3.0

60 Minutes featured the Carter on a segment about New York’s “welfare hotels” back in the 80s. It had floors for tourists and others for welfare recipients. Tourist rooms were similar to what they have today: spartan and geared toward the most budget-driven traveler. Those for welfare recipients had cockroaches crawling all over the place, women and children sleeping six or more to a tiny room and walls in a horrific dark color with mold everywhere. 60 Minutes attempted to address the pitfalls with management at the time, but they refused to respond or do anything. I highly recommend avoiding the place if only to punish management for their negligence over the years. They don’t deserve anyone’s custom. The place should be torn down and rebuilt if only to bury the past.

Hotel Carter Introduce

Information regarding Hotel Carter, located at 250 W 43rd St, in the Times Square area, is being presented under the 'Hotels Near Of Me' category. However, it is crucial for travelers from Taiwan to be aware of significant negative historical information associated with this property, based on available information online.

One review references a segment on the television program "60 Minutes" from the 1980s that featured the Carter Hotel as one of New York’s “welfare hotels.” According to this account, the hotel had separate floors for tourists and welfare recipients, with starkly contrasting conditions. Rooms for tourists were described as "spartan and geared toward the most budget-driven traveler," seemingly similar to their condition at the time of the review (though the date of the review is not specified). In contrast, the rooms designated for welfare recipients were described as having severe issues, including "cockroaches crawling all over the place," multiple women and children sleeping in tiny rooms, and walls with a "horrific dark color with mold everywhere."

The review further states that "60 Minutes" attempted to address these issues with the hotel management at the time, but they reportedly "refused to respond or do anything." Based on this historical information, the reviewer "highly recommend avoiding the place if only to punish management for their negligence over the years," asserting that they "don’t deserve anyone’s custom" and suggesting that the building "should be torn down and rebuilt if only to bury the past."

A second, much shorter review simply states, "I stayed here before when I was little with my mom, after taking Shortline from Ithaca to NYC Manhattan." This provides no information about the current state or quality of the hotel.

The provided information lacks details about the current environment, services, and features of Hotel Carter. Given the age and severity of the issues raised in the more detailed review, and the absence of recent positive feedback in this context, it is impossible to provide an objective overview of what travelers might currently expect. There is also no information regarding promotional offers.

In conclusion, the available information regarding Hotel Carter includes a concerning historical account of severely substandard conditions and negligent management. While one person recalls a past stay, there is no information provided about the hotel's current state. Travelers from Taiwan considering this hotel should be aware of this information and are strongly advised to conduct extensive additional research from more recent sources to ascertain the current conditions and reputation of Hotel Carter before making any booking decisions. The information provided suggests a significant potential for a negative experience.

I was worried when I read the other reviews. I spent two nights the weekend before Christmas and I must say I was impressed. You want luxury... go waste your money elsewhere. This hotel served it's purpose: someplace to rest your head after a long night in the city. Clean, pleasant smelling room, with a comfy bed, no bed bugs, a clean bathroom and plenty of hot water. The staff was pleasant. I will definitely be using this place again. I believe the other negative reviews were just over exaggerated. Trust me you will not be disappointed. There is even a cozy cafe with bargain prices for breakfast. I give it five stars because I feel it was worth every penny being that it was smack in the middle of Manhattan, the room/bathroom was clean and the staff was pleasant. Thank You Hotel Carter... see you again very soon !!!!!

It was a room... Calling it a ghetto piece of S@$T would be disrespectful to ghettos. One of our rooms had a "TV" slightly larger than a laptop and static when trying to watch any of the channels. Washroom medicine cabinet was broken so it wouldn't stay closed. There were stains on the blankets. Hotel staff was rude and unhelpful. Door handles were slimy, the carpets hadn't been vacuumed, the toilets sprayed.... The contents when flushed. The only truth to the hotels website/description is that it is indeed close to times square. Do not recommend unless the place gets demolished.
