Perfectly sized and brilliantly located place to stay in Salem… and we slept next door to the room where George Washington previously stayed. Generous bed- and bathrooms, comfortable mattress, easy to use gas fireplace, and all restaurants and attractions just outside the door. Despite its boutique feel, we barely encountered other guests and the hotel staff were always a quick text message away. Yummy baked goods served daily as a reward for all of walking around town. Easy parking just a short walk away. Would definitely return.

Environment: A Seamless Blend of History and Modernity

The Merchant is not just a hotel; it's a piece of Salem's living history. Housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century Georgian-style building, originally commissioned in 1784 by wealthy sea merchant Joshua Ward, the hotel exudes an elegant and intimate ambiance. The architectural integrity of the building has been meticulously preserved, showcasing original features such as fluted paneling and the magnificent "floating" staircase, designed by the renowned architect Samuel McIntire. This historical backdrop is tastefully complemented by modern, chic decor, featuring bold colors, eclectic furnishings, and sophisticated touches. Guests will find themselves surrounded by a unique blend of colonial charm and contemporary design, creating a cozy yet luxurious atmosphere.

The hotel maintains a boutique feel, with only 11 meticulously designed rooms and suites, ensuring a private and exclusive experience. Despite its central location, The Merchant offers a tranquil retreat from the bustling streets of Salem. The common areas, including an impeccably designed guest lounge with comfortable seating and a fireplace, and an outdoor second-floor deck, provide inviting spaces for relaxation and socializing. The ambiance is notably quiet, allowing guests to truly unwind after a day of exploration.

Features: Historic Significance and Modern Comforts

The Merchant boasts a myriad of features that elevate the guest experience:

  • Historic Significance: A truly unique aspect is the opportunity to "sleep where George Washington slept." The George Washington King Deluxe room, where President Washington himself stayed in 1789, allows guests to connect directly with American history. The building's past as Joshua Ward's home, and its intriguing connection to George Corwin, the sheriff during the Salem Witch Trials, adds a layer of historical intrigue and even some reported ghostly tales, which contribute to Salem's unique atmosphere.
  • Luxurious Accommodations: Each of the 11 rooms and suites is individually furnished and decorated, showcasing a blend of stylish fabrics, modern furnishings, and eclectic accents. Rooms feature plush king or queen beds with comfortable mattresses and premium bedding, gas fireplaces for a cozy ambiance, and 40-inch LED Smart TVs with streaming services.
  • Modern Conveniences: Beyond the historic charm, guests enjoy contemporary amenities such as individually-controlled climate control (AC and heat), free high-speed wireless internet, and private baths with individually-controlled heated floors – a luxurious touch often praised by guests. Rooms also come equipped with waffle kimono robes, Lather bath amenities, Tivoli Bluetooth radios, irons, hairdryers, and wine glasses with corkscrews.
  • Prime Location: The Merchant's address at 148 Washington St places it squarely in the heart of Salem's central historic and entertainment district. This means that many of Salem's most popular attractions, including the Salem Witch Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, Witch House, Salem Witch Trials Memorial, and various shops and restaurants, are just a short walk away. The Salem MBTA Rail Station is also within easy walking distance, making it convenient for those arriving by train.
  • Parking Options: While a car isn't essential for exploring downtown Salem, The Merchant offers convenient parking solutions. There are five reservable on-site parking spaces available for a fee (with a slightly higher rate in October), and first-come, first-served off-site parking passes are also available at a lower rate.

We spent two nights at The Merchant while in town for a film festival, and it was a great stay. We arrived after check-in hours and had no issues—the key was right where the late check-in instructions said it would be. Staff was super responsive both over text before we got there and in person at the front desk. The hotel had a lot of thoughtful touches—snacks, water, cookies, breakfast, and ice all stocked and easy to grab in the lobby. The room itself was beautifully designed, and we especially loved the fireplace and heated bathroom floors! Public spaces were cozy, and the location couldn’t have been better—right in the center of everything and a short walk from the train. Would definitely stay again.

We had the most wonderful weekend stay at The Merchant. Everything from the room, the fresh baked goodies, to the location was perfection. We arrived a few hours before check-in, but were greeted with fresh baked scones to snack on while we explored Salem. We got a text as soon as our room was ready and there were fresh baked cookies when we got back from our afternoon adventures. The whole Inn is so cozy and wonderful. The fireplace in the room was amazing when we’d spent hours walking outside in Salem in the winter. A perfect stay all around.

From the moment I stepped into The Merchant, I knew this stay was going to be special. The hotel effortlessly blends historic charm with modern luxury. Every detail of the beautifully restored building felt thoughtfully curated — from the unique architectural elements to the cozy, contemporary decor. My room was immaculate and spacious, with plush bedding that made it hard to leave each morning. The gas fireplace added a warm touch, especially during the cool autumn nights in Salem. I loved the little luxuries, like the Nespresso machine and complimentary snacks, which made it feel like a home away from home. The location is unbeatable! It’s just a short walk to all the iconic sites—The Witch Museum, waterfront, and charming local shops—but tucked away enough to feel like a peaceful retreat. The staff were incredibly kind and attentive. Their friendliness added an extra layer of comfort to my stay. One of my favorite things was starting each morning with the complimentary breakfast—delicious pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt and coffee. It was the perfect way to kick off a day of exploring Salem. If you're looking for a unique, luxurious experience with a blend of history and comfort, The Merchant is the place to be. I can't wait to return!
