I had the honor of being the first guest at the start of the 2024 season. My stay was amazing. Excellent food, comfy beds, warm and friendly host. The island is gorgeous, I loved walking the trails on the cliffs and by the ocean and then returning to my cozy room (with a nice view!) every afternoon. Highly recommend staying here.

Unique Features and Island Experiences: More Than Just a Stay

The Monhegan House offers a distinctive blend of hotel features and immersive island experiences. Its historic nature, dating back to 1870, makes it an integral part of Monhegan Island's rich history and enduring tradition of hospitality. The individually decorated rooms with antiques and plush bedding provide a cozy and authentic New England inn experience.

A standout feature is "Nite Nite Fatty's," operating right on the Monhegan House porch. This beloved spot offers homemade cakes, pies, and cookies fresh from the oven, providing the "best dessert and the best vibe on the Island" according to guests. It’s described as a "One Stop Picnic Shop" and offers ice cream too.

The Monhegan House's location on Monhegan Island itself is a primary feature. Monhegan is a small, rocky island approximately 10 miles off the coast of Maine, accessible only by boat. It's a walking island, with no cars or paved roads, encouraging exploration on foot. The island is renowned for its wild beauty, with over 350 acres protected by the Monhegan Associates, a land trust that maintains 9 miles of hiking trails. These trails lead to dramatic cliff views, secluded coves, and dense forests, offering endless opportunities for nature lovers, birdwatchers (especially during migratory seasons), and artists.

Monhegan Island has a long-standing reputation as an artist colony, attracting painters like Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent, and George Bellows. The island continues to inspire artists, with numerous studios and galleries to explore, including the Monhegan Museum of Art & History housed in the lighthouse keeper's cottage. Guests of The Monhegan House can easily access these artistic and natural attractions, making their stay a holistic experience of island life.

For those who love the sea, the lighthouse beacon provides a comforting presence at night, visible from many rooms. The sounds of the waves crashing against the shore and the fresh ocean air are integral to the Monhegan House experience, creating a deeply sensory and relaxing atmosphere. The island's general store, church, and library offer a glimpse into the tight-knit island community.

This is definitely a place I'd like to keep all to myself, but this needs to be your next destination!! I cannot say enough good things about the Monhegan House. First off, the owner Melanie and staff are outstanding!! Extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful!! Sitting on the front porch and relaxing after an incredible meal (be it breakfast or dinner!!) is a must-do activity. And speaking of the porch, Nite Nite Fatty's has THE BEST dessert and the best vibe on the Island. I love sitting in my room at night, watching the beacon high atop the hill in the lighthouse, listening to the waves, and breathing the fresh ocean air. Every morning, experiencing a different breakfast is an amazing way to start the day before setting out on a hike to Pulpit Rock or Lobster Cove. The Monhegan House is an integral part of any visit to the island!!!

The Monhegan House is a welcoming, joyful place on a beautiful, rugged, rustic island lost in time. The MOHO accomodations are clean, bright and cheery, comfortable, and the food is plentiful and delicious. Melanie goes out of her way to make guests feel like family and does her best to accommodate special requests.

Disclaimer: we did not stay here, but we absolutely will next time. We had a booking scare on the island and thought we were going to be without a room, and they were our problem solvers! Melanie and her staff were incredibly kind, welcoming, and engaging. Their breakfast pastries were the best, and she’s always hosting fun events. The lobby and parlor are warm and promote interaction with other folks.

Cannot speak highly enough of this inn. Clean as a whistle (including shared toilet rooms and showers). And most of all-so much fun! There’s a jovial spirit amongst the owners and employees. A rocking chair filled porch, games to be played, a library, and coffee and tea always available.
