted by reviews, options for food and supplies immediately around Huntington House (especially if relying on hospital shuttles) can be limited. Guests should be prepared to bring their own provisions. Public transportation (MBTA) is likely accessible from the general VA Medical Center area, offering connections to wider Boston, but direct proximity to retail or dining might require a short walk or ride. The atmosphere within Huntington House itself is more akin to a community living space rather than a bustling hotel lobby, reflecting its mission to provide a supportive, rather than luxurious, stay.

Services and Amenities:

Huntington House is designed for practicality and essential comfort for its specific clientele. It offers private rooms in what is described as a "hotel-like setting," meaning individual sleeping spaces. Each room is furnished with basic necessities, including a bed, cable TV, an alarm clock, a telephone, and a refrigerator. It's important to note that some rooms may have shared bathrooms, so guests should inquire about this if a private bathroom is a necessity. Towels for showers are provided.

A significant amenity for guests is the availability of shared kitchen facilities on every floor, along with a dining area and lounge. This is a crucial feature, as meals and personal toiletries are generally not provided. Guests are expected to bring their own food, beverages, and personal hygiene items like shower soap. The kitchen allows for self-catering, which can be a considerable cost-saving measure for extended stays. However, as reviews indicate, guests must be prepared to supply all necessary foodstuffs and cooking ingredients themselves.

Additional practical amenities include laundry rooms on every other floor, which is essential for longer stays. Handicap accessible rooms are available upon request, demonstrating an effort to accommodate diverse needs. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the building, allowing guests to stay connected. There is also a computer available on the first floor for guest use. Free parking is offered on the medical center grounds, which is a significant benefit in Boston where parking can be expensive and scarce. A free VA shuttle service runs Monday-Friday, connecting Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury VA campuses, with specific morning shuttle availability from Huntington House for early appointments.

Features:

The defining feature of Huntington House is its core mission: to provide free, convenient, and comfortable lodging for Veterans and their caregivers while they receive outpatient medical treatment at VA Boston. Eligibility requirements are strict: Veterans must live at least 50 miles away from the VA Boston campus and be scheduled for a qualifying outpatient appointment. Additionally, Veterans must be able to care for themselves or bring an adult caregiver who is willing to share a room and provide necessary assistance throughout their stay. Minor children are generally not permitted.

Guest reviews characterize the facility as "a cross between an old YMCA and an army barracks," indicating a no-frills, functional approach to lodging. It's described as "old and seen better days," suggesting that while it provides a necessary service, it may lack modern aesthetics or luxurious comforts. The critical insight from reviews is the expectation of self-sufficiency: "Just be prepared to bring everything with you." This includes toiletries, food, and any personal equipment needed for a comfortable stay.

Staff availability is also a key feature to understand. Huntington House staff are typically available Monday-Friday, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Outside of these hours, including weekends and holidays, check-ins and assistance are handled by security personnel at the main hospital's Police Department service window. This means guests should plan their arrival and needs accordingly, especially for after-hours check-in, which involves contacting hospital security for a room key. One review also mentions that for extended stays, staff might offer "meals on wheels," though the specific details and quality of this service are not elaborated upon beyond a humorous, if unappetizing, comment.

Promotional Information and Guest Experience:

Huntington House is not marketed as a typical hotel, but rather as a critical support service for the Veteran community and their caregivers. Its primary "promotional" appeal lies in its fundamental benefit: free lodging for those undergoing medical treatment. This eliminates a significant financial burden and logistical challenge for many Veterans and their families, especially those traveling from rural areas or with limited financial resources. The ability to stay on-site, close to medical appointments, provides immense peace of mind and convenience during potentially stressful times.

The guest experience is shaped by these realities. Guests who "know what to expect and are prepared" find it to be a valuable and functional place to sleep. The comfortable beds and decent cleanliness of the rooms are generally appreciated. The shared kitchen, while requiring personal provisioning, offers autonomy and cost savings. While the facility might not offer the plush amenities or constant staff presence of a commercial hotel, its mission-driven approach to supporting Veterans makes it an invaluable resource. The ability to cook one's own meals and the provision of free parking and Wi-Fi are practical benefits that enhance the overall utility of a stay at Huntington House.

In summary, for eligible Veterans and their caregivers seeking accessible, free, and functional lodging directly within the VA Medical Center in Jamaica Plain, Huntington House provides an essential service. It offers a practical and supportive environment, allowing guests to focus on medical care without the added worry of lodging costs or distant commutes. Preparedness with personal supplies is key to a comfortable stay in this unique, community-focused facility. For more detailed information on eligibility and reservation procedures, contacting Huntington House directly at (857) 364-4087 or +1 857-364-4087 is recommended, or referring to the VA Boston Healthcare System's official resources.

The room was clean and comfortable. There are full kitchen facilities that are shared, but we had to ourselves. We were so thankful to have such a nice place to stay while my husband was being treated .
