The bolt on the door was unlevel and wouldn't bolt the door. Basically, I'm in an unlocked room. I don't recommend this place to anyone. I was told it would not be fixed. Reply to owner: Your hotel received one star because the manager told me that she would not fix it because it would just have to be fixed again next week (her words). That is when I gave the one star review. If the manager would have fixed it, I would have raised the score because the other staff are very nice. The hotel needs a manager that is friendly and cares about customer needs. I know that she wrote the reply to my original review because she typed her name. I'm paying to stay here and I should feel safe. The one star rating will not be raised due to the manager's attitude and lack of effort. I know the manager is not the owner, but acting like she is the owner. As I previously wrote, I do not recommend this hotel.

St. Charles Inn - Hotel Superior Introduce

Hello, fellow Louisianans! When planning a visit to the vibrant heart of New Orleans, whether for a staycation, hosting out-of-town guests, or attending a local event, finding the right accommodation is key. You want a place that offers convenience, a taste of local charm, and a comfortable base for your adventures. Today, we're taking a closer look at the St. Charles Inn - Hotel Superior, a spot that places you right on one of New Orleans' most famous avenues.

The St. Charles Inn positions itself as a practical and accessible option for those looking to explore the city without breaking the bank. Located directly on the historic St. Charles Avenue, it offers guests a chance to immerse themselves in the Uptown atmosphere, known for its beautiful mansions, oak-lined streets, and iconic streetcar. While it provides a basic and functional lodging experience, it’s worth understanding all aspects of what a stay here entails to ensure it aligns with your expectations.

Location and Accessibility

The St. Charles Inn - Hotel Superior boasts a truly prime location at 3636 St Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA 70115, USA. For any local, the significance of this address is immediate: you are directly on the route of the historic St. Charles Avenue streetcar. This is a monumental advantage, as the streetcar offers one of the most charming and affordable ways to explore a vast swath of New Orleans.

From the hotel, you can hop on the streetcar and easily reach major attractions. Travel uptown to explore the beautiful Audubon Park and Zoo, ideal for a leisurely afternoon. Head downtown, and within minutes, you'll find yourself in the heart of the bustling French Quarter, where live music, world-class dining, and historic landmarks await. The Central Business District, with its museums, theaters, and event venues, is also easily accessible by streetcar.

The hotel is nestled in the picturesque Uptown Garden District, an area famed for its stunning antebellum mansions and lush gardens, perfect for a leisurely stroll. You’ll also find numerous local restaurants, cafes, and boutiques within walking distance, offering a true neighborhood experience away from the main tourist crowds. For those driving, the availability of onsite parking, even if it can be limited at times as noted by a past guest, is a valuable amenity in New Orleans. However, it's always wise to have a backup plan for parking, especially during peak seasons or events.

Services Offered

The St. Charles Inn - Hotel Superior aims to provide a straightforward and comfortable stay with a focus on essential amenities.

  • Complimentary Breakfast: Start your day with a complimentary breakfast, offering a convenient and cost-effective way to fuel up before exploring the city. One guest noted the breakfast was "okay, no complaints."

  • Free WiFi: Stay connected with complimentary wireless internet access available throughout the hotel.

  • Onsite Parking: The hotel offers onsite parking, a valuable feature in New Orleans, though availability can sometimes be a challenge as one reviewer mentioned.

  • Air Conditioning: All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a necessity for comfort in Louisiana's climate.

  • Pet-Tolerant Accommodations: The hotel states it is "pet friendly" online, though a recent review clarifies this as more "pet tolerant," with a policy stating dogs cannot bark. It is advised to clarify pet policies directly with the hotel prior to booking if traveling with a pet.

  • 24-Hour Front Desk: The presence of a 24-hour front desk ensures that staff are available for check-in, check-out, and to address guest inquiries, although guest experiences with evening staff attitudes have varied.

  • Elevator Access: The hotel provides elevator access to upper floors, though a review noted a temporary breakdown, which can be inconvenient, especially with mobility issues or heavy luggage.

  • In-Room Amenities: Rooms typically include flat-screen TVs and basic bathroom essentials. Some rooms may feature a mini-fridge, though its placement within a dresser was noted as unusual by one guest.

Features / Highlights

While a more budget-friendly option, the St. Charles Inn does offer some key features that could appeal to certain travelers.

  • Historic St. Charles Avenue Location: Its most significant highlight is undeniably its address directly on the iconic St. Charles Avenue, offering easy access to the streetcar and a picturesque neighborhood.

  • Charming Exterior: The hotel's exterior likely blends with the historic architecture of the Uptown area, providing a visually appealing presence on the avenue.

  • Essential Amenities for Value: It provides fundamental hotel amenities like breakfast, WiFi, and parking, focusing on delivering value for its price point.

However, based on customer feedback, it's important to be aware of some reported issues that prospective guests should consider:

  • Room Maintenance Issues: Past guests have reported various maintenance concerns including unboltable doors, continuously running bathroom vents/lights, broken sink drains, and damaged furniture. It's advisable to inspect your room upon arrival and promptly report any issues.

  • Staff Consistency: While some front desk staff, particularly in the morning, have been praised for being "very friendly and polite," others, especially in the evening, have been described as having an "I'm over it" attitude.

