While we were only staying in Salem for one night, our experience staying at The Salem Inn made the visit all the more memorable. We stayed at the inn's Curwen House property, ideally located to explore Salem by foot, with several of the city's most famous buildings located along the same street. Our room was in a quiet corner position on the third floor, with a generous bathroom, comfortable bed, and a great view of the Ropes Mansion. From check-in to making enquiries, all of the desk staff were very welcoming and helpful. The breakfast that was included with our booking was a real surprise: delicious, and served up in the cozy converted basement level of the inn's property on Summer Street. After an evening exploring the city, it was a real treat to walk back and stay in one of the historic homes we'd been admiring. If we find ourselves looking for accommodation in Salem again, this would be the first place we'd check for availability.

The Environment: A Historic Gem on Essex Street

The Curwen House, built in 1854, is one of the three beautifully restored historic homes that comprise The Salem Inn. Its address at 331 Essex St places it in an "ideally located" position for exploring Salem entirely "by foot." This means guests are directly amidst "several of the city's most famous buildings located along the same street," offering immediate access to the vibrant historical and cultural tapestry of Salem. The environment around the Curwen House is quintessentially New England, with charming architecture and a palpable sense of history. Guests have the unique opportunity to "walk back and stay in one of the historic homes we'd been admiring," enhancing the overall experience.

Despite its central location on a popular street, some rooms, such as a "quiet corner position on the third floor," can offer a peaceful retreat. The review mentions a "great view of the Ropes Mansion," highlighting the picturesque surroundings. While the general goal is to "blend old with new," some guests have noted minor issues like poor signage to different locations within the inn's dispersed properties, which can be a minor inconvenience in navigating the historic layout. However, the overarching theme is the charm and historical authenticity that the Curwen House provides, making it a truly unique base for exploring Salem.

Exceptional Services and Attentive Hospitality

The service at The Salem Inn, which encompasses the Curwen House, consistently receives high praise from guests. The "desk staff were very welcoming and helpful," from check-in to answering inquiries. This friendly and accommodating approach to hospitality is a key aspect of the guest experience, ensuring visitors feel valued and supported throughout their stay.

Key services provided typically include:

  • Complimentary Breakfast: A significant highlight, described as a "real surprise: delicious, and served up in the cozy converted basement level of the inn's property on Summer Street." This allows guests to start their day with a delightful meal, though the necessity of booking breakfast times and the separate location (a short walk away) are minor points to consider.
  • 24/7 Support: While a physical front desk might not be staffed continuously at Curwen House itself, The Salem Inn as a whole provides support, often with clear instructions for after-hours check-in and assistance.
  • Luggage Storage: The inn is happy to hold guests' bags, allowing for unencumbered exploration of Salem before check-in or after check-out, a valuable convenience for travelers.
  • Pet-Friendly Policy: The Salem Inn welcomes pets in specific rooms by prior arrangement, making it an excellent choice for those traveling with furry companions (additional charges apply).
  • Sustainability Measures: The broader Salem Inn collection is noted for its sustainability efforts, such as offering filtered water for bottle refilling and refillable dispensers for toiletries, aligning with environmentally conscious travel.

The staff's willingness to go the extra mile to make a stay memorable, as evidenced by positive reviews, contributes significantly to the inn's appeal.

Features and Distinctive Offerings

The Curwen House, as part of The Salem Inn, offers a range of features that combine historic charm with modern comfort:

  • Unique Historic Rooms: The Curwen House offers individually decorated rooms and suites, each with its own character. Reviews mention comfortable beds and "generous bathrooms," indicating attention to guest comfort. Some rooms may feature specific views, like the Ropes Mansion.
  • Modern In-Room Amenities: Despite the historic setting, rooms are equipped with contemporary conveniences. These typically include private bathrooms, climate control (with heat pumps that make "quick work" of cold rooms), and complimentary Wi-Fi. While one review noted "wi-fi is horrible at best," this could be an isolated or temporary issue, and most properties strive for reliable internet access.
  • Kitchenette Access: Many rooms within The Salem Inn collection, and potentially some in the Curwen House, offer kitchenettes with microwaves and refrigerators, providing flexibility for guests to prepare light meals or store snacks.
  • Proximity to Attractions: The 331 Essex St address provides unparalleled walkability to Salem's most iconic sites:
    • Peabody Essex Museum: One of the oldest and fastest-growing museums in the country, just steps away.
    • Salem Witch Museum: A key historical attraction, easily accessible.
    • Ropes Mansion and Garden: Visible from some rooms, and a short walk.
    • The Witch House: The only remaining structure in Salem with direct ties to the 1692 witch trials.
    • Essex Street Pedestrian Mall: The inn is directly on this lively street, offering abundant shopping, dining, and street performances.
    • Salem Maritime National Historic Site: Including Derby Wharf and the Friendship of Salem, are within easy walking distance.
  • Family-Friendly Options: The inn offers various room configurations, including family suites that can accommodate more guests, making it suitable for families traveling together.

As a historic building, it's worth noting that the Curwen House (and The Salem Inn generally) does not have elevators, so guests should consider this if mobility is a concern and request a lower-floor room if needed.

Promotional Information and Booking Considerations

  • Direct Booking Incentives: Booking directly through The Salem Inn's website may offer the best rates, more flexible cancellation policies, or access to exclusive packages not available on third-party platforms.
  • Review Specific Room Details: Since each room is unique, reviewing the specific features and layout of your chosen room (e.g., through virtual tours if available on their site) is recommended to ensure it meets your expectations.
  • Cancellation Policy: Carefully review the cancellation and prepayment policies at the time of booking, as these can vary.
  • Communication is Key: For any specific needs or concerns, communicating directly with the inn staff prior to and during your stay can help ensure a smoother experience, especially regarding potential issues like Wi-Fi or heating, as mentioned in some reviews.

They are trying to blend old with new. They are close but not quite there yet. Breakfast booking was annoying, signage was poor to get to locations, room was freezing when we entered ( heat pump made quick work of that) and wi-fi is horrible at best, but we weren't there for wi-fi so it was a minor inconvenience.

Location is walking distance from the Salem strip. It was nice to be able to walk everywhere from our room. The rooms are cozy but if you have a fireplace, the may be a bit stinky. Other than that, it's a great stay

This was a really great place to stay in Salem. It was walking distance from downtown. The beds were very comfortable. I really enjoyed my stay. The only downside was all the stairs.

Very cool historic inn located in the heart of Salem. You’re within walking distance to everything. The inn keepers were great and the finches in the main house were adorable. My partner the avid ghost enthusiast brought her emf reader and voice recorder and did indeed capture something interesting. It was really neat to read some of the guest books, lots of stories amongst the pages, especially about room 17. Despite me being on edge from my partners ghostly dedication I slept like a baby, the bed was incredibly comfy, the room cozy and it was nice to have our own entrance and exit(not all rooms do check in advance). We will be back again the next time we come through New England, hopefully for a longer stay!
