lovedddd this place. Incredible spacious rooms. friendly staff. Great bar with tasty cocktails. My favourite part was the free postcard which I posted down the working mail shoot! So cool to see a working version. One downside was only one working elevator at the time, but it was serviced the next day and it didn't affect my overall experience.

The Environment: Historic Grandeur in the Witch City

The Hawthorne Hotel, built in 1925 and named after the renowned Salem native Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a proud member of Historic Hotels of America. Its Federalist-style architecture and redbrick facade contribute significantly to the historic charm of Washington Square West. The hotel's prime location is frequently highlighted by guests as a major advantage; it is literally steps away from the Salem Witch Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum, and offers easy walking access to the myriad of shops, restaurants, and attractions that define Salem, often referred to as the "Witch City."

The interior of the hotel maintains a vintage ambiance with period-style decor and details that evoke its rich history. The lobby is charming and welcoming, setting the tone for a stay that combines historical immersion with modern convenience. Despite being an older building, the hotel is well-maintained, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for guests. The views from many rooms overlook either historic Salem or the picturesque Salem Common, providing a tranquil backdrop to the bustling city life.

For guests traveling with children, the staff's kindness is particularly noted, making it a family-friendly destination. The hotel also provides luggage storage services, allowing guests to explore the city freely before check-in or after check-out, a much-appreciated convenience. While occasional maintenance issues like a single working elevator might occur, staff are quick to address them, minimizing impact on the guest experience.

Features and Distinctive Offerings

The Hawthorne Hotel boasts a variety of features that make it a compelling choice for travelers to Salem:

  • Spacious and Individually Decorated Rooms: The hotel offers 93 guest rooms and 10 suites, each individually decorated with period-style furniture. Guests frequently praise the "incredible spacious rooms." Room types vary, including Queen, King, and Deluxe Queen/Double rooms, with some featuring two queen beds and ample space for families. While some bathrooms may be "a little small" due to the historic nature of the building, they are well-appointed. Rooms include amenities such as flat-screen TVs with HBO, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, and often a coffee maker or Keurig machine.
  • On-site Dining Excellence: The Hawthorne Hotel features two acclaimed dining options:
    • Nathaniel's Restaurant: Offering a perfect start to the day with creative breakfast plates, including favorites like pancakes, waffles, and the famous house-made Hawthorne Corned Beef Hash (praised by a reviewer as "French toast is to die for," though the context might imply a general praise for breakfast and not specifically French Toast in Nathaniel's). Nathaniel's also serves dinner with a menu that focuses on contemporary American cuisine using locally sourced produce. It often features a live pianist session on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.
    • The Tavern: This comfortable pub-style atmosphere, complete with a wood-burning fireplace and oak-paneled walls, offers a relaxed setting for lunch and dinner. It features "trendy comfort food," local craft beers, and creative cocktails, making it a favorite among both guests and locals.
  • State-of-the-Art Fitness Center: The hotel has an on-site fitness center. Additionally, guests receive complimentary passes to the local Salem YMCA, which boasts an Olympic-size swimming pool and a full fitness center, providing excellent options for maintaining workout routines.
  • Historic Details and Ambiance: The hotel's vintage charm and historical details, such as the functioning mail chute, add to the unique character of the experience, allowing guests to truly immerse themselves in the past.
  • Meeting and Event Spaces: With 9,000 square feet of event space and 7 meeting rooms, including a ballroom, the Hawthorne Hotel is a popular venue for weddings, corporate meetings, and social gatherings. The hotel also offers catering services.
  • Unbeatable Location for Exploration: Its position on Washington Square West is a gateway to Salem's main attractions:
    • Salem Witch Museum and Salem Common: Just a block away.
    • Peabody Essex Museum: A short walk, showcasing world-class art and culture.
    • House of the Seven Gables: Approximately half a mile away.
    • Downtown Salem: Easy walking access to countless shops, restaurants, and other historic sites.
    • Public Transportation: Conveniently located within walking distance of the Salem MBTA commuter rail station.

