We decided on New Orleans for our Birthday- versary trip this year celebrating my birthday and our anniversary. Hubby chose Hyatt due to the location and proximity to restaurants and activities. The hotel lobby area is warm and welcoming with plenty of seating, which was helpful as we arrived early and were not able to be accommodated for early check-in. This is no way the fault of the hotel. We routinely fly early in the morning and most places can accommodate and I understand this is base on availability. We did have a nice meal and cool place to wait for our room. The hotel takes up an entire city block , with the west side facing Bourbon Street. We were on the opposite side and only had to deal with traffic noise, which was expected . If we stay again, we’re going to request a pool or courtyard view. I throughly enjoyed my stay and time in New Orleans. I look forward to coming back with my girls. Pros: Spacious comfortable rooms Firm beds Friendly staff Cons: Pillows too soft I could not really enjoy the balcony due to cigarette and weed smoking. The balcony is shared with your neighbors, so no privacy.

Hyatt Centric Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For those of us here in Louisiana, New Orleans holds a special place in our hearts. Whether it's for a romantic getaway, a lively celebration with friends, or simply to immerse ourselves in the unique culture of the French Quarter, finding the right place to stay makes all the difference. The Hyatt Centric in New Orleans offers a compelling blend of prime location, modern comfort, and classic New Orleans charm, making it an excellent choice for a local escape.

Located right on Canal Street, this Hyatt property is more than just a place to lay your head; it’s designed to be a vibrant hub that connects you directly to the pulse of the city. Housed within the beautifully restored D.H. Holmes department store, it combines historical homage with contemporary design. Guests consistently choose this hotel for its "location and proximity to restaurants and activities," highlighting its convenience for experiencing the best of the Crescent City. While some experiences may vary, the general consensus points to spacious rooms, firm beds, and friendly staff, all contributing to a thoroughly enjoyable stay. For us Louisiana locals, it’s an opportunity to embrace the spirit of New Orleans with comfort and ease.

Location and Accessibility

The Hyatt Centric New Orleans boasts an enviable address at 819 Canal St, New Orleans, LA 70112, USA. This location is a significant draw for guests, as it places you directly at the intersection of the historic French Quarter and the bustling Central Business District (CBD), offering immediate access to a wealth of New Orleans experiences.

Being on Canal Street means you are literally steps away from the iconic French Quarter. One side of the hotel even faces Bourbon Street, putting you right at the edge of the city's most famous nightlife and entertainment hub. This proximity allows for effortless exploration of the French Quarter's charming streets, historical landmarks like Jackson Square, unique shops, and world-renowned dining. Guests appreciate that it’s chosen "due to the location and proximity to restaurants and activities."

Beyond the French Quarter, the hotel's central location on Canal Street provides excellent accessibility to various other attractions. You're well-positioned to catch the historic streetcars, which run along Canal Street and can take you further into the CBD, to the Garden District, or to other parts of the city. The Caesars Superdome and Smoothie King Center are a short ride or walk away, making it convenient for sporting events and concerts. The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and the Mississippi Riverfront are also easily accessible.

For those of us driving in from other parts of Louisiana, the hotel offers convenient parking options. They provide valet parking for $45 plus tax daily for a standard car, and $50 plus tax for an SUV, with the added benefit of "free in/out privileges 24 hours." This service is crucial in a busy city like New Orleans. There's also self-parking available at the DH Holmes Parking at 811 Iberville Street, with rates varying (around $40 for up to 24 hours), though it "does not include in-out access." The hotel takes up an entire city block, making it a prominent and easily identifiable landmark for navigation. Its strategic position ensures that whether you're exploring on foot, using public transport, or driving, your New Orleans adventure starts with ease.

Features / Highlights

The Hyatt Centric New Orleans stands out with several features and highlights that enhance the guest experience:

  • Prime French Quarter Adjacent Location: This is arguably the biggest highlight. The hotel occupies an entire city block right on Canal Street, with its west side facing Bourbon Street. This allows for unparalleled access to the French Quarter's attractions, dining, and nightlife, while still providing a distinct hotel experience.
  • Historic Building with Modern Design: Housed in the beautifully "revived and reimagined" D.H. Holmes department store, the hotel blends classic architecture with sleek, modern interior design. Guest rooms are "chic, spacious," and pay homage to the historic venue.
  • Spacious and Comfortable Rooms: Guests consistently praise the "spacious comfortable rooms" with "firm beds." Many rooms feature 12ft ceilings and a "fashion-forward color palette." While some rooms may be smaller than expected (e.g., corner rooms without a desk as in one review), the general feedback points to comfort.
  • Secluded Courtyard Pool & Oasis: A significant amenity, the outdoor pool in a "secluded courtyard" offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle. It comes complete with a poolside bar (Casting Call Bar, seasonal), sun loungers, and umbrellas, providing a relaxing oasis.
  • Multiple On-Site Dining Options: With Holmes Café, Holmes Bar, the renowned Red Fish Grill, and the Hard Rock Café, guests have a wide array of dining choices without leaving the hotel. This variety caters to different tastes and times of day.
  • Friendly and Helpful Staff: Numerous reviews commend the "friendly staff," with specific mentions of the "personable, enthusiastic, and very helpful" valet attendants and bellhops, ensuring a warm welcome and assistance.
  • Various Room Views: Guests can request different views, including those facing Bourbon Street (which may be noisy), traffic noise-expected street views, or quieter "pool or courtyard view" rooms.
  • Pet-Friendly Policy: For those traveling with canine companions, the hotel welcomes dogs, making it a convenient option for pet owners.
  • Dedicated Wellness Facilities: A 24-hour fitness center with modern equipment, including Peloton bikes, is available for guests to maintain their routines.