  • Pet Policy Nuance: The pet-friendly claim might require further clarification, as the "dogs cannot bark" rule could be challenging for pet owners.

  • Single Elevator: The hotel relies on a single elevator, which, when out of order, can pose significant inconvenience, especially for guests on higher floors or with heavy luggage/pets.

  • Carbon Monoxide Alarm Incidents: One guest reported a carbon monoxide alarm going off as a false alarm, which, while potentially harmless, can be alarming.

Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Locals

For us Louisianans, particularly those planning a New Orleans getaway or needing to house visitors, the St. Charles Inn - Hotel Superior presents a very specific set of advantages and considerations.

Its primary draw, without a doubt, is its location directly on St. Charles Avenue. This is a huge plus for anyone looking to experience New Orleans authentically and efficiently. You're not stuck in a car or constantly calling for rideshares. The streetcar, literally at your doorstep, offers a charming and incredibly convenient way to explore everything from the lush Garden District to the vibrant French Quarter and beyond. For locals who know the city, this accessibility is invaluable, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the unique rhythm of New Orleans easily.

For families or those on a budget, the complimentary breakfast can be a real money-saver, helping to cut down on dining expenses. While basic, it ensures a convenient start to your day. The onsite parking, despite potential limitations, is also a significant benefit in a city where parking can be both scarce and expensive.

However, it's crucial for locals to set realistic expectations based on past guest experiences. The hotel seems to offer a more budget-friendly approach, which sometimes comes with compromises in maintenance and service consistency. If you're someone who prioritizes a pristine, flawlessly maintained room and always-stellar customer service above all else, you might want to consider alternative options or ensure you inspect your room thoroughly upon arrival. The "pet-friendly" policy, as noted by a reviewer, might be more accurately described as "pet-tolerant," so if you're bringing a barking canine companion, be aware of their specific rules.

Ultimately, the St. Charles Inn - Hotel Superior is best suited for locals or their guests who prioritize location and affordability above all else. It's a practical base for exploring the city, especially if you plan to spend most of your time out and about, leveraging the iconic streetcar. It offers the essentials for a New Orleans adventure, allowing you to save your budget for the city's incredible food, music, and unique experiences. It’s a no-frills option that gets you right where you need to be to soak up the true spirit of our beloved Crescent City.

A few issues with the room. First, they say online that they're pet friendly. But when you check in with said pet, they give you a piece of paper that says dogs cannot bark. So..my dog can't be a dog? Dogs bark... It's hard enough to find decent pet friendly hotels - maybe a dedicated floor/room cluster to dogs? Id say it's more "pet tolerant" than "pet friendly." The onsite parking was full the first night so we had to go park elsewhere and come down to the lobby to hope for a key fob the next day. Additionally, if you book on Expedia: they don't allow you to add the dogs to your stay, and don't offer the dog-tolerant rooms specifically online. So, upon check in, we learned we booked a larger room and so they didn't charge us for the dogs because we'd overpaid - but didn't disclose how much we overpaid. A few things in the room were broken: the bathroom vent ran constantly and a light stayed on the whole time because they're on the same timer which can't be turned off. The front sink was broken and wouldn't drain. And the middle leg on our dresser was broken due to some water damage from the fridge. I've never seen a fridge stored in a dresser, but I guess with limited space they're making it work? Our carbon monoxide alarm went off in the middle of the night and I guess it was a false alarm? Also the elevator broke down, and there's just one, so I had to carry my 15yr old, 45lb dog up 3 flights of stairs for a day. Breakfast was okay, no complaints. Front desk staff in the morning: very friendly and polite. Front desk staff in the evening: had an "I'm over it" attitude each time, and weren't very friendly. Always had his air pods in so we couldn't even tell if he was fully listening to our conversation.

The facility was clean but very old. The elevator is tiny, and while the website boasts to be pet friendly the staff are not. They are discourteous to your pets and complain when they bark. Dogs do bark and the sounds of a hotel can trigger that. Especially when cleaning staff closet is off of your room and someone is in there moving around. The air conditioning was somewhat effective. The bathroom was clean and the bedding was clean. Overall the room was nice and hotel was clean, my issue was with the hotel staff especially the older concierge she acted very affronted by anything you did. Every-time she saw me walking in or out with my dog she gave me a disapproving look. She made my stay uncomfortable and was rude to her staff she was training the day I checked in. It was the girls first day and she was rude to her and acted as though checking me in was a problem for her. I expect staff to be friendly and kind to there guest not act like your a nuisance when your paying to stay there.

The hotel offers a quiet, comfortable stay in a neighborhood that is lovely to take strolls. Lots of nice things to do nearby, such as the beautiful wine house close by. Streetcar is definitely a big plus too, to go to the French Quarter or to Oak Street. The rooms were clean, breakfast was decent for continental. I wish they had water fountains so that we wouldn’t have to look out for room service to get more water, but this is just one small thing. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and we would definitely stay here again.

Our first time in NOLA so we did not want to stay in a chain hotel. The St Charles Inn was perfect. It has an old world NOLA charm and is so cozy and convenient to everything. The front desk staff was friendly and efficient. Our room was clean, the beds were comfy and our housekeeper (Tammy) was very attentive and wonderful to chat with. This place is right on the trolley line to the French quarter and it has a Mexican restaurant attached with great food and drinks!
