Stayed at The Liberty Hotel and found it to be quite ordinary overall. 1. Room – Comfortable, but the sheets weren’t fitted properly. That said, I still slept really well. 2. Food – Great quality, but service was slow. My fries took 45 minutes, though they were delicious when they finally arrived. 3. Gym – Disappointing. Feels like they brought equipment from home—definitely not what you expect from a “luxury” hotel. More of a decent business hotel (good, not great). 4. Check-in – Friendly staff, offered me champagne. When I declined, I was told, “I get paid to ask that.” Strange response. 5. No in-room menu – Surprising for a hotel at this price point. 6. Overall – Very, very ordinary. Not bad, but definitely not luxury.

The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Boston Introduce

For discerning travelers seeking "Hotels Near Of Me" in Boston, The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel, stands as a truly iconic and unforgettable destination. Located at 215 Charles Street, Boston, MA 02114, USA, with a phone contact at (617) 224-4000 or +1 617-224-4000, this hotel is much more than a place to stay; it's a piece of Boston's rich history dramatically transformed into a beacon of modern luxury and vibrant social life.

The hotel is housed within the former Charles Street Jail, a National Historic Landmark built in 1851. Its imaginative transformation, completed in 2007, has meticulously preserved the striking architectural elements of the original structure, blending them seamlessly with contemporary design and amenities. This unique heritage imbues The Liberty with an unparalleled character, making it a truly distinctive presence in Boston's hospitality landscape.

Environment: Where History Meets Urban Chic

The environment of The Liberty Hotel is a captivating blend of historical grandeur and bustling urban energy. Its most striking feature is the dramatic 90-foot central atrium, which was once the jail's rotunda. Soaring ceilings, preserved granite walls, and original architectural details create a breathtaking sense of space and history, serving as a lively social hub for both hotel guests and Boston locals. This expansive lobby often hosts "Liberty Affairs," including live music and fashion shows, adding to its dynamic atmosphere.

The hotel is strategically located at the foot of historic Beacon Hill and adjacent to the Massachusetts General Hospital complex. This prime position offers guests the best of both worlds: the charming, gas-lit streets and boutique shops of Beacon Hill are just steps away, inviting leisurely exploration. Simultaneously, its proximity to Massachusetts General Hospital (just a 3-minute walk) makes it incredibly convenient for medical visitors and professionals.

Furthermore, The Liberty is directly across from the Charles River Esplanade, providing scenic views and opportunities for riverside strolls, jogging, or biking. It's also well-connected to public transportation, with the Charles/MGH T station (Red Line) nearby, offering easy access to major Boston attractions like Boston Common (a 15-minute walk), Faneuil Hall (20 minutes), and TD Garden (11 minutes). The architectural marvel of the building itself, a Gothic Revivalist structure of Quincy granite, forms a powerful and distinctive part of the cityscape, making the hotel a landmark in its own right.

Services: A Blend of Luxury and Thoughtful Details

As a Luxury Collection Hotel, The Liberty aims to provide a high standard of service, although individual experiences can vary, as reflected in customer reviews. The hotel offers a wide range of amenities designed to cater to both leisure and business travelers.

Key services and amenities include:

  • Accommodations: The 298 guest rooms and suites are designed with a contemporary flair, combining modern amenities with a nod to the building's history. Rooms often feature premium bedding, down comforters, minibars, and in-room safes. While some guests found the rooms comfortable, opinions on the "luxury" aspect varied, with one review noting issues like ill-fitting sheets. However, rooms are generally spacious, starting around 350-400 square feet, with large windows that offer views of the city, river, or courtyard. Bathrooms typically boast granite and marble accents, separate rain showers and soaking tubs, designer toiletries (such as Molton Brown products), and bathrobes. Hypo-allergenic bedding is also available on request.
  • Dining & Bars: The Liberty boasts a vibrant culinary scene with five distinct food and beverage venues:
    • Clink: The hotel's signature restaurant, Clink, serves fresh North Atlantic seafood, seasonal New England fare, and artisanal meats. It focuses on an ingredient-driven philosophy, supporting local farms and fisheries. Clink offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a popular weekend brunch featuring a Bloody Mary Bar. Its semi-private dining area features original brick walls and jail cell façades, providing a unique ambiance.
    • Scampo: Helmed by acclaimed Chef Lydia Shire, Scampo offers innovative Italian-inspired cuisine in a chic setting, blending Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences.
    • The Liberty Bar: Located in the dramatic lobby atrium, The Liberty Bar is a lively spot for cocktails and socializing. It hosts popular daily social events, including acoustic jazz on Wednesdays.
    • Alibi: This lounge, located downstairs, plays on the jail theme with celebrity mug shots adorning the walls, offering a unique and playful atmosphere for drinks and late-night snacking.
    • The Yard: A chic outdoor escape, The Yard is perfect for warm-weather private events and hosts CLINK.'s seasonal dining series (returning in April), offering exclusive culinary experiences under the open sky.
While one review cited slow food service, particularly for fries, they acknowledged the food quality was great, suggesting that the culinary offerings are generally well-regarded. An in-room dining menu is typically available, though one customer mentioned its absence.
  • Fitness & Wellness: The hotel provides a 24-hour fitness center, although one review found it "disappointing" and not up to luxury standards. However, the hotel also offers complimentary access to the nearby EQUINOX Sports Club (Downtown and Back Bay) for guests, which is a significant amenity for fitness enthusiasts. Seasonal outdoor yoga classes with Equinox instructors and complimentary bicycle rentals are also available.
  • Concierge & Guest Services: The hotel offers a dedicated concierge team that can assist with local recommendations, bookings, and even provides 30-minute historical tours of the former jail, often concluding with a complimentary glass of Champagne. A "Sparkling Wine Welcome Beverage" upon check-in is also a reported perk. Other services include a 24-hour front desk, valet parking, and package delivery services (with handling fees applied). A business center/computer access is also available.
  • Pet-Friendly Policy: The Liberty is notably pet-friendly, welcoming two pets (dogs and cats) of any size for an additional fee of $100 per stay. Guests with pets are often assigned to rooms on the sixth and twelfth floors, and pets may not be left unattended in the room. Four-legged guests receive treats, a bed, and bowls at check-in. They even host a "Yappier Hour" for dogs in the courtyard during warmer months, complete with cocktails and snacks, showcasing their commitment to furry guests. Dog walking and dog babysitting services are also available through Boston's Best Dog Walkers.
  • Connectivity: High-speed Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and is often included as part of the Destination Fee.
Features: A Symphony of History, Design, and Social Hubs

The unique features of The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel, are truly what set it apart in the "Hotels Near Of Me" category:

  • The Transformed Charles Street Jail: This is the hotel's defining feature. The architectural integrity of the 1851 Gothic Revivalist jail has been preserved, with original granite walls, cell doors, and the dramatic 90-foot atrium creating a visually stunning and historically resonant environment. The "jail theme" is playfully incorporated into the decor, from "Solitary" door hangers instead of "Do Not Disturb" signs to celebrity mug shots in Alibi, all without being overdone.
  • Vibrant Atrium & Social Scene: The central rotunda serves as a bustling social hub, far from its former purpose. It hosts regular "Liberty Affairs" including live music (like Acoustic Jazz on Whole Note Wednesdays), "Gallery Night Tuesdays" (art exhibitions), "Fashionably LATE Thursdays" (fashion shows with DJ sets), and "Beat Weekends" (various events). This makes the hotel a destination for locals as much as for guests, creating an energetic and unique atmosphere.
  • Award-Winning Dining & Bars: The presence of multiple distinct dining and bar experiences, including the sophisticated Clink, the acclaimed Scampo, and the lively Liberty Bar and Alibi, ensures guests have diverse culinary options and vibrant nightlife without leaving the premises. Unique experiences like cooking with the chef at Clink are also highlighted.
  • Courtyard Experiences: The former jail's exercise yard has been transformed into a beautifully landscaped courtyard, offering outdoor dining, seasonal events like "courtyard curling," and the popular "Yappier Hour" for pets.
  • Art and Design Focus: The hotel integrates art and design throughout, including weekly art displays from prominent local artists and galleries, reinforcing its connection to Boston's cultural scene. The interior design blends custom-designed elements with the historic architecture, creating a sophisticated yet playful atmosphere. The hotel's unique design and ambiance are regularly recognized, including being voted one of the most popular hotels in Boston by Condé Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Awards.
  • Exceptional Location: Being at the intersection of Beacon Hill, Charles River, and Massachusetts General Hospital, with easy access to public transport, offers unparalleled convenience for exploring Boston's historical sites, medical facilities, and recreational areas.
Promotional Information: Unlocking Exclusive Experiences

As a Luxury Collection Hotel and part of the Marriott Bonvoy program, The Liberty, Boston, often provides various promotions and packages. While specific offers can vary, guests seeking "Hotels Near Of Me" can look for:

