We came upon this property following an unfortunate series of events at our previous rental. After a sewer line ruptured and water was cut off from the house, our family of 11 was desperately in need of a new rental property. An online search yielded "The Briars." An email and a few phone calls later, and Lance, our host, was arranging for our use of the house the next day. The home, itself, is an incredible piece of history. Previously serving as a bed-and-breakfast, it is appropriately appointed to sleep 20. Our family of 11 found plenty of space, including three children under the age of 10 who loved the bunk bed setups. There are bathrooms galore and the dining area was comfortable enough to seat everyone during meal times. This is hard to accomplish and a welcomed amenity for us! A short walk away was a family-friendly beach, as well as interesting walks along the York River, The Briars sits on the corner of a main road and a darling cross-street with views of the York River. Just a short drive away from downtown York, the area is abundant with historic homes and properties. The front porch is a comfortable seating area for the family outside (great for reading or napping). A recently installed fire pit also makes for a great hangout spot in the evening. What really set this property apart from other rentals was our host, Lance (or "Joe"). From our first conversation, he was sympathetic to our family's situation and extremely welcoming as we made use of his property. Whether just popping around the corner to check in, sending a text to let me know about something awesome that was happening, or just allowing us the opportunity to relax and enjoy our vacation, Lance made sure that our family truly got to appreciate the area and its adventures. He was a wealth of knowledge, as he grew up in the area, and a phenomenal resource. He happened to spot two bald eagles in a tree while he was out and texted me to let me know of the opportunity to see them in the wild - just two minutes down the road! These tidbits of information led to fantastic experiences and helped us create family memories from this trip. Stay here in comfort and relax. Take the time to enjoy your vacation. The Briars and Lance makes this happen, and it was the best!
Welcome to "Hotels Near Of Me," your comprehensive guide to accommodations that offer convenience and comfort. The Briars boasts an enviable location that perfectly blends accessibility with picturesque tranquility. Nestled on the corner of a main road and a delightful cross-street, the property offers captivating views of the serene York River. This vantage point provides a constant connection to the natural beauty of the area, allowing guests to witness the ebb and flow of river life right from their doorstep. Additionally, the immediate vicinity offers interesting walks along the York River, perfect for a morning stroll or an evening ramble. The property itself is surrounded by the rich history of York, with abundant historic homes and properties populating the area. This creates an immersive environment that transports guests back in time, allowing them to appreciate the architectural heritage and enduring charm of this New England town. While offering a sense of peaceful retreat, The Briars is also conveniently located just a short drive away from downtown York, ensuring easy access to its shops, restaurants, and other local attractions. The front porch of The Briars serves as a comfortable outdoor seating area, ideal for unwinding, enjoying a good book, or even catching a peaceful nap amidst the fresh air. For evening enjoyment, a recently installed fire pit provides a perfect gathering spot, inviting guests to share stories and create lasting memories under the stars.
Originally operating as a bed-and-breakfast, The Briars has been thoughtfully appointed to comfortably sleep a significant number of guests, with a capacity to accommodate up to 20 individuals. This makes it an exceptional choice for large families, multi-generational gatherings, or groups of friends traveling together. The generous number of bedrooms ensures privacy and personal space for everyone, and guests frequently commend the comfort of the beds, promising a restful night's sleep after a day of exploration. For families with younger children, the presence of bunk bed setups, as noted by a family of 11, proves to be a delightful feature, adding a touch of adventure for the little ones. The property boasts a remarkable abundance of bathrooms, a crucial amenity for larger groups, significantly reducing wait times and enhancing overall convenience. The dining area is another highlight, designed to comfortably seat everyone during meal times. This is a particularly valued feature for large groups, as finding a single space to accommodate everyone for communal meals can often be a challenge in other rental properties. In terms of practical amenities, The Briars offers plenty of parking spaces, alleviating any concerns about vehicle accommodation for multiple cars. For those seeking a moment of quiet contemplation or a picturesque vista, the third-floor balcony provides a nice view of the river, offering a serene escape. Furthermore, the property allows for engaging group activities, as evidenced by one guest's experience, highlighting its suitability for communal enjoyment.