Promotional Information and Booking Considerations

The Hawthorne Hotel, as a historic and popular destination, often provides various packages and promotions to enhance guest stays. These offers can be seasonal and it is always advisable to check their official website or contact the hotel directly for the most current information. Common types of promotions may include:

  • Seasonal Packages: Special offers tied to Salem's popular events, such as Halloween, Christmas, or spring/fall getaways. These packages might include dining credits, tickets to local attractions, or unique themed amenities.
  • Romance Packages: Designed for couples, often including amenities like champagne, chocolates, or special dining experiences.
  • "Stay More, Save More" Deals: Discounts for booking multiple nights, which can be beneficial for those planning an extended visit to explore all that Salem and the North Shore have to offer.
  • AAA and Travel Agent Discounts: The hotel may offer discounted rates for AAA members and travel agents, so it's worth inquiring if you qualify.
  • Advance Purchase Rates: Booking your stay well in advance might secure a lower rate, although these reservations are often non-refundable.
  • Direct Booking Benefits: Sometimes, booking directly through the hotel's website or phone can unlock exclusive benefits or ensure the best available rate.

Given its popularity, especially during peak seasons like October, booking well in advance is highly recommended. The Hawthorne Hotel is generally considered a higher-end option, but guests often find its unique charm, excellent service, and prime location to be well worth the investment for a truly memorable experience in Salem.

The oldest hotel in Salem, this place is expensive but also really neat. The bathrooms are a little small, but it has elevators and that's really nice, also ramps! The French toast is to die for, and they'll hold your bags even after you check out so you can experience more of the city. Great place if you can afford it.

An Unforgettable Experience at The Hawthorne Hotel We had the most wonderful experience hosting our rehearsal dinner, welcome reception, and farewell brunch at The Hawthorne Hotel, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with our choice! From start to finish, every aspect of the service, food, and ambiance was absolutely perfect. The hotel’s vintage charm was exactly what we envisioned for our wedding weekend, and it provided the perfect setting for all of our events. The food was a highlight of our weekend. At the rehearsal dinner, we had the Chicken Milanese entrée, which was a huge hit with our guests. So many people mentioned how much they loved it, and the entire meal was delicious and beautifully presented. The service throughout all of our events was impeccable, and the wait staff was friendly and attentive, making everyone feel welcome and cared for. One of the things we loved most about the Hawthorne Hotel was how perfectly it fit our aesthetic for the wedding weekend. The vintage character of the hotel gave everything a timeless, elegant feel, and it was the ideal backdrop for our celebrations, even though our wedding and reception were off-site. We absolutely adored the hotel’s library space, which hosted our farewell brunch. The cozy, intimate atmosphere made it the perfect spot for a relaxed and meaningful gathering with our closest family and friends. The space was beautifully decorated, and it truly set the tone for a lovely, laid-back morning after the big day. Our hotel suite was equally impressive. It was spacious, comfortable, and the perfect place to unwind after a busy weekend. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and we both enjoyed a restful night’s sleep. It was a great retreat for us during such a busy time and offered everything we needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. A huge thank you to our amazing events coordinator, Beth Pasquarello. Beth was an absolute gem throughout the entire process. She was incredibly responsive, helpful, honest, and caring. We never felt out of the loop, and she was always there to offer advice and solutions. One great example of her attention to detail was when she helped us secure a microphone for the rehearsal dinner, ensuring everything went smoothly. Her professionalism and personal touch made the entire experience so much easier and stress-free. If you’re looking for a beautiful, historic venue with fantastic service, delicious food, and a truly memorable atmosphere, we highly recommend The Hawthorne Hotel. Thank you again for making our weekend so special!

We stayed here for my wife’s wish to go to Salem on her Birthday. It was an amazing old hotel so much history in there. The rooms are a little tight, but considering the age of Hotel they did a great job on the rooms. The location was amazing walking distance to everything. The Staff was very friendly and helped any questions asked. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Stayed 3 nights here and had a lovely time. We had a really awesome view of the park, and the glowing windows of the Salem Witch museum. The hotel is so beautiful and has so many details that only a vintage hotel can have, without feeling creepy- to be clear I would have welcomed creepy but the Hawthorne Hotel is just nice and cozy! The staff was very friendly. The coffee in the lobby was great and such comforting start to our morning. I would happily stay here again.