  • Marriott Bonvoy Member Benefits: Guests who are Marriott Bonvoy members can enjoy exclusive member rates, earn points for stays, and redeem points for free nights. Elite members may also receive benefits like complimentary room upgrades, late check-out, and bonus points.
  • Seasonal Packages: The hotel frequently offers packages tied to seasons or local events. For example, a "Family Getaway" package might include amenities for children, as suggested by the glowing review that highlighted "customized and thoughtful arrival gifts" and experiences like "cooking with the chef at Clink" and "courtyard curling" for children. Look for packages around holidays, major Boston events, or specific times of the year.
  • Dining & Experience Packages: The hotel may offer packages that bundle accommodation with dining credits at Clink or Scampo, or unique experiences like the historical tour with champagne, or access to the fitness amenities of Equinox. Upcoming events such as the 2025 Annual Father's Day Artisan BBQ are also promoted, which can be part of special packages.
  • "Destination Fee" Inclusions: The hotel typically charges a "Destination Fee" (around $29.11 per accommodation, per night, subject to change), which often includes a bundle of amenities like high-speed Wi-Fi, Molton Brown bath products, access to Nightly Liberty Affairs, access to EQUINOX Sports Club, and seasonal bike rentals. Confirm what is currently included, as this fee bundles services that might otherwise be additional charges.
  • Pet-Friendly Offers: While there's a pet fee (around $100 per stay), the hotel's pet-friendly nature, including "Yappier Hour," acts as a promotional draw for pet owners. They offer treats, a bed, and bowls at check-in for four-legged guests.
  • Advance Purchase Rates: Booking your stay well in advance can sometimes lead to discounted rates, though these are often non-refundable.
  • Direct Booking Incentives: Booking directly through the hotel's official website may offer advantages such as best rate guarantees or access to exclusive promotions not available on third-party sites.

It's important to note that while the hotel generally aims for luxury, as one review suggested, experiences can be subjective. However, the high points of the hotel, particularly its unique history, stunning architecture, vibrant social scene, and family-friendly approach as experienced by one guest, often outweigh any minor inconsistencies. For the most accurate and up-to-date promotional information, it is always best to check the official Marriott website for The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Boston, or contact the hotel directly at (617) 224-4000.

We had the most incredible stay at the Liberty and are so grateful to the team there for making it extra magical. Kasey and Austin went above and beyond to make our boys (age 4 and 7) feel extra special. We’ll never forget the customized and thoughtful arrival gifts, beyond stunning accommodations, cooking with the chef at Clink and the courtyard curling experience. We were truly blown away by the level of hospitality and warmth. Thank you, Liberty for the best stay.

We stayed here late October and had a wonderful time. As soon as we walked in I was blown away by the architecture. The staff provided top of the line customer service. Anytime we needed something they were happy to accommodate. The rooms were clean and decorated historically. The hotel is also conveniently located. We were there for the Halloween party and it was so much fun! One of the best hotels I’ve stayed at!

We had our annual conference here and I can't say enough nice things about how well they treated us. The team thought of every last detail and were accommodating of last minute changes and doing random things like printing tent cards for us. Huge kudos to Devon Flack, who was with me every step of the way and the stellar banquets team featuring Tom and Brian. We were delighted with their anecdotes about the old jail, and thrilled with their attention to detail. I said plainly we value a seamless experience above all else and they truly delivered. The last day of the conference, we were all partying in the bar until 2:30 AM and even though the bar shut down maybe an hour before, no one came to shoo us out. And we were LOUD. My only quibbles are related to the structure of the building not being the best for a big conference. I can see why this place is famous as a wedding venue, and you'll have an amazing time if your group is under 150. I wouldn't recommend a larger group as setting up a bar in the ballroom while having dinner would be impossible.

Love the hotel but they basically called me a liar. It was 11pm and a group of people were being loud in hallway. At first I did not mind but it carried on from 11pm and all the way to 3am. Apparently there was a suite a few doors down and people were coming and going and they were being noisy in the hallway and waking us up for over 4 hours. Apparently, security did not care for my complaint and thought I was the one with the issue. I told them they need to go and sleep in the room like me and see if these people coming and going out of the room being a little bit loud would wake them up on a regular basis. I approached the front desk the next day to explain to them in detail what happened and again they could care less they thought I was in the wrong. They basically said that no one else complained, and that I was the only complainer so they did not believe me. What an absolute joke with my wife and I could not believe we were treated this way and that this hotel ignored the fact that people were being a little loud in the hallway coming and going for over four hours, and they didn’t give a crap whatsoever. I will never ever stay at this hotel again overpriced at $620 a night