While The Briars offers a unique and spacious experience, it's important to provide a balanced overview based on real customer feedback. One glowing review highlights the exceptional flexibility and welcoming nature of the host, Lance (also known as Joe). This particular family's experience, following an unforeseen emergency with a previous rental, underscores Lance's empathetic approach and willingness to accommodate their urgent need for new lodging. His proactive communication, offering local insights like spotting bald eagles just two minutes down the road, greatly enhanced their trip, leading to fantastic experiences and cherished family memories. This personal touch, coupled with Lance's deep knowledge of the area, truly sets The Briars apart for many guests, creating a vacation experience that goes beyond just a place to stay. The review emphasizes the comfort and relaxation The Briars facilitates, suggesting that "The Briars and Lance makes this happen, and it was the best!"
However, another review offers a more critical perspective, particularly regarding property management and technical amenities. While acknowledging the house's historic charm and coziness, along with the comfortable beds and ample parking, some significant areas for improvement were noted. One concern raised was regarding privacy, with the upkeep/maintenance individual allegedly entering the house with potential renters while the current guests were engaged in group activities. Additionally, an allegation of rude and racist behavior from the upkeep/maintenance person was made, specifically that he would ignore non-Caucasian individuals and communicate only with Caucasians. These are serious concerns that prospective renters should be aware of. Regarding connectivity, the review points out a significant lack of cellular reception, with Verizon and AT&T signals being scarce, and only parts of the third floor having Verizon reception. More critically, the house's WiFi was described as largely unusable. With 15 people, more than half were reportedly rejected from connecting to the router, and for those who did connect, the internet speed was so slow that even emails couldn't be sent. A picture provided by the reviewer showed the only router in the house, located behind the living room TV, with the internet connection indicator not lit up. Furthermore, the WiFi signal reportedly did not cover the kitchen, parts of the second floor, and the entire third floor. Practical issues with the house itself included second-floor bathroom doors not properly shutting (preventing the bolt-lock mechanism from engaging) and some bedroom doors making loud cracking noises when shut, which could be disruptive to sleeping guests at night. These points of feedback are vital for prospective guests to consider when evaluating The Briars as a suitable accommodation option.
In conclusion, The Briars presents a compelling option for those seeking a spacious, historic, and conveniently located vacation rental in York, Maine, particularly for large groups. Its unique environment, ample amenities, and the potential for exceptional host interaction (as highlighted by one guest) offer a memorable New England experience. However, potential guests should also be mindful of the reported challenges regarding privacy, management interactions, and connectivity, as these factors could significantly impact their stay. We recommend contacting the property directly to clarify any concerns before booking, ensuring your stay at The Briars meets your expectations for a comfortable and enjoyable getaway.

Aug 21, 2017 · Sean HackbarthThis historic house is nice and cozy, but the management needs serious improvement. Pros: (1) Lots of bedrooms, comfortable beds (2) Plenty of parking spaces, (3) Nice view of the river from the 3rd floor balcony Cons: (1) The upkeep/maintenance guy does not have any respect for our privacy. After we properly checked into the house, he stormed into the house with random potential renters and toured around while we are engaging in group activities. The upkeep/maintenance guy is also very rude/racist, he would ignore anybody that is not Caucasian, by-passing them and talks to the Caucasians behind. (2) This house barely has any cellular reception ( Verizon, and AT&T). Only parts of the third floor have Verizon reception. (3) This house has no usable WiFi. There are 15 of us and more than half of us are rejected of a connection to the router, and for those of us who connected, internet was so slow that even emails couldn't get sent. I uploaded a picture of the only router in the house, it's behind the TV in living room, the indicator for internet connection is not lit up. Moreover, the WiFi signal was not covering the Kitchen, parts of the second floor, and the entire 3rd floor. (4) Second floor bathroom doors won't properly shut (to engage the bolt-lock mechanism), a few bedroom doors make a loud cracking noise while shutting, this is annoying to the sleeping ones while some of us make a trip to the bathroom at night.