Note on Guest Concerns: While generally positive, some guest feedback noted "pillows too soft," and issues with shared balconies leading to cigarette and weed smoke intrusion, affecting privacy. One detailed review mentioned a room being "smaller than I expected," lack of an advertised desk and bathrobes, a sink draining slowly, a shower not fully turning off, and noise from the housekeeping landing. Service at the lobby bar was also cited as slow. It's important to note these are individual experiences and not necessarily indicative of every stay, but provide a factual representation of varied guest feedback.

The Hyatt is my preferred hotel choice wherever I go- I worked for the company directly/indirectly for 12 years. Because of my experience working there, it’s possible that my expectations and standards might be a bit higher than the typical guest. That said, I love the company and will continue to stay with them regardless of this particular stay failing to meet my expectations. We’d never been to New Orleans, and we chose this particular Hyatt based on the location, it’s proximity to other activities we had planned was appealing. The website photos of the rooms and amenities had us very excited. The valet attendant (Saddam, I think?) and the bellman especially (can’t remember his name, African-American gentlemen) were personable, enthusiastic, and very helpful. The front desk agent wasn’t unfriendly, just wasn’t very personable- I generally am very chatty with the staff at these places, but she didn’t seem interested in talking to me. After asking us “you wanted a king room, right? Is a courtyard view ok?” we got checked in and headed upstairs. The room we got checked in to was smaller than I expected - not that I splurged on a suite or anything, but it says the rooms should have a desk, which this one didn’t. It was a corner room, directly next to the housekeeping landing/service elevator- the constant noise from carts being rolled in and out of there, along with the staff chatting/laughing was a detractor for sure during the daytime. The room was advertised to have bathrobes available also, and it didn’t. The sink didn’t drain properly, nor did the shower turn off all the way. None of this was that big of deal- but it just was a culmination of these little things that took away from the experience. We ate at the lobby bar for some appetizers one night. There was a bartender and a waiter working, and it wasn’t terribly busy. It took 12 minutes to be greeted, another 11 minutes for our drinks to come and 41 minutes for our appetizers. We were on vacation, not in a rush, but it just was another little thing that wasn’t quite right compared to other Hyatt stays. Again, nothing majorly wrong - just nothing quite seemed like it “was up to snuff”.

Business stay, so it was as acceptable room for a night's sleep, but I wouldn't stay with family or for a vacation. Noise from the street was very evident on the 4th floor. The big drawback to me was the room furnishings. The room wasn't decorated as you'd expect from Hyatt, almost like random fixtures and furniture were thrown together to create the decor. Some furniture pieces needed retired, others only got in the way (like that lamp over the small loveseat). There were no chairs, so I brought in the patio chair from the balcony just to sit and watch tv. The only place to really sit and relax (sort of) was the loveseat, but it was Impossible to watch the TV while seated there. Ample space for a chair in the king/balcony room. The balcony is shared with the next room, so security should be considered. The bathroom design wasn't thought out well either. It was narrow and with the corners of the vanity top, you had to be aware of where you walked or turned. The bathroom door didnt fully open because it hit the bowed shower curtain rod. Maybe the building used to be something else and it was renovated into a hotel? Downstairs, the bar service was a bit slow, seemingly understaffed, with only 6 people sitting at the bar on the first night, but second night service was much better. The front desk check-in staff were great though. Breakfast tasted great...simple but good! Dinner spinach salad with chicken and added grilled shrimp and cornbread was outstanding! I was happily surprised how really good the food was.

The stay was very pleasant. The staff was helpful and the rooms were clean. We loved the pool area and the kids just enjoyed to the fullest.. The breakfast had to be ordered from the Toby restaurant and they were very quick to prepare. The front desk was very quick and always there to make our stay the best. We traveled with the kids, the location is perfect.

There was nothing stated about the hotel being under construction. We booked 3 nights. Stayed one night, the bed was so uncomfortable we had a terrible nights sleep. Furthermore they put us in a room directly above the aforementioned construction and we’re awakened by banging and the room literally vibrating from a saw or something. We sent a message in the middle of the night and then called first thing in the morning to see if the had another room and perhaps a softer mattress. They informed us that all the beds were the same so we decided to check out. Since they have a 24hr cancellation notice the rude front desk lady said she had to charge us for two nights. How would we be able to give 24 hours notice after one night of being uncomfortable having not stayed there yet?! Crazy. We then had to wait for the manager to arrive at noon to handle the situation ( she did thankfully), but we missed reservations having to repack our bags to leave the hotel and wait for the manager. Terrible experience.
